Second Sunday of Lent Sunday, March 16, 2014

2nd Sunday of Lent "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When they heard this divine declaration, Peter, James, and John fell on the ground, trembling in fear. The gleaming vision of Jesus miraculously transfigured before them, and the appearance of the two prophets who had been dead for ages, didn't knock them over. Rather, the clear voice of God that followed this apparition struck fear into their hearts. The first part of the heavenly announcement certainly confirmed what they had just seen-the unveiled glory of Jesus' divinity. But these words included another element, a command from on high: "Listen to him." Perhaps part of the fear that shook these men was the solemn realization that Christ's divinity demands more than our respect. It demands our response.

Knowing that Jesus is God is only part one. We are also called to follow him, by heeding his teachings and imitating his example. Lent is a special time to examine just how well we are "listening" to Christ. It is a season to uncover the areas where we are deaf to his word, or at least where we are pretending not to hear it. To this end, we have the Lenten exercises of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. First and foremost, in prayer we literally pause to listen. We do our best to quiet ourselves and ask God to speak to us in the depths of our hearts. By fasting, we learn to silence the demands of those physical cravings that too often take first priority in our lives. And through the practice of giving alms, we train ourselves to hear the voice of "the least of these," in whom Christ himself is present. This Lent, may we respond wholeheartedly to God's command to listen to his Son.

Parish Lenten Mission Repent and Believe:

A Journey Through Lent From April 5th–9th we will be having our Parish Lenten Mission “Repent and Believe: A Journey Through Lent”. The Franciscan Brothers of the Primitive Order will be with us to share how we can encounter Christ through repentance and our faith this Lent. We will have daily mass presided over by a Franciscan priest at 8:30am during the mission. On Tuesday, April 8th we will have a Lenten Reflection evening beginning at 5:30pm with the mass. We invite you to join us in worship, prayer, and fellowship. Mass will be followed by a light dinner and reflection about repentance and our faith by the Franciscans. The Franciscan Friars will also be available to hear confessions here in the Church every day, all day during the mission. Wherever you are in your faith journey, please join us to help you discover—or re-discover—the Catholic faith. For more information please call the office at 882-4362 or visit our parish website www.stlouisnashua.org.

CRS Rice Bowl Our parish will be participating in CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program, as a way to encounter Jesus through others, especially through the most vulnerable in our world. Rice Bowls will be available starting on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. Please be sure to take one home and use the easy and fun resources to deepen your family’s Lenten experience. Your prayers, fasting, and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty.

Catholic Literature Conference Saturday, March 29 from 9:30am to 4pm. Come hear internationally acclaimed speakers discuss great works of Catholic literature and the authors that wrote them. Speakers are Fr. Michael Kerper, Dr. Thomas Howard, Dr. Mitchell Kalpakgian and Joseph Pearce. The conference will be held in the activity center at St John the Evangelist, 72 S. Main Street, Concord, NH. Tickets are $15 and include lunch. For more information, visit www.christthekingnh.org/catholic-literature-conference or call Angie at 224-2062.

Mid-Lent Reflection Have you ever reflected on the mid-points in your life – e.g. mid-life itself, the mid – point of a pregnancy, a project, a marriage, a career, a ministry, a relationship? Come explore what the mid-point in Lent can reveal to us or teach us about the value of mid-points in our lives, using scripture to shed light on our reflections. March 29 from 9:30am to 3pm. Presenter: Mary Schneiders, OP. Please, register as soon as possible. Cost: $40.00 (includes meal) Deposit: $10.00 (non-refundable). For more information contact Elaine Marquis, CSC at 603-435-7271 or visit our website: www.Berakah.org.

Lent Disciplines of Fasting and Abstinence Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, and Good Friday, April 18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
