Page 7:If we turn from our sin and follow Jesus with our lives in faith, He will save us. We are no longer an enemy of God. Instead, we can be His friend again.

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,

much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

GOD IS PROVIDER: Shelter (10 min.)

Colorful Favelas

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve been discussing ways that God provides for us, such as salvation, food, and clothes. Another essential need is shelter - a refuge and place of protection for our families.

Shelter in Latin America is as varied as the people, but one very popular type of housing in Latin America is a brightly colored house situated in a brightly colored favela (pronounced fah-veh-lah) or neighborhood. They are cheerful and and inspiring! Feast on this visual banquet:

ART: (30 min.)

This project can be created using watercolors, colored pencils, or watercolor pencils.

If using watercolor, watercolor paints in tubes are an affordable option and create bolder, more vibrant looks than traditional children’s watercolors. If using colored pencils, encourage students to color pictures thoroughly and apply a lot of color for a greater impact. If using watercolor pencils, students will first color the picture with the pencils, then paint over the color with a paintbrush and water.

Instructions for Watercolor Paints:

Materials• Watercolors, watercolor pencils or colored pencils (see above)• Water-absorbent paper, cut down to 8.5 x 11 if needed• R-26a, Colorful Houses template printed on watercolor paper; 1 per student• Paint brushes; one per student • Paper plates• Small plastic cups of water• Paper towels• Smock or old shirts (optional)

Lesson 26-3

Note to Teachers: Prior to class, print Colorful House template R-26a, onto paper that can absorb water, such as watercolor paper, multi-media paper, or tagboard. Links for purchasing options can be found on the “What You Will Need” page of this lesson. Templates are scaled for an 8.5”x11” page, so adjustments in paper size or printer settings may be needed (ie. Using a paper cutter, we cut the 9”x12” multi-media paper down to 8/5”x11” paper size before printing.

Page 4: Passport to LA Lesson 26 - Amazon S3 · Instructions for Watercolor Paints: Materials • Watercolors, watercolor pencils or colored pencils (see above) • Water-absorbent paper,

1. Instruct students to put on smocks/old shirts to protect their clothing.

2. Students should dip their paintbrushes into the water and mix the water with the paint. Begin with a small amount of water and gradually add more until the desired paint consistency is reached. The more water added, the thinner and lighter the color will be. If less water is used, the paint color will be thicker and darker. It is better to start out lighter and add more paint if desired. If they start too dark, adding more water to lighten the colors may cause the paper to become oversaturated.

3. Instruct students to paint with lighter colors (white, yellow, pink, etc.) first and then move to darker colors

4. When changing colors, students should clean their brushes with water and blot them dry on a paper towel.

5. When projects are completed, students should rinse brushes in water to clean.

Instructions for Watercolor Pencils:

1. Using watercolor pencils, instruct students to completely color in picture with desired colors and boldness.

2. Dip paintbrush in water, dab off excess water, then paint one color at a time with the water. This will cause the colors to bleed and blend together.

3. Continue until the entire picture has been painted with water.
