better! Welcome to Greek Week 2012, the week where all Greek brothers and sisters come together to compete, serve the community, and show the UT Tyler campus their Patriot Pride! We have some great things lined up for this year, so enjoy!

The mission of the office of Greek Life at the University of Texas at Tyler is to promote excellence in

scholarship, leadership, and service while challenging members to live according to the principles outlined by

their own organizations. The Office of Greek Life strives to enhance the collegiate experience of fraternity

men and women and their involvement in the Greek community through leadership opportunities,

educational programs, and other services aimed to develop the students through their journey of becoming

UT Tyler and Greek alumni.

General Rules

**GROUPS MUST PARTICIPATE IN EVERY EVENT TO BE CONSIDERED THE OVERALL

GREEK WEEK WINNER**

Good sportsmanship is expected at ALL times. No exceptions.

All rules must be followed according to this manual.

All chapters and chapter members must follow all UT Tyler policies and procedures in

conjunction with Greek Week activities.

POINTS

The Attendance Incentive

Certain events during Greek Week 2012 will be based solely on attendance. As we are a diverse Greek

community, there will be a unique system in place by which points are awarded.

Attendance Incentive:

At least 10 active members in attendance= 50 points 75% of active membership in attendance= 100 BONUS POINTS

Double attendance incentive:

At least 10 active members in attendance= 100 points

75% of active membership in attendance= 200 BONUS POINTS

Class Schedule Accommodations: The president or appointed representative of each fraternity/sorority is

expected to submit all excused absences for ALL Greek Week events by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 26.

The excused list shall be broken down by day and by event. If no excuses are turned in by the deadline,

every person listed as active on your roster will be counted and you will receive a -50 point deduction from

your total.

Car Window Painting Date: Monday, March 26 Time: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Location: Ornelas Parking Lot 18 Description of event: What is Greek Week without a decorated car? Bring your car and your friends to get your windows painted for the week and show your Greek Week spirit! Points: Points for the Window Painting Station will be based on amount of cars painted per group.

There will be a maximum of 12 cars that may be painted for a point value. Each car will be

worth 10 points. If a fraternity/sorority is able to obtain the maximum amount of 12 cars

painted, 20 bonus points will be awarded. Each fraternity/sorority is expected to paint its

respective letters, colors, etc. on cars of its own members.

Painting the maximum point amount of 12 cars will result in a 20 point bonus.

Points per car: 10 points each for up to 12 cars

Flag Football Date: Monday, March 26 Time: 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Location: Intramural Field Description of event: To start the week with a friendly game of all Greek flag football! There will be two 14-minute halves and two teams of 20 intermixed, co-ed Greeks. Points will be based off of the attendance incentive. An RSVP must be turned in by Monday, March 5, for the flag football game and tailgate (with names of participants). Points: Points will be based off of the attendance incentive.

Jeopardy Date: Tuesday, March 27 Time: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Location: UC Theater Description of event: A new way to test your common knowledge, history, science, pop culture, and UT Tyler knowledge! Show off your skills while

gaining points for your team! There will be 3

members from each fraternity/sorority to make up a team. There will be five categories and within each category, there will be a 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 point question. A category and point value question will be chosen. After the question is read, the team to hit their appropriate buzzer first, will be given the opportunity to answer the question. Each team will have 5-10 seconds to answer. If the first team answers the question incorrectly, the second team will be given the opportunity, etc. After all questions are answered, there will be a final jeopardy question and the team will be given 30 seconds to answer. Points: Points for Jeopardy will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places based off of the team totals.

Project Toga Date: Tuesday, March 27 Time: 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Location: Sports Cafe Description of event:

Each fraternity/sorority will be allowed a team of 1 model and 4 designers. Each team will

be given 3 yards of fabric, 1 rope, 12 safety pins, scissors, and fabric markers. There will be 5 non-transparent bags with “mystery items” in it and the teams will choose their own bags. There will be 15 minutes for each team to create their toga masterpiece and then the model will walk the runway. Groups will Each group’s name will be pulled out of a hat to determine runway order. Points: Points for Project Toga will be an overall winner who best displays creativity, presentation, incorporation of “mystery items,” and attitude when walking the runway.

Speaker

Date: Tuesday, March 27 Time: 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Location: UC Theater Description of event: Come to listen to our speaker, Stan Pearson, on Tuesday night! He is a great motivational speaker and supports the Greek system, so come listen to him talk about leadership,

diversity, and more.

Points: Points for the speaker will be based solely on the double attendance incentive. Be sure that everyone signs in on their respective sign-in sheet!

Faculty/Staff

Appreciation Breakfast Date: Wednesday, March 28 Time: 7:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Location: UCN Ballroom Description of event: Come out early on Wednesday morning to talk with some of your biggest fans: UT Tyler faculty and staff! This is a perfect time for you to share with them what Greek Life has meant to you and what you do in your organization.

Please RSVP for your chapter no later than 12 p.m. on Monday, March 5. Points: Points for the breakfast will be based solely on the attendance incentive. Be sure that everyone signs in on their respective sign-in sheet!

Your chapter can also earn 50 points if you set up an information table at the breakfast

representing your group and another 50 points by turning in a Greek Week banner. The

Ballroom will be open at 7:00 a.m. and tables must be set up by 7:30 a.m. Please let the Office of Greek Life know whether or not your chapter will need a table by March 5.

Greek Banner

Competition Date: Wednesday, March 28 Time: Arrive with banner at 7:15 a.m. Judging begins at 7:30 a.m. Location: Faculty/Staff Breakfast Description of event: The fans are crazy…about the Greek Week banners! Banners are a great way to showcase creativity and pride in Greek Life. Banners will be judged by our very own faculty and staff.

Banners must not exceed the 3’x5’ size limit (3’ tall and 5’ wide) o Any banners that exceed the size limit will be disqualified from the event

It must all revolve around the theme of Greek Week: Patriots with Letters do it Better

Your group’s banner must have your letters on it

Only one banner per organization will be turned in to be judged, and it should be made with participation from chapter members

Banners will be displayed in the UC

Once banners are turned in and displayed, the winners will be designated by a ribbon attached to the banner. Once the banners are turned in and displayed, the winners will be announced at the lip sync/awards ceremony on Friday.

Points: Teams will receive an initial point bonus for turning in their banner on time. Following submission, the banners will be judged and groups will be awarded points according to placement. Banners will be judged on artistry, creativity, and relativity to the Greek Week theme.

Submitting banner ON TIME will result in 50 points.

Greek Games Date: Wednesday, March 28 Time: 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Location: Ornelas Field Liability forms (hard copies) will be available for each participant and must be turned into the Office of Greek Life

by Monday, March 26, at NOON. This year, fraternities and sororities will have their own place brackets. In

order for this to happen, each event will be based on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places. These places will have respective totals that we will use internally to tally up the scores to determine who will be the overall Men’s Winner and Women’s Winner. These individual places and points will NOT be added to Greek Week totals, only the overall total of 300 points will qualify.

Points per place: 1st place: 25 points

3rd place: 15 points

4th place: 10 points

TUG O’ WAR Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members.

Teams will start pulling ONLY at the sound of the whistle from the referee.

Objects shall not be thrown at the other team for any reason.

Only members of your team can be on your side of the rope.

There shall be no taunting from the other team.

If you forfeit, let the referee know BEFORE letting go of the rope. Do NOT let the rope go as the other team is still pulling. We don’t want any injuries!

You may wear gloves to protect your hands.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Hula Hoop Relay Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members only

Each team member will hold hands and must not let go, if hands do not remain clasped to one another, the team must restart the relay.

The first person will be given a hula hoop that he/she must maneuver through to the next person.

The hula hoop must go down the line to the last person. The last person must still go through the hula hoop until it goes to their free hand.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be

totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Sack Race

Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members only.

4 people will start on the starting line, lined up behind one another. The other 4 people will start on the opposite end, lined up behind one another.

The first team member on the starting line will race to the opposite team member, passing the sack to the second person.

That team member will race to the beginning line, passing the sack to the third person.

This will continue until the 8th team member has taken their turn.

Both feet must be in the sack and both hands must be on the sack at ALL TIMES. You must hop across the field in the sack when racing to the other side. If your feet come out of the sack, you must return to your starting position.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Three-Legged Race Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members only.

2 pairs will start on the starting line, lined up behind one another. The other 2 pairs will start on the opposite side, lined up behind one another.

Each pair will tie one of their legs to their partner before the race starts with the provided bandanas.

The first pair on the beginning line will race to the opposite side. Once they cross the opposite sideline, the next pair will race back to the beginning line.

This will continue until all pairs (4) have crossed the finish line.

Team members will tie their own bandana (one per pair), and then a committee member will come around and check prior to starting the race

During the race, if the bandana comes untied, the racing pair must return to their starting positions before continuing the race.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Wheelbarrow Race Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members.

Two pairs will start on the starting line, lined up behind one another. The other 2

pairs will start on the opposite side, lined up behind one another.

The first person will be in a push-up position, the second person will hold the first

person’s ankles.

The first pair on the starting line will race to their team members on the opposite

side. Before the second pair may begin, the first pair must cross the line, then the

second pair will race to the starting line.

The second person cannot let go of the first person’s ankles for the duration of the

race.

This will continue until the last pair has taken their turn and crossed the finish line.

If the racing pair comes apart, they must return to their starting positions before

continuing the race.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Water balloon Toss Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members only.

4 people from the team will stand on opposite sides of the field at varying distances.

The water balloon will start with the pair with the smallest distance between them.

The pair will toss the balloon one complete round (each person tosses and catches) before walking it to the next pair with a bigger distance between them.

This next pair will repeat the toss pattern until the furthest pair completes their round.

If your water balloon breaks, your team must wait until all other teams finish. The team that completes the most tosses before their balloon breaks will win.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Golf ball race Description of event:

Each team will be formed of 8 members only.

4 people from each team will start on the beginning line, lined up behind one another. The other 4 people from each team will start on the opposite side, lined up behind one another. Each team member will have their own spoon.

Each person must race across the field with their ball on their spoon, while holding the spoon in their mouth. You may NOT hold the ball onto the spoon with your hand(s) while you race. Your hands must remain behind your back.

The first person on the starting line will race to their team members on the opposite side, passing on the ball to the second team member only after crossing the line. The second team member will race to the starting line, passing the ball.

This will continue until the last person has taken their turn and crossed the finish line.

If a team member drops the ball on their turn, they must go back to the starting side before continuing the race.

Points: Internal only points will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes. Points will be totaled for an overall winner of each Men and Women for 300 points.

Can Castle

Date: Thursday, March 29 Time: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Location: UCN Patio outside of the MET Description of event: On your mark, get set, BUILD! Groups will be collecting canned foods that will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank. At 1:30 p.m., each group will bring their cans to the UCN Patio (outside of the MET) and build a “castle” to display their cans!

Each group will be assigned an area to create their can structure

Cans MUST be brought in boxes (so the East Texas Food Bank can load them)

Cans will first be counted by a member of the Greek Week Steering Committee

Out of the brought cans, only 500 cans may be used for the structure. Each team may choose which cans are used, but no more than 500 cans.

When the whistle blows, each group will have 20 minutes to create their structure

Structures will be judged upon creativity, size, and organization

Cans must be self-sustaining/supported

No props are allowed, even if they are used for decoration

Points: There are two levels of competition for the Can Castle contest. The first level of points is based upon the number of cans collected. The second level of points depends on the actual

structure built. Judging will be the responsibility of the Greek Advisor and/or appointed judge.

Points for # cans: 1st place: 50 points

2nd place: 30 points

3rd place: 20 points

Greeks Give Back Date: Friday, March 30 Time: 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Location: Steps in front of UC (outside) Description of event: We will be doing community service projects around campus. Some groups may be inside, some may be outside, please wear appropriate clothing for both conditions. It is suggested

to wear long pants and anything that you wouldn’t mind getting very dirty. Please RSVP for your chapter with names of participants no later than 12 p.m. on Monday, March 5.

Points: Points for Greeks Give Back will be based on 10 points per person, with a maximum of 250 points.

Lip Sync Contest

Date: Friday, March 30 Time: 6:30 p.m. Location: UC Theater Description of event: The lip sync competition will help to end an awesome week with some great entertainment! Lip Sync is an opportunity for each Greek organization to perform to the song of their choice and show the audience that everybody can step up and dance! The choreographed performance does NOT have to reflect the Greek Week 2012 theme: ‘Patriots with Letters do it Better’. Points: Lip Sync team performance (only 1 judged group allowed) 1st Place 600 points 2nd Place 400 points 3rd Place 200 points Judging Criteria: Originality and creativity of music selection Enthusiasm and energy Lip readability Synchronization of movements with music Crowd appeal

Rules for Participation:

Each organization may submit one team of 5-15 members to perform to a song or compilation of songs of their choice

More than one group may participate, however, only one group per organization will be judged for points.

o The organization must note which group will be judged at the point where CD’s are turned in.

All participants must be available for dress rehearsal between 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 in the UC Theater.

All performing groups (judged/non-judged) must submit a CD with the chosen song(s), a roster of performing members, printed lyrics of song, costume ideas, theme, and prop ideas must be submitted to Brittany Childs no later than 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5.

o Songs are chosen based upon when they are turned in (i.e. if more than one group turns in the same song, the group that turned it in first gets to keep it pending approval from Greek Coordinator).

o Once the submitted items have been turned in and approved, no changes shall be made.

o Songs that are chosen must be the “clean” version. No exceptions.

There will be 40 point deduction for not turning in songs, a roster of performing

members, printed lyrics of song(s), costume ideas, theme, prop ideas, and receipts on time.

Each organization has a budget of $150 to use for costumes props, etc. if they choose. All props must be made/purchased/owned by fraternity/sorority. There will

be a 40 point deduction if University property is used.

o Copies of receipts used to purchase items for Greek SING must be submitted to Brittany Childs no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30.

o Any group that goes over the $150 limit will receive a penalty of -40 points. o Any group that does not submit receipts will receive a penalty of -40 points. o Materials already in the organization’s possession may be used.

All costumes must be worn appropriately and cover all necessary parts of body (no bikinis, overly tight-fitting garments, etc.)

o All necessary undergarments must be worn. o Organizations in violation of this rule will receive a penalty of -40 points.*

No balloons, large signs, or anything else that could potentially block those behind you will be allowed in the audience.

Inclusion of profanity, lewd conduct, obscene gestures or scenes, vulgar themes, inappropriate dancing, and unacceptable behavior will result in immediate disqualification from the event and a penalty of -40 points*. NO EXCEPTIONS.

No contact between performers and judges/spectators is allowed.

o This includes but is not limited to physical contact, distribution of props (candy, beads, etc.)

No glitter, confetti, or streamers are allowed.

If any items are thrown into the air, they must land on the stage (must not float into the audience). The stage/performing area must be cleaned up immediately following the conclusion to that performance, all debris cleaned from floor.

No one is allowed “backstage” before their allotted time slot.

Small props are allowed onstage (anything that can be carried by hand), but all items must be cleared off of the stage after the group performs.

Teams will be given 10 minutes to set up, perform, and remove all props from the stage.

o In this 10 minute time frame, the actual “act” shall last no longer than 5 minutes.

*This is at the discretion of the Greek Coordinator, faculty/staff representative, judges,

and/or Greek Week Steering Committee members.

Greek WEEK Awards

Date: Friday, March 30 Time: During Lip Sync Location: UC Theater Description: During Greek Week, the Greek Week Steering Committee will be watching to see which chapters exhibit characteristics of the Greek Week Awards. During Lip Sync, the winners of the Service Award, Sportsmanship Award, and Chapter Pride Award will be announced. The criteria are as follows: Service Award- attendance at Greeks Give Back and work-ethic during Sportsmanship Award- positive attitude and encouragement towards all during the week Chapter Pride Award- the chapter that has the most pride overall. The committee will be watching…
