Third Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017
Prayer of Saint John Chrysostom Before Reading or Listening to the Word of God O Lord Jesus Christ, open Thou the eyes of my heart, that I may hear Thy word and understand and do Thy will, for I am a sojourner upon the earth. Hide not Thy commandments from me, but open mine eyes, that I may per-ceive the wonders of Thy law. Speak unto me the hidden and secret things of Thy wisdom. On Thee do I set my hope, O my God, that Thou shalt enlight-en my mind and understanding with the light of Thy knowledge, not only to cherish those things which are written, but to do them; that in reading the lives and sayings of the saints I may not sin, but that such may serve for my restoration, enlightenment and sanctification, for the salvation of my soul, and the inheritance of life everlasting. For Thou art the enlightenment of those who lie in darkness, and from Thee cometh every good deed and every gift. Amen.

Dear Friends, [Here is another installment to pass along to your buddy who doesn’t ever read any of these bulletins. Thanks!] With Christ’s death and resurrection everything has changed, a new age has dawned! (2 Cor 5:17) The long reign of sin is over. The old age has not disappeared, there is still sin and death in the world, but Jesus broke its back. You do not have to be a slave to sin, selfishness, the devil anymore, and that is available to you. This is what we encounter in the resurrection, this is what we encounter through baptism, through grace, through Christian living. In Jesus a new age has dawned, the broken world has been renewed. You may say to me, well the world is still broken out there, but we must say not for those who have heard the call. The Lord has called us out of darkness (through baptism) and brought us into the light. The world doesn’t have to stay broken; we can be made whole. Jesus Christ died to give us a new life. Now, however, we must expect a change within us when we live in the light of His grace. Grace is made available to us every single day. The early Christians, who were witnesses to Christ’s resurrection, tried to adhere to this kind of life. It is important for us to note that this was not merely a nominal thing to which they testified, but was a way of life, a daily program, an identity. We hear about it in the Acts of the Apostles: “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.” Let us begin with the first, “they devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles.” In our lives, as disciples of Christ, there are really two books that we must know (and love): the Bible and the Catechism. There is really nothing else for us to learn. One is a sacred inspired text (the Bible) and the other is a synthesis of the teaching of the Apostles and their successors throughout the centuries. The Catechism of the Catholic Church, for example, is not to be likened to a manual that you receive with a new piece of electronics or that lays in the dashboard of your car. It helps us to know what we Catholics believe. Why is this important? Think about one of the Gospel parables: the sower in the parable sows all good seed, but on four different kinds of ground. Only the last soil, i.e., the good soil, produces any fruit. It is especially the first fruitless soil that applies to so many baptized Catholics today and why we need to devote ourselves to the teaching of the apostles. In the words of Christ, as the sower sowed the seed, “some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up.” (Mk 13:4) When the disciples asked Jesus to explain what He meant by this, He explained: “The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.” (Matthew 13:10, 18-19). This is the simple tragedy of our day. Why do so many fall away? We are given the seed of faith at baptism, but it is just that, a seed. This is only the beginning. Each one of us must do everything in our power understand what we believe. Why? Because there is a real consequence that is pronounced by Jesus Himself: the devil will come along and steal the faith from our hearts. Then, in Sacred Scripture, we find an important complement to this adventure of understanding our faith and not falling victim to a great tragedy of our time. The Catechism says: “In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, “but as what it really is, the word of God.” (CCC 104) We must listen to His voice and His voice speaks to us today through Sacred Scripture. In a very practical way, I would simply say make a daily habit of reading the Bible. Start with the Gospels. Devote yourself to it daily, we must not let a day go by in which we have not tried to fill ourselves with the truth. We can base our lives on anything or anyone. What do you base your lives on? Not in a general way, but specifically, concretely, in your day-to-day living. What should the bible and the catechism of a disciple of Christ look like? What does yours look like? Are they tattered and torn from reading, highlighted and marked by reflections and note-taking, falling apart at the spine? Or are they crisp and clean, virtually unused, ready for resale on Amazon at a premium price? Think about how you spend your time and what fills your mind and your heart. “The apostles devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles.” (Acts 2:32) Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!

Looking for a New Year’s Resolution? Sign up for a weekly Holy Hour in Euchar istic Adoration of Our Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist. Perpetual Adoration takes place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year inside the
church.
Are You a Registered Parishioner?
If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
3 main reasons why registering is important:
1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.
2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether
you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process.
3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment,
scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.
Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding
preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.
Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office (408-988-4585) or email us ([email protected]) to request a registration form.

Why was Jesus rejected by the religious leaders of his day? Who was responsible for his death? Did he establish a Church to carry on his work? How did Jesus view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead and what does his resurrection mean? The story of Jesus raises these and other crucial questions.
Pope Emeritus Benedict brings to his study the vast learning of a brilliant scholar, the passionate searching of a great mind, and the deep compassion of a pastor's heart. In the end, he dares readers to grapple with the meaning of Jesus' life, teaching, death, and res-urrection. Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the En-trance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection challenges both believers and unbelievers to decide who Jesus of Nazareth is and what he means for them.
