Meet Our New Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Bishop Jaime Soto has appointed me to serve you as pastor of Our Lady of Assumption starting August 1. It is my joy to re-

turn to serve at OLA after 23 years of service in other parishes of the Diocese.

As some old time parishioners might recall, I was born in the Azores and immigrated with my family at the age of 16 in 1971

settling in Rhode Island, the most Catholic state of the union, where my brothers and sisters live, where my deceased parents

lived, and where I lived for about 10 years. At the age of 24 in 1978 I entered the Seminary in the Azores. While there I

heard that a Portuguese priest was looking for a Seminarian to come to Sacramento to succeed him in serving the Portuguese

Community.

In 1981, I came to California where I attended St. Patrick's college and then spent 4 years at St. Patrick's in Menlo Park. I

served one year as transitional deacon at Presentation Parish. After my ordination to the priesthood in 1987 I received my

first assignment as Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Assumption serving Msgr. O’Connor and Fr. Leo McAllister. In 1991, I

was assigned as Pastor of St. Elizabeth where I served for 14 years. I was then assigned to St. Joseph in Redding and later to

St. Thomas in Oroville. For the past five years I have served as pastor of St. Philomene.

I truly have enjoyed all my assignments and working with different people. Through it all I have served also the Portuguese

Community throughout Northern California as time allows. Now I look forward to serving you at OLA. I know that OLA is

a great parish which has been blessed with good priests who have done a good job. I know that it has a great staff and many

dedicated parishioners who let Jesus do great things through them to manifest the Kingdom of God and His love. I am confi-

dent of God's love for me, even though I do not deserve it, and I am very convinced that God works in all of you. Thus, I

come to OLA with deep respect for all that God has been doing there and with a desire to join you in listening to Jesus Christ

and carrying out His will for OLA.

We know that God and His Kingdom is all about love, that He so loves us that He gives us Jesus as

Our Savior Who gives us His Holy Spirit to be our Friend, Consoler and Teacher. Together, let us lis-

ten to Him and follow His loving guidance and inspiration. Please keep me in your prayers. I will pray

for you too and try to be patient with me as God is. In time I hope to know you all, but I am older now.

Before it was easier for me to remember all names. It takes more time now to memorize all names and

even at times I might blank. God Bless us all.

Sincerely,

Eduino Silveira

Pastor (effective August 1, 2014)

SERVANT LEADER

A Note From Our Administrator

I came to Our Lady of the Assumption Parish on June 3, 2014. I have enjoyed my stay with you and have been nourished spirit-

ually by being among you.

As you know, I am Chaplain of Cristo Rey High School here in Sacramento. School reconvenes on August 4, 2014. Our com-

mencement was on June 7, 2014, so I was already serving here before school let out. Thus, I have a narrow window for my per-

sonal retreat and vacation. This is all to explain why I will leave my position as Administrator before your new Pastor (Fr.

Eduino Silveira) arrives. My last day will be Tuesday, July 9, 2014.

Fr. Maurice O’Brien will assume the position of Parish Administrator on July 10, 2014, and will remain with you until your

new Pastor takes office. Fr. Maurice has served as Pastor of several parishes in the Diocese of Sacramento and retired from

Saint Monica Parish in Willows, CA, where he is Pastor Emeritus. Please extend the same warm welcome to Fr. Maurice as you

extended to me.

Lastly, for my part, I thank you for the warm reception and constant support you extended to me in my short time with you.

May God bless Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and Fr. Eduino Silveira.

In the Lord,

Fr. Gerry Robinson SJ

Parish Administrator

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Offertory Collection Results for June 28th & 29th, 2014: $10,643.30

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” - Matthew 11:30

When we think of being good stewards, we may think that God is asking too much of us when He calls us to gener-

ously share our time, talent and treasure. However, we must remember that we are not “owners” of anything, we are

merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. All He is asking is that we give back a small portion of what He has

already given to us.

STEWARDSHIP AT OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION

Peter’s Pence Collection

Thank you for your generous support of our Holy Fa-

ther’s work in the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our Lady of

the Assumption’s contribution of $2,657.11 (not counting

what comes in through ParishPay throughout the month)

will be combined with those from our brothers and sisters

around the world to help the Holy Father provide essen-

tial relief to people in need. Your generosity is an act of

solidarity with the universal Church, answering the call to

become a witness of charity. May God bless you.

Wedding Announcement

We are pleased to announce that Amir

Javideyan and Angela Gregory were unit-

ed in marriage on Saturday, June 28th.

Please join us in congratulating them as

they begin their wedded life together.

REMEMBRANCES & SPECIAL EVENTS

Parish Pay Summer is here! Tis’ the season for outdoor barbecues, beaches, and well-deserved family vacations. While families

spend hours planning for those three-day weekends and weeks out of town, they sometimes tend to overlook that

their parish needs them especially in the summer months. Stewardship shouldn’t go away when you do. OLA ex-

penses are a 12 month proposition. Parish Pay is a safe, convenient way to electronically donate consistently, giving

you the peace of mind that you are doing your part to support the parish and its ministries. You may use your check-

ing account, debit or credit card to establish a recurring or one-time donation. To sign up, simply go to olaparish.net

and click on “donation”.

Family Promise Cell Phone Donations

Do you have any old cell phones in your junk drawer? Would you like to get

rid of them? If you do, you may drop them off at the Parish Office during regu-

lar business hours. The collection is on-going and the money raised by Family

Promise benefits homeless families with children by getting them into homes

of their own. Please contact Maggie at 359-4787 with your questions.

Praying with Scripture this week

The disciples’ challenge to carry on Jesus’ mission is

seen this week in Matthew’s gospel: the disciples expe-

rience Jesus’ ability to cure the sick, drive out demons,

and even raise a dead child back to life. The first read-

ings from Hosea sketch the covenant relationship be-

tween God and Israel as if it were a marriage. God’s

wrath and anger at covenant infidelity gives way to the

mercy of a mother’s love for a child.

Let us pray this week…

Jesus, fill us with courage and hope.
