Dear NGC Environmental Educator,
Over the past several
years, you have been ac-
tively promoting environ-
mental educational activi-
ties with students of your
school under the NGC pro-
gramme. Here is an oppor-
tunity for you to measure
how these activities are
contributing to climate
change mitigation and ad-
aptation as well as promot-
ing sustainable lifestyles.
For this, we introduce you
to “Paryavaran Mitra” pro-
gramme. In addition, there
is also a scope to upload
your activities on a special
and exclusive “Friends of
the Environment”
www.paryavaranmitra.in
website thereby showcas-
ing and sharing your experi-
ence with a network of
200,000 schools across
India ! We encourage you
to join the Paryavaran Mi-
tra programme initiated by
the Centre for Environment
Education (CEE) in partner-
ship with the Kerala State
Council for Science, Tech-
nology and Environment
(KSCTE) !
Paryavaran Mitra pro-
gramme aims at creating
“Paryavaran Mitras” – i.e.
Friends of the Environment
who have a commitment
towards environmental well-
being and takes action for
it. This programme covers
around 200,000 schools in
India. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam is the Paryavaran
Ambassador in India.

Parayavaran Mitra programme uses the concept of “Hand Print” - which is a tool that meas-ures impacts of positive environmental actions. As educators, you can use this tool to understand and visu-alize the impact of your en-vironmental education con-tribution, especially for cli-
mate change mitigation/adaptation and creating sustainable lifestyles. E.g. Plant trees. Each tree re-duces annual CO2 emis-sions by 20 Kg.; 100 stu-dents using one sided pa-per can reduce CO2 emis-sions by 870 Kg. Similarly, several actions can be quantified in terms of car-
bon emission reduction and eco-friendly lifestyle.
Send us by post or email your school activity reports for sharing on website. We will help you quantify your handprints.

Why Themes ? The thematic approach helps to link
the topics taught in the different subjects by the
teacher to our day-to-day life and environment. Stu-
dents become more aware about interlikages and
allows teachers of all subjects to become facilita-
tors of Paryavaran Mitra. Schools have to involve
students in the class rooms, in eco-clubs and the
whole school in action oriented activities under five
themes: Biodiversity, Energy, Waste Management,
Water, Culture and Heritage.
