Learning Never Stops By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent

Welcome back to what I’m certain will be another exciting year in the Sioux Falls School District! By now, I hope you and your student(s) have developed a routine that includes a healthy breakfast, a priority on school attendance, nightly reading and just the right amount of rest.

It’s been said that play is a child’s work. This summer, I’m pleased to say we intro-duced a good balance of both in a new pro-

gram called Summer Climb. The focus of the 8-week Sum-mer Climb experience is to increase reading and math scores among students who struggle. A small group of

children in Kindergarten through third grade in three schools – nearly 200 students - were given the opportunity to spend their summer learning. And, learning they did! Summer Climb students at Hawthorne, Hayward and Laura B. Anderson Elementary Schools built and launched rockets to sharpen their science and math skills. They wrote stories and attended play per-

formances in the park. They went on field trips and experi-enced nature, first-hand. Some of the District’s top teachers guided their learning and created an unforgettable summer in an effort to boost student achievement. We’ll be tracking Summer Climb students throughout the year to see if the extra classroom time had a positive impact. And, as soon as we

have results from our youngest learners, we’ll be sure to share the news.

Summer break rarely means quiet halls in the high schools. Between sports practices, marching band rehears-als, Driver’s Education and other community events, there is plenty to squeeze in to the months of June, July and Au-

gust. In addition to these extracurricular activities, I’m pleased to tell you about how our more veteran students focused on academics through the summer, as well.

High school students who were close to completing their coursework on the last day of school, but just needed a little extra time, found that opportunity at each of our high schools this year. Teachers stayed overtime to guide

students toward completing assignments and taking tests to keep them on pace for graduation. More than 450 moti-vated students spent part of their summer taking courses to get ahead on credits. It is admirable that so many stu-dents value their education over their vacation.

As you can see, the Sioux Falls School District is serious about this business of educating students. We’ve

adjusted what you might consider to be the traditional school year to meet the needs of today’s learners. We are excited to see how these efforts benefits students – and in turn, benefit our community - in the months and years to come.

PSAT/NMSQT The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recogni-tion and college scholarships. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a not-for-profit organi-zation that operates without government assistance. to the 2018 National Merit Program. The competition will span about 18 months from entry in October 2016 until the spring of 2018 when scholarships for college undergraduate study will be awarded. Who can take the test: Students who plan to spend the usual four years in

door).

Patriot Spirit Everyone deserves a huge pat on the back for the enthusiasm and sportsmanship that has been on

display at our games this year. It’s great to see you supporting the team, having fun and doing it in a way that reflects so well on you and the school. I’m look-ing forward to many more such events! There can be a fine line between having fun and making fun of. We’ve all been to contests where members of a

crowd have not been up to the standard that you have set. I would like to review some of the tenants of good sportsmanship. In our cheering we like to keep in mind that we cheer for our team and not against the other team and we don’t want to single out any play-

er. In fact, the rules prohibit the singling out of a player and calling them by name, number or anything else that would identify the individual. The South Da-kota High School Activities Association rules also con-tain a dress code that requires spectators to wear a shirt so please wear a t-shirt or tank top under a toga

on those occasions when those are worn. You’ve been great so far, let’s keep setting the standard for other schools to see!
