Young Children at Mass
Several parishioners asked that this July 13th article be re-run for those families returning to Our Lady of the Assumption School this
past week. We hope you enjoy it...and share it with those who may have missed it.
In the past few months, there has been a lot of talk amongst the staff about how to let families with young children know that they are
welcome here at Our Lady of the Assumption. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish in La Jolla placed a two-part message in their pews that gave
voice to many of the thoughts expressed during these conversations. One part was addressed to the parents of young children while the
other was addressed to the members of their parish. To the members of the parish, they wrote: “[t]he presence of children is a gift to the
Church and they are a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their par-
ents.” To the parents of young children, they offered the following suggestions:
Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!
Sit toward the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what’s going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of
other’s heads.
Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you.
If you have to leave mass with your children, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.”
Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one an-
other. Let them know that they are home in this house of worship.
Jamie Bruesehoff, who writes a blog entitled “I am Totally *That* Mom” wrote an article about this subject. Penned as a letter, it goes
even further to express the welcoming message that needs to be part of Our Lady of the Assumption’s “culture.” She wrote the following
in her blog (edited for space) entitled “Dear Parents With Young Children In Church”:
“You are doing something really, really important. I know it's not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to
church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring. I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car
seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to
try to quiet them. And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question
in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just
sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone's eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way.
I know you're wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? I know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you
are doing is so important.
When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present. When you are
here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn't about bible study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to wor-
ship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, I have hope that
these pews won't be empty in 10 years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know that they are learning
how and why we worship now, before it's too late. They are learning that worship is important.
I see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of
crumbs, I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone she's never met. I hear a little boy slurping (quite
loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup, determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. I watch a child excitedly color a
cross and point to the one in the front of the sanctuary. I hear the echos of "Amens" just a few seconds after the rest of the community
says it together. I watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672. Even on
weeks when I can't see my own children learning because, well, it's one of those mornings, I can see your children learning.
I know how hard it is to do what you're doing, but I want you to know it matters. It matters to me. It matters to my children to not be
alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people...and even on those weeks
when you can't see the little moments, it matters to your children.
It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When
we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the church com-
munity. They don't need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still
looking to be shown that. It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even
their badly (or perfectly-timed, depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means they are present.
I know it's hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church. Please know that your family - with all of its
noise, struggle, commotion, and joy - are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship.”
We here at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish hope that you will see this message for what it is: a request for those who might otherwise
make a family with young children feel uncomfortable for bringing their children to church join us in welcoming the newest members of
our faith family. They are learning. They just may learn how to treat others and Mass by what you teach them.
NOTES FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
STEWARDSHIP AT OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Offertory Collection Results for August 16th & 17th: $10,905.08.
Assumption Feast Day: $1,734.00.
“Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” - Romans 11:35
St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it
all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude
for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity!
REMEMBRANCES & SPECIAL EVENTS
Book of Intentions
We invite those wishing to have our congregation pray for
a loved one, whether alive or deceased, to write their
name in our Book of Intentions. The Book is located near
the SouthEast entrance and is brought up to the altar with
the offertory gifts.
Catholic Communication Campaign The Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC) believes Jesus would
use every means available to communicate his message if he were here
today, so the Campaign makes use of media outlets to evangelize and
promote gospel values. Half of the $2,366.47 collected here at OLA will
be used by the diocese for local communications projects such as our
diocesan newspaper and televised Mass for homebound persons. To
learn more about CCC’s national communications projects, please visit
http://www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/catholic-
communication-campaign/index.cfm. Thank you to those who gave
generously in last weekend’s collection.

SVdP Fifth Sunday Collection
Our Lady of the Assumption’s St. Vincent de Paul Society 5th Sunday collection will take place next weekend -
August 30th and 31st. Your donations are used to assist those who need a little help with food, rent or utilities. Our
Food Locker serves an average of 170 people per day. (In July, we served a record 1700 people!) And our numbers
continue to grow. Requests from those who need help making the month’s rent or paying a utility bill continue to
increase as well. OLA’s commitment to community outreach through the efforts of our St. Vincent de Paul Society
relies on your generosity to provide this Christian service to our neighbors. Envelopes will be placed in the pew pri-
or to the collection. We are most grateful for your continued caring and support.

SCHOOL NEWS
CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION
Praying with Scripture this week
In this week’s first readings, Paul reminds the Thessalo-
nians of their call to holiness, the faith and love that
builds their community life and the value of honest
work. In the gospels, Matthew shares Jesus’ “woes” or
warnings about behaviors that will bring God’s wrath.
Two parables then illustrate the proper behavior for the
time between Jesus’ death and His return in glory.
Let us pray this week...
Lord, we thank you for your constant love in our
lives.
ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the important ministry of
teaching the Catholic faith to our parish children. There
are current openings for catechists in the Sunday morn-
ing Faith Formation program in third grade and in sixth
grade. Volunteers should be a practicing Catholic in
good standing who have a love for children and the de-
sire to grow in faith with young people, a sense of hu-
mor, flexibility and a willingness to be of service to the
church. Classroom aides and substitute catechists are
needed as well. If you think God is calling you to this
ministry, please contact Beth at 481-5115.
Catechumenate for Children
If you have a child in First Grade or above who needs to
be baptized, or a child in Third Grade or above who has
been baptized but has had no preparation for First Com-
munion or Confirmation, please contact Beth at 481-
5115, for information about the Sacraments of Initiation
for older children.

A new series of Inquiry sessions have begun for those
adults who are not yet Catholic but have been consider-
ing becoming Catholic. The sessions take place on Mon-
days from 6:30pm - 8:00pm in St. Anne’s Room (near
the Parish Office). These informal sessions provide an
opportunity to begin to explore questions about what
Catholics believe and how God may be calling you at
this time in your life. For more information, please call
Beth at 481-5115.
Welcome Back!
School started this past week and we

ful school! We pray all will keep safe-
ty in mind as they navigate our multi-
