THE PRESIDENT’S HOUSE: THE BEGINNINGTHE PRESIDENT’S HOUSE: THE BEGINNING

• The White House was built between 1792 and 1800 of white painted sandstone.

• It has been the offices and living quarters for every President since John Adams, who along with his wife, Abigail Adams, moved in November 1, 1800.

• The White House is made up of six stories – the Ground Floor, State Floor, Second Floor, and Third Floor as well as a two-story basement.

• President Adam’s would soon draft a proclamation requesting all government employees to report to Washington, as that would now be the location for the federal government, replacing New York.

JEFFERSON RENOVATIONSJEFFERSON RENOVATIONS• The house would not stay in this

form for long, the President to take over for John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, had colonnades added to the west side of the house.

• These housed stables, storage, etc.

RECONSTRUCTIONRECONSTRUCTION

• In 1814, during the War of 1812, the British torched much of Washington, including the White House.

• Only the exterior walls remained, but those had to be torn down as well and reconstructed.

THE WEST WINGTHE WEST WING• By the time the American Civil War came

around, the White House had become overcrowded.

• The location of the White House was in question, as it was on swamp land and fear of diseases such as malaria. Some officials proposed a new Executive home, but Congress rejected the idea.

• In 1891, the addition of an office building on the west side was proposed, now known as the West Wing.

• By the 1920’s, the West Wing addition was completed, which now contained a new Presidential Office, known as the Oval Office.

THE WHITE HOUSE TODAYTHE WHITE HOUSE TODAY• Today the White House is used for

almost all Executive roles.• In addition to the Presidents Oval

Office, and his staffs workplace, The West Wing, there is a press conference room for media addresses, an ornate ballroom and multiple rooms with historic significance.

• There is also a “Situation Room” in the lower basement added in the mid-19th Century where the President can address affairs of national security with his advisors.

EXECUTIVE RESIDENCEEXECUTIVE RESIDENCE• The Executive Residence is used to describe the central part of the White

House first constructed between 1792-1800.• The “Residence” is home to the first family and occupies three floors; the

ground floor, state floor and second floor.• The ground floor houses some of the operations behind the White House, such

as the kitchen, quarters for the wait staff, a floral shop and the White House physician.

• The state floor houses the rooms used in much of the entertainment at the White House, such as the dining rooms.
