Retirement with thanks. Many thanks to my 3 Dalmatians - Ch Carmen UD, Ch Jonah UD and Ch Echo UD who hung in with me for 18 years as therapy dogs through Pet Partners.

Together we made a total of 1520 visits which included hospital psychiatric units, rehab facilities, assisted living homes, eating disorder groups, children’s foster care homes and others.

What a rewarding way to share our beloved pets!

Building Housekeeping (for when we get back in the building)

Notice to members and their guests. Please follow the rules below concerning practice time at our building, reprinted from the Standing Rules of GKCDTC.

Practice rings are available to members only at the following fee: 30 min. For $5 per person. Members must sign and date the liability waiver sign in sheet. Members may also rent practice time on a consecutive 3 month basis. The fee for unlimited use of the building is $65 per member per 3 months. If a member who is paying for practice time on a quarterly basis is using a ring for practice and another member waiting to pay for practice time arrives, then practice time is limited to 30 minutes for individual, 60 minutes maximum for a group (3 or more.)

A member may bring a guest to share a ring. The guest rate is $5 per person per 30 min. All non members must sign and date the liability waiver sign in sheet.

As compensation for their services: instructors, assistant instructors, officers, training committee members, event secretaries, printed material, and voice mail volunteers have unlimited use of the building for practice while they are instructing or holding office at no cost. The practice time may be used any time class is not in session, the building is not being used for a club event or rented. If another member is waiting to use the ring practice time is limited to 30 min.

Practice ring will not be available for 1 hour prior to first scheduled class time.

What to do when there is nothing to do

We are faced with a trying time - an unprecedented event where people are tasked with social distancing to help “flatten the curve,” and slow the rate of infection of Covid-19. Work, sports, education, graduation, vacation, significant events such as weddings and funerals, and dog trials have all been canceled and postponed. Yet human and canine lives go on. We may need to get creative to stimulate not only our dogs brains, but our own brains as well.

Some ideas from our members:

* I have been running dogs in our pasture. We are fortunate to have over three acres fenced.

* Cleaning house - no more excuses!!

* Still “doodling” on sits/stays/working on articles and bathing and grooming which was overdue anyway!

* Since I have a young puppy and puppy class isn't currently available, I  train at home.

* TRACKING! It's  one of the healthiest sports

* Beginning scent work with my pup

* Introducing a pup to the A-frame placed flat on the ground.

* Evenings spent with a good book & a drink while enjoying a relaxing soak in the tub. Me - not the dogs!

* Long walks with the dogs while working on some focused heeling.

* Catching up with friends, close and far.

* Puzzles, books, and binging TV that has nothing to do with current events.

* Discover podcasts - you can listen to true crime and train dogs at the same time!

We will get through this. The most important thing is to be there for one another. Reach out virtually, be kind, stay home, and wash your hands!

Canine Legislation - State legislation - HB2241 and HB2244 are identical bills that would allow municipalities and counties to regulate dogs, provided any ordinances were not breed specific. HB2241 and HB2244 had a public hearing in the Judiciary Committee on February 11. Kim Krohn gave public testimony. The bill passed out of the Judiciary Committee and was referred to the Rules Administrative Oversight Committee, where it passed out of that committee. The combined bills have now been placed on the House Bills for Perfection Calendar, so the legislation is moving. HB2241 is sponsored by Rep. David Gregory and HB2244 is sponsored by Rep. Ron Hicks. Both are from the St. Louis area.

HB2211, sponsored by Rep. Sonya Anderson from Springfield, is a bill that would put the onus on organizations that are confiscating animals to have reasonable bonds for care of the animals. It also requires a deposition hearing before the court within ten days, as opposed to 30, to decide the disposition of the animals. The animals can’t be sterilized until the hearing is held (unless it’s necessary for health reasons). If the animals are examined and determined to be healthy, and the charges are dismissed or the person is found to be not guilty of abuse or neglect, the animals and care bond are returned to the owner. Any boarding or medical expenses are to be borne by the confiscating agency.
