FSB: presidentially appointed 12 member board of educational and public policy leaders that determine the general policies and direction of the program; makes final approval for the grant candidates. US sponsor: Department of State. Funded by Congress, cost sharing with bi-national commissions, foreign governments, US institutions and other sources. Administrating agencies provide administrative support for all aspects of the program.

Institute of International Education • Independent non-profit founded in 1919 • Dedicated to international educational and professional exchange • One of the administering agencies for the Fulbright program since 1946 • Administers the Fulbright Fellowship Program on behalf of the U.S.

Before starting their main academic programs , many of our students attend pre-academic programs. These programs come in the form of: Gateway Orientations which tend to last 4 to 5 days and are offered to first year students a few weeks before their main academic program begins. IIE works directly with various host universities to deliver important information on culture shock, plagiarism, personal and computer safety as well a basic introduction to U.S. academic culture. Preacademic language programs short term-3-13 weeks or longer Various field-of study training (for LLM students for example) and any necessary English Language study.

Enrichment seminars: During the spring semester of each academic year, the Department of State sponsors seminars for first year Foreign Fulbrighters. Each seminar brings together 125-150 Fulbrighters in an open and interactive forum to discuss/learn about a given topic. They tend to last for 4 days at various popular locations in the US. Fulbright Alumni Association is an independent, non-profit membership organization who organizes events where U.S. Fulbright alumni meets and networks with current Foreign Fulbrighters.

Foreign Fulbright Grant • Agreements between U.S. and home countries

• 150 participating countries • Variations among country policies

• Different grants in same country • Approximately 4,600 Foreign Fulbright grantees supervised by IIE here in the U.S. at any given time

Country policies differ—most PhD candidates remain on Fulbright sponsorship for 5 years, but grantee from Chile limited to 4, and Argentina and Israel limited to 2 due to country specific policies. J-2 dependents—most countries support, but Afghanistan does not. Different grants in same country—some grantees are here as degree-seeking, others as non degree or are Visiting Student Researchers (pre-docs). Funding structure for grantees from same countries can be different—full or partial funding and funding schedule. Any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Usually 9 months in length (anywhere from 3-12 months). BARSA, Miguel Vinciguerra, CONICYT, CAPES. May cover tuition and fees, including university health insurance. ASPE—all Fulbrighters, but seen as secondary coverage if grantees must enroll in university health plan. ASPE limited to a per incident or accident, university has a larger life-time cap.

Grantee who receive funding disbursed through IIE get first two months of funding in paper check then EFT come into play. First checks sent to ISA –thank you. Fulbright Commission often provides travel to the U.S. and IIE will work with grantee for return travel home. Other countries provide round-trip travel.

Health benefits program, complies with federal regulations, some students enroll in university health insurance, refer to Terms of Appointment to see if IIE pays for it. African students-need to be enrolled in university health insurance and IIE will pay for it.
