CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, Larchmont, New York August 23rd

TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

QUOTE FROM THE PASTOR “From God and through him and for him are all things.” Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Pastor’s Corner

ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

In his classic work The Sabbath, Rabbi Abraham Josh-ua Heschel highlights the link between our life in this world and our state of preparedness for the next: “Unless one learns how to relish the taste of Sabbath while still in this world, unless one is initiated in the ap-preciation of eternal life, one will be unable to enjoy the taste of eternity in the world to come.” The banquet is served, the table is overladen. But how can we enjoy the feast on the other side if we’ve never tasted it on this side? From whom will I need to ask forgiveness before the meal is served? When Jesus tells Peter, “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven,” he does so from the Jewish memory and experience of a God who is unimagi-nably generous in laying the table, and who despairs at just how ungenerous we can be in sharing the bounty. To struggle for justice and reconciliation “on earth as it is in heaven” is to join our labors with a God who desires to ensure that nobody is left out of the feast. And like Peter and Mary Magdalene and all the disciples, we draw our strength from walking with Jesus, the Christ, in whom our bountiful God has revealed “all things.” Jesus, we ask today for the courage to love, one en-counter at a time, and so be granted a foretaste of heav-en. Give us the keys that you gave Peter, the confidence to discover our own agency, our divine dignity, in the healing of the world. Christopher Pramuk, Give Us This Day July 2020

FOOD FOR THE JOURNEY

Our parish is ‘officially’ embarking on a new path—-a ‘charism of food’ in this time of great crisis in our community. We have already col-lected and dispersed more than $12,000 that

was donated to the Coronavirus Relief Fund to food-related efforts in New Rochelle and Mamaroneck. Now we want to make a more coordinated effort to share our money, our food and our volunteer time to help feed oth-ers. Right now all of us may not be able to come to the Table physically so we will serve people where they are. An email has been sent announcing details of the pro-gram from the Pastor—-and on our website, which fea-tures a new ’landing page’ called Food for the Journey! Let us begin at the very beginning by preparing the way for this in our hearts with our prayers.

YOUR GARDEN VEGETABLES

If you have vegetables to share from your gardens they can be donated to Hope Community Services, 50 Washington Avenue, New Rochelle, New York, 914-636-4010, [email protected]. They are open for drop off Monday—Friday 9:00 am—6:00 pm. They are always grateful for any food donations, especially now. Fresh vegetables and fruits are always greatly appreciat-ed.

ST. AUGUSTINE LADIES AUXILIARY The Ladies Auxiliary invites all parishioners to their Opening Mass on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at 9:00 am in St. Augustine Church. The Mass intention is for the past and present members of the Ladies Auxil-

iary, which will be followed by some announcements in church. We will NOT have a breakfast-social this year in the rec-tory due to the CoVid-19 pandemic. Also, regretfully, because of the pandemic, it has been decided that the Annual Holly Party will be canceled for this December. We always start planning and soliciting for this wonderful event in September. Please support the local merchants who so generously donate to the Holly Party each year. The rules of distancing, mask-wearing and gatherings in small groups make it impossible to schedule the Holly Party since we normally have about 220 people attending. Therefore it was decided to cancel the 2020 Holly Party. We are not sending out our annual letter and sign-up sheet. We will also not be asking for your annual membership contribution. We again thank all the volunteers who worked so hard in previous years to make this wonderful Holly Party such a suc-cess and we thank all those you have volunteered throughout the year. We will donate some of the money currently in the account to organizations that are in desperate need to assist them in serving the less fortunate in our communities. We look forward to hopefully seeing you next year. Stay Healthy and Safe and God Bless.

LAUDATO SI’: ON CARE OF OUR COMMON HOME

Pope Francis’ letter to the world about our environment is celebrating its fifth anniversary, and its mes-sage is even more urgent than it was in 2015. In addition to the closer examination that many Catholic organizations (Global Catholic Climate Movement, Catholic Climate Cove-nant and more) and orders (Franciscans, Jesuits, Dominicans, etc.) took during Laudato Si’ Week at the end of May, Pope Francis has declared a Year of Laudato Si’ until May 24, 2021. Let’s join together in small groups now to read this simple but powerful encyclical. We will discuss it online, one chap-ter per week for six weeks. Please contact [email protected] or Wendy at 834-1843.

PARISH READ Would you like to join a group of parishioners

and read a book together this summer? We will be read-ing Racial Justice & the Catholic Church by Fr. Bryan Massingale of Fordham’s Theology Department. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to meet for online discussions.

SISTER MURIEL COONEY As I announce my retirement effective at the end of August, I want you to know that I am filled with gratitude for these ten years with you at St. Augustine Parish. I have been surrounded with an atmosphere of peace, prayer, kindness, generosity, humor and a strong ministry for Jus-

tice. Whenever I hear the words “like the dew fall” at Mass I know I will remember you. How fortunate I have been to minister with a loving, kind, talented Pastor like Msgr. Kelly and all of our extraordi-nary priests and our gifted Deacon and the best staff possible. St. Augustine and its parishioners have given me the op-portunity to spend my time ministering with the RCIA Team and those seeking to become Catholic and time after time to witness the power and beauty of the conversion experience. With Chaplain Rosemary and Team Members I have had the privilege of being invited to share pain, grief, courage and healing in our Bereavement Ministry, truly “Holy Ground.” To be able to facilitate Scripture Study and Lectio Divina with Mary Ann Mazza as the words “when two or more are gathered in my name I am with you” grew strong and deep within us week after week, was such an ongoing spiritual gift for me and for all of us. The Choir and Michael’s gifts especially the magnificent Emmaus Hymn is another lasting gift. I am amazed at all the Ladies Auxiliary has accomplished through the years and I have always enjoyed their programs. The Thursday Senior group is always friendly to visitors. So gifted with hospitality and welcome, another gift from our beautiful senior mem-bers. How could I not be a better person because of my time with you. You are truly all that a Parish Family can be and I will visit often and will never forget you. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you. Sister Muriel Cooney O.P.
