Pastor’s Thoughts...

In his letter to the Philippians Paul beautifully describes the wonder, gratitude and hope that overflow from partnership in the gospel of Jesus Christ. I echo Paul’s words as I give thanks for the privilege of serving at Palm Lutheran as interim pastor for the past 6 months. Thank you for your ever-gracious wel-come, the generous spirit, and the encouraging support you have shared during this time.

I have been blessed to serve among you and blessed to see your faith active in love. As I have discerned God’s call and claim on my life and ministry, I have been reminded over and over again about the challenges and surprising graces that come in trusting that the future belongs to God. I am confident that my future, and Palm’s future are held in God’s strong hands—so we can look to tomorrow with hope and faith.

In the short time I have been at Palm I have seen God’s Spirit quietly and graciously at work, enlivening faith and guiding this congregation. I pray that you will continue to invite the Holy Spirit to lead you into God’s future. I also pray that you will continue to discern and discover the ways God is calling

anew the gifts God has given you for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ. May God bless you on the way! I look forward to

In Christ’s peace,

Pastor Kate

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.”

(Philippians 1:3-6)

Babylon is coming to Palm’s multipurpose room! Find out what Daniel is doing there, his trials and triumphs. A market place will be there to create jewelry, make a hanging garden and pur-chase food.

Supper will be available at 5:30 PM, with VBS beginning at 6:00 PM. Closing celebration ends at 8:00 PM. We’ll experience Babylon beginning Tuesday, June 12, and continuing for five Tues-days: June 12, 19, 26 and July 3 & 10.

VBS planning is underway and excitement is building, but we are missing you. In order to provide an exciting and rewarding experience for our kids, we need you! Even if you can only give a night or two, there is a place for you. Please see Jeanette Yewdall or email her at [email protected]. Thank you. We want to see you and your kids and your neighborhood kids at Babylon.

With Sincere Appreciation

Security Committee Formed

Prompted by recent events in our country, four members of Palm attended a church security seminar at Friedens Lutheran Church in My-erstown. Based on the information gleaned from the seminar, a Security Committee was formed for the purpose of developing a security plan for Palm. As the plan is developed, both the Church Council and the Congregation will be informed.

Making End-of-Life Decisions by Sandy Werkheiser, RN, BSN, MSN

We plan everything: schedules, vacations, work projects, weddings, retirement. One thing we seem to avoid is planning our end-of-life issues. If we don’t at least think about it and share our thoughts with our loved ones, others take over making those

decisions at the time when we are most vulnerable and are longing for dignity at the end of our life.

✓ Begin by thinking about what fears you might have regarding the end of your life: Pain, loneliness, lingering state of unconsciousness, to name a few.

✓ Talk to your loved ones about your hopes and fears. Tell them what your wishes are regarding giving a designated possession away. Discuss what you wish regarding your health should you be seriously ill.

✓ Meet with your physician to discuss end-of-life treatment and medical decisions.

✓ Discuss with your lawyer or financial adviser whether your financial affairs are in order.

✓ Talk to your pastor regarding your spiritual concerns.

✓ Draw up your advanced directive/living will. Assign a healthcare power of attorney.

✓ Make sure you have an updated will that designates to whom or to where your personal assets are to be distributed after your death.

We all want to die with dignity.

For our annual dinner back in November, we had some videos made with Annubis Productions in order to highlight the great things happening at The Caring Cupboard. The videos were excellent so we thought we'd do a little stitching of several different videos to give folks a chance to see some of the fantastic things we have going on! Please feel free to share this video, to use it in Sunday School classes or church, and to use as a springboard for a food drive you may be planning (or in any other way you see fit!). As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Thank you for being a part of our mission!

“A Christian is never in a state of completion but always in the process of becoming.” - Martin Luther

Dear Friends, Becoming the person that God created us to be can

be a daunting task at times. Luther was no stranger to this struggle. Throughout his life, he was plagued by bouts of depression, insomnia, and crippling self-doubt. Nevertheless, he discovered grace in the midst of these challenges, changing our understanding of God’s love forever.

We are created to love God and one another, and in this, we become ministers of the Gospel. The process of becoming Christian leaders is not without challenges similar to Luther’s. Those of us who work, pray, and teach at United Lutheran Seminary are privileged to engage in this process alongside our students. The relationships we build with them makes us better min-isters, better people.

That you have chosen to support this seminary links you to the process of becoming that is the bedrock of theological education. Your faithful stewardship is a reflection of your own progression of becoming. A gift is your way of ministering to the Christian leaders who are also part of this timeless process.

Thank you for this gift—this part of yourself that is witness to your process of becoming. We are grateful to be on this journey with you. Rev. Dr. Angela Zimmann Rev. Dr. Martin Otto Zimmann United Lutheran Seminary
