Simon Langton Architecture Workshop
PAVILION.
Simon Langton Grammar School - 2013
Over the course of this workshop we would like you to explore pavilions as a typology, investigate the school as a backdrop for your ideas and formulate and produce your own proposals for a pavilion or small space within the grounds of Simon Langton.
We encourage you when exploring/choosing a site to consider both the physical and ethereal elements that make up the space. Consider how your design will relate to its environment: the surrounding buildings, massing, climatic conditions, views, materiality and its place within the school community.
The expected outcomes of this session will be to produce a considered proposal that we can discuss at the end of the day. We have outlined below a sequence of studies that will guide you through this process:
• Choosingasitewithaconsideredrationale• Investigatetheelementsthatarefoundonthesite• Initialideasthatrespect,enhance,questionoracknowledgethecontext• Developmentofideasandproductionofaphysicalmodel• Accompanying2Ddesignworktoexplainyourdesign
All this work will culminate in a presentation afternoon where you will be expected to display and explain your work to a professional standard.

Small spaces can provide a place to retreat, shelter, reflect or escape.Because of their modest scale, these spaces must be meticulously detailed and considered, whilst also carefully relating to their environment.

“Architects in the past have tended to concentrate their attention on the building as a static object. I believe dynamics are more important: the dynamics of people, their
interaction with spaces and environmental condition.”
