Dear Ministers, "The Resurrection Was Not on Sunday," Mr. Richard Ames' first tele- cast, produced 28,154 calls--the third-highest weekend WATS response ever! Last year's program on the same subject brought in 17,008 calls, which was the second-highest weekend total at that time. If this trend continues, Mr. Anes' second program, which is about Easter, should bring in even more calls. Again, thank you ministers and wives for your prayers about the program. And please convey our appreciation to the brethren for their prayers as well. I know God is pleased when we are all unitedly focusing our minds on His Work in heartfelt prayer. Mr. David Hulme, whom I have designated as Director of Public Relations (along with his duties in Media Purchasing), reports that prog- ress is being made by various media agencies to put together networks that will make U.S. programming widely available in Europe. W e have already been negotiating with them to air' "The World Tomorrow." Please remember these doors in your prayers. The door to Europe is indeed a big one! Ask God t o lead us in walking through it. In going over Mr. Larry Salyer's comments to you in this issue of the "Pastor General's Report," I want t o emphasize a couple of points to you pastors. As God's ministers, you are instruments in His hands, being used by aim to serve His people. God has given you a certain authority, spiritually speaking, over His people. Yet He holds you responsible to bear that authority with complete humility, always in love, having sympa- thetic understanding for people, even when you r n c . correct them. Correction should always be done only after much prayer, being sure that any resentment or undue indignation over their faults or wrongdoings has been eliminated from your heart. In some rare instances you may need to put one out of fellowship as God commands i n Romans 16:17-18. But always remember God does everything for - our good, even when He punishes us. As His instruments we must deal with His heritage the same way. Be sure to read Mr. Salyer's comments carefully. On occasion you may need to be firm. By the way, I want t o announce here that Mr. Salyer is now to take on the full responsibility of Director of Church Administration, effective immediately. Be sure to include him daily in your prayers. I know the intense pressure of that responsi- IN THIS ISSUE 1 bility -ad the need for -God's suidance and direction. H e c e r t a i n l y can!

Don't deceive yourselves! God works through human instruments . He t e l l s u s H e can do h i s Work through s t o n e s i f He has t o . Yes, God can use you t o do H i s Work even i f you a r e neg lec t ing prayer , Bible Study, f a s t - ing, repentance and overcoming. =, H e w i l l no t & s~ f o r long!

God is p a t i e n t . H e is merciful. H e g i v e s u s t i m e t o see t h e e r r o r of our ways and repent . B u t H e won't wait i n d e f i n i t e l y .

I have sa id many times t h a t God's m i n i s t e r s m u s t set t h e pace. Leaders m u s t lead. L e t ' s look c l o s e l y a t ou r se lves , asking God f o r H i s S p i r i t t o gu ide u s i n recognizing t h e a r e a s i n which w e need t o change. In which a r e a s of personal conduct or a t t i t u d e do w e need t o repent? I n which areas have w e l e t down o r neglec ted backing up God's government? I n which ways have w e watered down or f a i l ed t o enforce God's Word proper ly , whether i n d o c t r i n a l a r e a s o r i n p o l i c y a r e a s ? L e t ' s look a t our marriages, our ch i ld - r ea r ing practices, our dea l ings w i t h o t h e r s and every o the r a spec t of our l i v e s . A r e we t r u l y s t r i v i n g t o follow C h r i s t ' s example i n a l l we do? Are w e growing i n t h e a r e a s of br inging every thought i n t o t h e c a p t i v i t y of C h r i s t ? Are w e t ak ing s e r i o u s l y H i s admoni- t i o n t o come ou t of t h i s world?

Our great High Pr ies t , t h e l i v i n g Jesus C h r i s t , t h e Author and Fin isher of our f a i t h , t h e Captain of our s a l v a t i o n , is r i g h t now a t t h e r i g h t hand of t h e F a t h e r . H e is t h e voice of experience. H e has exper i - enced human l i f e f i r s t h a n d . H e is there a s our i n t e r c e s s o r , speaking u p on our behalf . H e is our Savior--the One who saves us. Sometimes our l imi ted , f l e s h l y , human minds can f o r g e t t h a t w e need saving. B u t a s i d e from t h e fact t h a t t h i s human e x i s t e n c e i tself is only temporary,-we need saving from death--the end product of our n a t u r a l conduct and way of l i f e . This g r e a t God, Jesus C h r i s t , suffered t h a t pena l ty f o r u s . And t h a t payment i n our stead a p p l i e s t o u s i f we are w i l l i n g t o repent of our own n a t u r a l way of doing t h i n g s and looking a t th ings .

God has extended t o u s i n d e s c r i b a b l e mercy. W e d o n ' t deserve it. W e d i d n ' t earn it. But H e g ives it t o us anyway. Jesus C h r i s t c a l l s us H i s brethren. God t h e Fa ther cal ls u s H i s begot ten ch i ldren . How much do w e app rec i a t e it?

ADMINISTERING GOD'S GOVERNMENT; FESTIVAL TRANSFER APPLICATIONS

Sure ly i n God's m i n i s t r y one of t h e most c r i t i c a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s w e have is t h a t of admin i s t e r ing God's government.

God is a l o v i n g , p a t i e n t and compassionate God who is eage r t o s h a r e H i s l i f e wi th u s through a l l e t e r n i t y . And though H e has a l l D o w e r H e does not u s e it c a p r i c i o u s l y or c a r e l e s s l y , even when provoked. That is what He means when H e s ays , "I change no t ; t h e r e f o r e ye sons of Jacob a r e n o t consumed" (Malachi 3:6). And aga in , "I have no p l e a s u r e i n t h e dea th of t h e wicked" (Ezekiel 33:ll).

Because He is p e r f e c t i n c h a r a c t e r , C h r i s t is q u a l i f i e d t o ru le t h e universe , and H e w i l l be a s s i s t e d by t h e s a i n t s , redeemed from among men. C h r i s t ru les i n H i s CHURCH today , th rough H i s laws, H i s S p i r i t and H i s m in i s t ry . H e uses t h e government of H i s Church t o c a r r y o u t t h e p rocess of b u i l d i n g c h a r a c t e r i n C h r i s t i a n s wh i l e p r o t e c t i n g them from t h e elements of t h i s world. Remember Jesus' words i n p raye r t o H i s Fa the r : "I pray not t h a t thou s h o u l d e s t take them o u t o f . t h e world, but t h a t thou shou ldes t keep them from t h e e v i l " (John 17:15) . .

Much of t h e job of t h e m i n i s t r y i n preaching and i n pe r sona l counsel is t o h e l p our b r e t h r e n d i s t i n g u i s h between t h e r i g h t e o u s n e s s of Cad and t h e - e v i l of t h i s world by expounding t o them God's law and showing them how t o apply s p i r i t u a l p r i n c i p l e s t o d a i l y l i v i n g ! Added t o t h i s , of course, is t h e need t o encouraqe, i n s p i r e and e x h o r t people t o a c t i v e l y f u l f i l l God's w i l l and "grow i n g race , and i n t h e knowledge of ou r Lord and Sav iour , Jesus C h r i s t " (I1 Peter 3:18).

To put it b l u n t l y , it is a job none of u s can, humanly, do. Only wi th t h e " love of God...shed abroad i n our h e a r t s by t h e Holy S p i r i t " (Romans 5 : 5 ) can w e begin t o have t h e pe r sona l c h a r a c t e r and a t t i t u d e of s a c r i f i c e r equ i r ed t o make f u l l proof of our m i n i s t r y .

I know t h a t you m i n i s t e r s work long and hard t o s e r v e God's people and t o wade through t h e myriad problems t h a t a r i s e i n your l o c a l congrega t ions . Remember t h a t sometimes, e s p e c i a l l y i f a m i n i s t e r d o e s n ' t s t a y c l o s e t o God or h i s fami ly , t h e burden of t h e s e r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s could begin t o a f f e c t h i s approach t o people. H e can become i r r i t a b l e and de fens ive , which can l e a d t o impat ience and ha r sh responses t o p e o p l e ' s pe r sona l needs. H e may even begin t o imagine t h a t c e r t a i n of h i s f l o c k have become

h i s adversar ies . THIS IS NOT FAR FETCHED SPECULATION. It can and does happen t o m i n i s t e r s i n t h i s world and it can happen t o you!

L e t ' s no t f o r g e t God's promises. H e s ays through Peter, "Casting a l l your care on him; f o r he cares f o r you." And Jesus sa id , "Come unto m e , a l l ye t h a t l abor and a r e heavy laden, and I w i l l g ive you rest." We are l a b o r e r s together w i t h God, a s P a u l says , and w e m u s t l e t H i m c a r r y t h e b u l k of t h e load !

Surely there is a t i m e t o be firm i n c o r r e c t i o n and reproof . Chr i s t h a s given u s t h e a u t h o r i t y t o rebuke s i n n e r s and p r o t e c t H i s f l o c k when necessary. When you know t h a t is needed, d o n ' t shr ink from it! B u t make sure you have a l l t h e facts and a r i g h t a t t i t u d e and approach. God's min i s t e r s should never develop a r e p u t a t i o n f o r being h a s t y i n t h e i r judgments and harsh i n t h e i r a c t i o n s . God does no t deal w i t h u s t h a t way, and we are t o be a r e f l e c t i o n of H i m .

A s w e approach t h e Passover season l e t ' s examine our own s p i r i t u a l con- d i t i o n by t h e f r u i t s of our l abor s . How do w e measure u p t o C h r i s t ' s i n s t r u c t i o n s for u s given through P a u l t o Timothy? "And t h e se rvan t of t h e Lord m u s t n o t s t r i v e : b u t be g e n t l e unto a l l men, a p t t o teach, p a t i e n t , in meekness i n s t r u c t i n g those t ha t oppose themselves: i f God peradventure w i l l g i v e them repentance t o t h e acknowledging of t h e t r u t h : and t h a t t h e y may recover themselves ou t of t h e sna re of t h e d e v i l , who a r e taken c a p t i v e by him a t h i s w i l l " (I1 Timothy 2:24-26).

MEDIA PURCHASING UPDATE

Sometime l a s t year I wrote i n t h i s column t h a t 1985 was shaping up a s a watershed year i n European broadcast ing. W e l l , t h e pace has not slackened. Along w i t h Frank Brown and David Gunn, Larry Omasta and I were ab le t o a t t e n d a two-day Cable & Sa te l l i t e TV Conference i n London i n e a r l y March, organized by THE FINANCIAL TIMES. Speakers represented some of t h e major p l aye r s i n t h e drama being enac ted i n Europe these days. B u t t h i s is a drama being played ou t behind t h e scenes , no t on t h e screens . In France, we a n t i c i p a t e a i r i n g t h e s u b t i t l e d program i n t h e very near future--the ownership of a new French channel has a l r eady requested "The World Tomorrow."

FLEET ADMINISTRATION

ECM; SAFETY TIP

ECn The electronic control module, or ECM, is the central computer that controls the engine's fuel, ignition and emissions systems. It has been a part of General Motors fuel systems since mid 1980. The purpose of the ECM is to keep engine emissions at federal standards and its function is to get maximum fuel economy from the engine. Various sensors keep the ECM informed of such things as oxygen content of engine exhaust, coolant temperature, engine vacuum (an indication of engine load) , barometer pressure (an indication of altitude), throttle position and vehicle speed. The information that the ECM receives from these sensors allows it to make decisions as to how much fuel should enter the engine, ignition timing position and the function of emissions parts. Because the ECM uses inputs to control various outputs in a never-ending cycle, it is referred to as a "closed loop" system. An ECM failure could result in the "service engine - soon" light coming on, poor driveability and increased engine emissions. The ECM is covered under the federally mandated GM five-year/50,000 mile warranty.

Safety Tip Instead of looking just a few feet ahead of you--as most drivers do--look as far down the road as you can. Let your peripheral vision control your direction. You'll find that you drive much more smoothly and have better anticipation of potential hazards. Also, drive defensively at all times, and drive according to surrounding weather conditions. Last, and most important, buckle up!

NICARAGUA CONTROVERSY BOILS ON; OLOF PALME: HOW MUCH OF A PEACEMAKER?; WATCH THOSE "MCNUGGETS"

Determined President Confronts mHalf-Courageousm Congress Last week President Reagan lost the first round in his effort to supply funds to what he calls the "freedom fighters" battling the Marxist government in Nicaragua. The Democratic-majority House of Representatives turned down his $100 million funding request; the Senate is likely to approve it. The measure then goes to a joint legislative committee for possible compro- mise. The House might, in addition, take up the whole issue again next month.

PASTOR GENERAL'S REPORT,. MARCH 28, 1986 PAGE 9

The Editor-in-Chief of U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT, Mortimer B. Zuckerman, gave this sobering assessment of the deepening crisis in Central America in the March 24 issue of his magazine:

On the very day in 1983 when our group arrived in Managua, the Sandinistas shut down the leading newspaper, LA PRENSA. Why? Because LA PRENSA carried a news story the Sandinistas wanted to cover up.... Prior to that visit, my sympathies had been with the Sandinistas, who had fought bravely to rid Nicaragua of the despicable Somoza. But it became clear that Nicaragua is a revolution gone awry....

The Sandinistas have made no secret of their policy of export- ing their brand of revolution--what they have called "revolu- - tion without boundaries."... Nothing is more likely to lead to direct U.S. military involvement in the region than the emer- gence of a militaristic, anti-American (the Sandinista anthem goes "Down with the Yankees, -the enemy of humanity"), aggres- sive, totalitarian regime in Nicaragua bouncing around Central America like a loose cannon. This is why the region is so critical to U.S. security.

We can't allow a second Cuba. So what can we do? We should both talk and carry a big stick--what is called a two-track policy.... We should test them by asking for a withdrawal from the Soviet sphere of influence and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.... The Sandinista record is one of broken promises. But this test is worth a try--if only to demonstrate to doubters in our country and elsewhere the alien nature of the Sandinista regime.... The Democrats should think hard and long about what is at stake. It is more than simply a sem- blance of freedom in Nicaragua. It is peace and stability throughout Central America--which after all lies in our own backyard.

Palme's death: Chickens come home to roost Police in Stockholm, Sweden, are still at a loss for clues leading to apprehension of the person or persons who assassinated Prime Minister Olof Palme on March 1. The motive for the crime is equally unclear. The murder stunned the Swedish populace, which was accustomed to having its chief executive pop up unan- nounced and unescorted in public. But no longer can Swedes claim "it can't happen here."

Even though Mr. Palme was widely respected in the world, especially in Third World countries for whose causes he ardently strove, he had his domestic detractors. Critics on the right claimed he was far too soft on Communism, especially toward the Soviets, whose submarines snoop in Swedish coastal waters almost with impunity. Officers in Sweden's military were becoming so disheartened over this ongoing problem that some of them had come out in favor of Sweden joining NATO, a course which would terminate Sweden's long-standing principle of neutrality.

Mr. Palme, reported the March 3 TIMES of London, also "appeared to take particular relish in criticising the United States." In 1968 he marched in an anti-American demonstration in Stockholm with North Vietnam's

And, according t o i n d u s t r y f i g u r e s , Burger King's Chicken Sandwich con ta ins 42 grams of fa t -equivalent t o a p i n t and a half of Sealtest ice cream.

Tallow is f a t trimmed from meat cuts and rendered i n t o shortening. It is not on ly f a t b u t t h e worst kind of f a t ; it is h ighly saturated, a chemical c l a s s i f i c a t i o n f o r f a t s t h a t , according t o Sacks, both i n c i t e t h e body t o produce c h o l e s t e r o l and decrease t h e body's a b i l i t y t o break down and e x c r e t e unused choles te ro l . . . . A t McDonald's, t h e n a t i o n ' s largest source of f a s t food, no secret is made of its f r y i n g technique. " W e u s e t h e h i g h e s t q u a l i t y of beef and vegetab le sho r t en ing , and t h e reason w e use t h a t shor ten ing i s because it produces t h e h i g h e s t q u a l i t y f i n i s h e d product and the b e s t - t a s t i n g 9," says spokesperson Terr i Capatosto.... 1984, 1.3 b i l l i o n pounds of beef t a l low were used i n America, most f o r f r y i n g , some i n margarines. Its cooking advantages are simply put : Tallow is r e l a t i v e l y inexpensive and doesn ' t break down a t h i g h temperatures, as unsa tura ted vegetab le o i l s do. Moreover, t h e f a t is f l a v o r f u l . . . . The National I n s t i t u t e s of Health ( N I H ) and o t h e r agencies , meanwhile, are recommending a 25-percent cu tback i n a l l d i e t a r y f a t . Johnson's and Kentucky Fried Chicken.... About 37 percent of the fat in McDonald's Chicken McNuggets and Burger King's chicken fillet sandwich and over 40 percent of that in the two chains' fish was saturated. "Quite simply," says Sacks, "the favorable fatty-acid content in chicken and fish is destroyed by the cooking process, which involves the addition of beef tallow.... n

A portion of frozen french fries, which are fried and then sprayed with more fat before freezing so they will "fry" in the consumer's oven, had about half the fat contained in fast-food fries. . . . Scientists disagree on precisely what different fats do to the body and exactly how the effects come about, but some studies show that polyunsaturated fats, such as safflower oil, both decrease the body's ability to manufacture cholesterol and, up to a point, increase the rate of breakdown and excretion of cholesterol from the body. Other studies suggest that mono- unsaturated olive oil also lowers blood cholesterol levels....

The companies dispensing beef-fried foods continue to find new outlets. According to a Washington, D.C., advocacy group, the Food Research and Action Center, a school cafeteria in Lexington, Massachusetts, gets some of its food from McDonald's. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the chain attempted to build an outlet right inside a school but was denied permission. In Miami its competitor is rolling out mobile restaurants, called Burger King Expresses, which will be sent around to college campuses.

So f a r , the big chains have remained above the fray over fat, emphasizing the positive instead of disclaiming the negative.

- In so doing, they stick to their most powerful weapon: advertising. In 1984 alone, McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's together spent $457 million on network and local television slots.... No advertisement, however, is likely to outdo the Wendy's commercial in which the chain's former star, Clara Peller, peeked into a giant-size, scantily filled bun and complained loudly, "Where's the beef?" As we know now, it's in the chicken, fish and french fries.

If our allegedly Judeo-Christian society would simply follow the instructions concerning consumption of fats given in Leviticus 3:17 and 7:23, we could avoid much of the cholesterol buildup problem.
