Check out our school website at phj.eacs.k12.in.us/

A lot of great information is available, such as our school newsletter,

all upcoming events and pictures from our recent activities.

The Twenty-first Century Scholars Program began in 1990 as Indiana's

way of raising the educational aspirations of low- and moderate-

income families. The program aims to ensure that all Indiana families

can afford a college education for their children. Income-eligible 8th

graders who enroll in the program and fulfill a pledge of good citizenship to the state are guaranteed the cost of up

to four years of undergraduate tuition (unless funds depleted or if the parents’ income changes by graduation date)

at any participating public college or university in Indiana. If the student attends a private institution, the state will

award an amount comparable to that of a public institution. If the student attends a participating proprietary school,

the state will award a tuition scholarship equal to that of Ivy Tech Community College.

We are currently waiting for forms from the 21st Century Scholars at the school, but on-line applications are

available and encouraged. The on-line site is:

https://studentaid.ssaci.in.gov/ScholarEnrollment/Enrollment/UI/GeneralQuery.aspx

Please contact Mr. Venderley (446-0240, ext. 7302) in the Guidance office with more questions.

All 8th grade students will hear more about the program and receive applications once the forms are received from

the state.

Excerpt taken from “No: Why Kids – of all ages – Need to Hear It and Ways Parents can Say It”

By David Walsh, PhD (2007, p277)

The Stakes are High

The world has become flat. This generation of kids will be competing with peers all over the world.

Those who succeed will have to be highly educated and competent. They will need to work hard, delay gratification,

make sacrifices, cooperate with others, and preserver through hardship. Those who are intellectually, emotionally,

and morally flabby will be at a disadvantage. They will need all the psychological muscles they can build, and “No” is

a training regimen to hone those muscles.

The latest brain research confirms what generations of parents have intuitively known: Children need a secure

connection with loving adults to give them the trust and confidence to explore and reach for the stars.

Kids need self-discipline to harness and balance their powerful emotional drive in order to be successful in

school and later in their work and relationships. If dominated by the drive for pleasure, they will become

lazy and self-indulgent. Self discipline entails the ability to say no to oneself.

Saying no to your kids is the key to their developing self-discipline. The word “no” itself is not important.

The concept of No is. You can say “no” in many positive ways.

Parental Influence key to child’s success…

Studies show that early childhood and early adolescence are the two most critical periods in a child’s life.

Schools and parents both have important roles, but every study shows that parents have the biggest influence.

The problem is that many parents of middle school students are already very busy, so how can they find time to

help their children succeed in school? Some simple solutions are to make sure to take the time to talk to your

child!

Use car time: Turn off the radio in the car and discuss life issues and be sure to listen to your child’s

concerns.

Set priorities that have your child at the top of the list!

Spend “quantity time” with your child; quality time is a deceptive myth. One on one time with your child

is vital, and more of it is the best!

Use the off button: Turn off the television, phone and computer. Play a game or take a walk together.

Use this time to just talk!

Bring your criticisms to the teacher and the school instead of discussing and making criticisms in the

child’s presence. Having those discussions in front of or with your child undermines your child’s

education. Encourage your child to be respectful to the teachers and fellow students.

Insist on good behavior on the way to school, at school, and the way home from school.

Be a great role model; live what you preach – be generous, understanding, cooperative, and peaceful.
