Road Running Championship 2019/20

The club road race championship will be conducted along the same lines as last year, as follows:

Format of the 2019/20 ADAC Road Race Championship

The championship will be based on a specific list of races (see below).

To qualify for the championship you will need to have competed in at least 5 of the listed races, and covering more than one distance (i.e. cannot qualify with 5 x 5K races).

If you have run in more than 5 races your best 5 age graded performances will count.

As the year progresses, and in the final analysis, your 5 best age graded performances will be added together and averaged.

The overall championship will be based on the best average age graded performance across the year.

Because Age Grading takes account of gender there is no need for separate championships – Males and Females will compete against each other.

The age grading will be arrived at by using the Runners World Age Grade Calculator

(runnersworld.com) – which utilises the 2015 World Masters Athletics tables.

Qualifying races are as follows:

Wilmslow Half Marathon Sunday 24th March

Salford 10K Friday 19th April

Mid Cheshire 5K Friday 26th April

Tatton Park 10K Sunday 12th May

Colshaw Hall 10K Sunday 23rd June

Preston 10 Mile Sunday 17th November

Wilmslow 10K Sunday 24th November

Stockport 10 Mile Sunday 8th December (TBC)

Alsager 5 Mile Sunday 2nd February 2020 (TBC)

*Any Marathon* (see below)

*Any Parkrun* (see below)

“Any Marathon” & “Any Parkrun”:

Club members will have the opportunity to include their best marathon and/or parkrun in the final figures. The runs must have taken place between 1st April 2019 and 31st January 2020 to count.

I will send out a reminder for you to provide me with details early next year.

So come on everybody there is plenty to go at, get entering these races and let’s get involved!!

Welsh Castles Relay

Caernarvon to Cardiff

Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June

For anyone new to the club this is an annual relay event that ADAC compete in each year. It is a two day 20-stage relay over 211 miles on mostly roads and plenty of hills.

It starts in Caernarfon and ends in Cardiff.

Each leg has a mass start at a set time, full details can be found here:

http://www.lescroupiersrunningclub.org.uk/welsh-castles-relay-2016/ The whole weekend is a great fun event with lots of shouting cheering and cowbells involved.

Just turn up and do your own leg, or for the best fun, do your own leg then follow the race to Cardiff.

We have an overnight stop at Newtown mid-Wales where camping is available or book a B & B.

In the past we have had a mini bus, or as we like to call it a fun bus, which we would love to do again if we can get (a) 2 drivers and (b) enough athletes who want to travel for the whole weekend. If you want to get involved or want more information please email [email protected]

or speak to Carole or Graham Harrison at the track.

Silver for Dave Cowlishaw in World Masters Indoors

Dave reports

I really enjoyed catching up with the Alty people at the Nationals and of course am honoured by the life membership of the club. They gave me the new vest when I was there, which is great so will be sporting that with pride whenever in UK.

Following that, and I kept it quiet after last year’s Málaga (6th in World Masters last September) fiasco but did the World Indoors in Torun (Poland) and got silver medal behind super talent and new kid on the block Mark Symes from GB. Very happy to put Málaga behind me with this, it was the best result I could not risk running from front and blowing up again, and beat the Italian who was 2nd in Malaga, Symes won M45 in Málaga at 49 years old which is a huge achievement he's only been in the Sport 4 years!

Torun was an absolutely fantastic experience, even though only there 3 days I was able to focus and block everything else out, and I really benefited this time from getting into that cocooned championship world and sharing that unique experience with other competitors. The camaraderíe in these Masters’ events is second to none, brilliant atmosphere on and off the track. I travelled out and back with 2 Madrid based Spanish guys and while there had meals etc. with them and other people. By now I know almost all the British and Spanish middle-distance guys and we've become friends.

After the semi-final (5pm Friday) the final was scheduled for 10.22am Saturday so it was a case of getting back to the hotel as soon as possible and resting up, went out for dinner but not for long. Re. Final strategy, I knew Symes has a devastating change of pace and the only way to beat him normally could be a hard pace from the gun but a) having only had 1 track race a month ago in a slow time so not at optimum race sharpness, b) not wanting to risk blowing up again like Malaga (could not make the same mistake twice at least not consecutively!!) I decided to go with the race and gradually wind it up final 3rd if nobody else did, plus if Symes passed at any point to hang on his coat tails and try to reel him back in. The gun went and with an outside draw I was able to easily position into 2nd behind Haines fellow Brit, and I was surprised when Symes took it on with 2 laps to go. That really helped as I could go with him as we opened up a gap on the rest winding it up and get ahead of the Italian Moroccan who won silver in Málaga. At the bell I was running to win then there was a sharp acceleration from Symes right in the tight first bend, opening up 5 metres going into the back straight which he managed to hold to the line, I felt I held form and was happy to hold on for 2nd, I wasn’t disappointed to not win this time, guess because unlike Málaga it wasn’t the sole objective, this was about getting back into the mix and the medals. I was also happy with a sub 1.20 last 500m, 1.37 last 600m, being able to change the pace from 4.30 to 4.00 and it gives confidence to target 4.10 this summer.

The race formed part of Super Saturday where the Brits won Gold M55 to M40 with the Spanish guys right up there challenging, they were great races which I saw trackside, particularly impressed with Guy Bracken, Dean Richardson, James Thie and of course Mark Symes!, We all enjoyed the medal ceremonies and felt very proud on the podium in spite of Brexit! Followed that with a few beers in the town centre before I had to leave back for Warsaw flight home and by all accounts, they had a huge day and night of celebrations. It was a shame to miss all that!!

In summary, a real blessing to be part of Torun World Indoors and Masters Athletics which goes from strength to strength, never seen a championships so well organised!!

As most readers will be aware, club subscriptions run from 1st April to 31st March in line with

England Athletics financial year. Members will be asked to pay their own subs online using the

England Athletics Portal. As last year, you will receive an email with instructions on how to renew

your subscription on-line.

In summary the email will contain a link to www.englandathletics.org/myprofile where you

can login, check and update your personal details. There is an option to renew your membership

and pay your subs. England Athletics will retain your affiliation fee and pay the remainder of your

subs to the ADAC club account directly.

For 2019, ADAC Membership Fees will be increased for competing seniors to £50,

over 65s £30. Junior membership remains at £25 except for U11s £20.

It is important that you complete payment promptly after receiving the email to enable you to continue to benefit from reduced race entry fees and to represent the club in league meetings and championships.

Life members and coaches are exempt from this process.

However, if you do not have access to the internet, or wish to make alternative arrangements to pay your subs, please speak to a member of the committee at the track.
