FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS By: Sandy Keir, President

Hope you had a Happy Memorial Day!

Those of us who spent the holiday weekend in Sarasota, unfortunately, did not bask in sunshine and warm tropical breezes, but huddled under umbrellas! Subtropical Storm Alberto headed into the Gulf of Mexico and we were expecting several inches of rain through Monday. Let's all hope that Alberto, the first tropical system of the 2019 hurricane season (that doesn't start until June 1), isn't the first of MANY tropical storms we'll face this summer!

We're excited to announce that a No Smoking ban in all common areas goes into effect June 1, 2019. A letter from the Board of Directors was mailed this past week to all unit owners, reminding them that their guests, renters and vendors are no longer allowed to smoke at the swimming pool and spa, tennis court, Clubhouse, parking lots, greenspace and patios. We've received several letters of support from unit owners who appreciate our efforts to eliminate second-hand smoke in our community.

The only major project we're dealing with this summer is the replacement of all fire sprinkler heads in the condominium buildings and the Clubhouse. We started in Building 1 and will continue in numerical order until the project is complete. Please watch for a letter from the Board of Directors, updating all unit owners about our progress, some of the unforeseen issues we're dealing with and what action the Association is taking to complete the project in a timely fashion.

Have a wonderful summer!

MANAGEMENT OFFICE: (941) 925-1813 Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Community Association Manager: Debbie Fulton Maintenance: Kevin Thomas

Manager’s Corner, Debbie Fulton, CAM, CMCA, AMS, PCAM

Happy Summer!!

Breakfast with Debbie will begin again in the Fall/Winter.

Items of Interest: • The audit has been sent to those who

requested a copy. The report is also on the Pinestone web site

• Gary Engelgau the liaison to the security committee and myself are working on a revamp of the gate entry system. We are also looking into a fob system of entry for the pool and clubhouse. The plan when presented and if approved by the Board over the next couple years will save the Association in the neighborhood of $23,000 annually (the system would alleviate the need for a guard).

• The No Smoking ban in the common element becomes effective on June first.

• In the near future we will also have new pool signage.

Editorial Comment by Terri Kathman, Editor

I feel like I am back in Sarasota with the hot weather we have been having here in Illinois. Our home thermometer hit 98 degrees a couple days ago. I’m not complaining because it is much better than the -20 degrees we had when we left here in January to drive to Pinestone.

I must admit I am enjoying getting my hands in the dirt a little planting flowers and trying to get the yard looking almost as nice as Pinestone. Since we are on the second floor the pent up

gardener in me is ready for some yard work when I get back to my northern home - not that I’m looking for a job gardening when I am down there! Here’s hoping the weather gods are kinder to Florida this year and do not send hurricane force winds to devastate our city and state. Thanks to all those who signed up to be a part of our Disaster Team in case we do have an emergency this summer. Anyone who has not yet volunteered I’m sure would be welcome to join. Just sign up in the library or contact Debbie for more information.

We do miss our Pinestone friends when we are up in Illinois but being able to see family and go to the grandkids ballgames and school activities more than makes up for it. We feel very fortunate that we can get away from the snowy winters in the Chicago area and spend that time with all our wonderful friends in Pinestone and enjoy the warmth of both body and soul. I feel we have the best of both worlds and for that I am forever grateful.

Have a wonderful summer!

TENNIS ANYONE? Do you like to play Tennis? Then come and join the Pinestone Tennis Group. They meet every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:30 am - 10:15 am. All are welcome!

SUNSHINE LADY INFORMATION Our Sunshine Lady, Liz Collister, is the one who sends cards to those Pinestone residents who are ill, hospitalized, have a special

anniversary (25th, 50th), or to the family of those who have passed away. Just contact Liz at 941-925-0579 or [email protected] if you know someone who could use a little sunshine.

DO YOU LIKE TO READ?

The Pinestone Book Group led by Nancy Alger has been meeting for several years and since many of us are looking for a good book to read over the summer we thought we would share the recap of this year’s selections to give everyone some ideas to consider when perusing Amazon or the book aisle.

The most recent book that was discussed was Coming Clean a memoir by Kimberly Rae Miller. The hoarding disorder was the subject of this book and it explored it’s implications for family members. The book was judged to be a worthwhile read.

Another selection this year was Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland which told the story behind the beautiful Tiffany Glass works of art and the women who created them. Many of the items described in this book are on display at the Morse Museum in Winter Park, FL where Kathy Ebert, one of our members was able to visit on her way home and found it very worthwhile.

The most popular book this season was The Alice Network by Kate Quinn which was a historical novel about the women spies active during World Wars I and II.

Recommended for summer reading is Suncoast Empire: Bertha Honore Palmer, Her Family, and the Rise of Sarasota 1910-1982 by Frank Cassell. This is available from Amazon.

Also recommended by our readers: The Heart by Maylis de Kerengal about organ donors The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower about the White House from the perspective of the staff

IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT!

When calling 911 with an emergency you must give the building address and the unit number. That is the only way the emergency personnel

will be able to locate you.

IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT!

Information Hopefully You Will Never Need

But... “IN CASE OF A FIRE WHAT TO DO”

If you happen to have a fire in your condo the smoke detectors and automatic sprinklers may go off. You should get out immediately and go to the fire box on your building and pull the fire alarm. This will alert the fire department and all the other residents of your building to get out of the building. After the fire department has taken care of the situation they will inform everyone when it is okay to return to their condo.

Chuckles for the Month A young girl was walking her dog when a neighbor said, “What a beautiful puppy! Do you have papers for her?”

“We sure do,” the girl replied, “all over the floor.” **********

An elderly man suspected that his wife was developing a hearing problem. One night, he positioned himself across the room from her as she sat in her favorite chair. Softly he asked, “Honey, can you hear me?” When she did not answer, he moved a little bit closer and asked a little bit louder, “Honey, can you hear me?” Still no answer. The man took a few steps forward and spoke up a little louder yet, “Honey! Can you hear me?” Finally, he crept up right behind her and repeated his question loudly right behind her ear. She spun around angrily and barked back at him, “For the fourth time—-yes!”

********** The trouble with being punctual is that no one is there to notice.
