Gives an overview of what we’re doing. Starts with global-scale impacts, limits, and representation as the intersection between the two (need to represent adaptation in assessment of global-scale impacts). The outer blob (building resilience) represents our integration with the rest of the Building Resilience theme. The green blob shows our link with the integrated assessment effort CIAS. Then add the QUEST blob, explaining that we’re using the QUEST project to complement and support our global-scale stuff. The yellow blob (Defra…) represents the history, and also the hope that we will get support from Defra to use our global-scale work to address climate policy issues (there is also a link there to the Climate Policy part of Tyndall). The orange blob (water management) represents our linkages to adaptation in practice, and the development of sound methods and guidance for the water industry – we’re looking for support for this

...and if we explicitly incorporate the uncertainties in the type adaptation measures….

... spatial planning, technical regulation, economic priorities, adaptive management, risk management,

cultural preferences, risk psychology …..

But the (monsoon) climate and socio-economic scenarios have many uncertainties…

So is adaptation to climate variability and change, as a part of sustainable development, therefore

impossible?

What we need

The development of an Apollo-type program with an internationally-funded infrastructure, and specifically

(1)human resources that conduct innovative trans-and cross disciplinary research across all domains (social and natural sciences...

(2) a multi-national supercomputing capability that allows the development of global models at typically 1 km resolution;

(3) Earth system models that are adapted to massively parallel multi-petaflop machines (>100,000 processors)

(4) coherent observations, data systems, and shared standards that allow easy exchanges of data

One of the three main residences of the imperial Habsburg family, the palace was originally known as the Blue Court (Blauer Hof). It had been owned in the first part of eighteenth century by Friedrich Karl Graf von Schoenborn. At that time, Schoenborn commissioned famous baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to extend the Blue Court. Parts of the facade then built, including the park side of the northeast wing, still exist. In 1766, Empress Maria Theresa enlarged the building to its present size. During and after the Second World War, the Schloss fell into a state of disrepair. Then in the years between 1972 to 1981, it was completely renovated for IIASA.

To achieve its ambitious research vision, IIASA would have to break down the barriers between nations and disciplines. This it did, building international multidisciplinary teams to confront innumerable global challenges, both long-standing and emerging. For example, a study on water pollution carried out in the 1980s by a team of IIASA chemists, biologists, and economists still forms the basis of modern water policy design in Japan, USA, and the former USSR. IIASA is also independent of any government, having progressed during the cold war with two major funders – USA and USSR- highly suspicious of one another, IIASA has the structure and process to ensure its independence. Something that I was sad to read about with Prof Nutt and the classification of cannabis.
