A call came into rescue stating that a family was in crisis and that many Bassets needed to come into rescue at one time. The total count was 11 Bassets, and a 14-day notice to remove the hounds had been given to the family. The local rescue was full, low on foster homes and resources, so there was no room at the inn during this crisis. An appointment was made for the intake coordinator to see the hounds and evaluate them. What she saw at the initial meeting made it crystal clear that time was of the essence for these hounds and the family. A midnight call for help went out. Over the course of the next week, e-mails and phone calls flew, resources were gathered, assistance was asked for, and a team was put together. At this time we have to thank the movers and shakers who put this together and made it happen:

The on-site team: Susan Bracht (AZBHR), Jessica Crenshaw (AZBHR), Terri Ditsch (AZBHR), Gina & Grace Erispaha (BaRNI & AZBHR), Sherry Moore (BHCA, BaRNI, & AZBHR), Nancy Murbach, DVM, Nora Skog (AZBHR), Dawn Smith (BaRNI), and Jim & Mimi Tysseling (BHCA). Financial assistance and resources that stepped up in the crisis and to whom these hounds owe their lives: Arizona Basset Hound Rescue, Basset Rescue Network, Inc. at Daphneyland, Basset Hound Club of America Foundation, Cari Cannon (BHCA)m Sue Frischmann (BHCA), Bruce Garvin (BaRNI at Daphneyland, David & Leslie Hunt (BaRNI as Daphneyland, Edward & Morgan Keifhaber (BHCA), Sherry Moore (BHCA), Jim & Sherrie Strachan (BaRNI at Daphneyland), Jim & Mimi Tysseling (BHCA), Janis Weatherbee (AZBHR & BaRNI at Daphneyland), and Sandi Wittenberg (BHCA & BaRNI at Daphneyland).

Our team on the ground went in, assisted the family with the surrender and goodbyes to the hounds, bathed, groomed, cleaned, and provided immediate vet care at the scene. The family is keeping one Basset, and we are monitoring health care on that basset. One hound was immediately transported to the closest hospital in life-threatening crisis. Another hound was critical and went home with members of the team. Both of those hounds are now in their Forever Homes - with their medical foster families. The team then transported the hounds to a local well-equipped boarding facility, and medications were begun. Nutritional rehab was started immediately, and evaluations were arranged, while blood testing results came back. These hounds were in serious health crisis. The family also is in serious health crisis, and assistance for them has also been sought. In early August, we flew to Arizona for the transport of these hounds to continue their recovery here at Daphneyland where the costs would not be as high and where they would be in Basset-specific daily care.

The daily care of these AZBHR Specials is being handled by Basset Rescue Network, Inc. at Daphneyland. Thank you to the folks who have given them constant love and deal with their needs: Roswinn Pet Hospital, Kit Bennett, Susan Cleavers, Rita Dluzak, Bruce Garvin, Katie Miller, Julie & Nigel Stevenson, Kimberly Walker, and Janis Weatherbee.

We have just released the hounds that were transported to Daphneyland from isolation, having finished their 30-day quarantine and medication round. The improvement and response in these hounds has been remarkable, and we would now like to introduce you to them. They are still about a month away from being ready for a new home; however, we would like to start the screening process for future potential families. Spay/neuter and medical funding is still needed at this time. If you would like to donate to these hounds, please send checks to Daphneyland or donate through our website, www.Daphneyland.com and memo AZBHR Specials, or just click on the PayPal button below.

If you are interested in adopting any of these hounds or any other of our hounds, please complete the Adoption Application on our website and mail it to us. All of the information is on www.daphneyland.com.

Now, we are pleased to introduce the lovely group of dogs we are calling “The Arizona Specials”.

And now, some words of advice for all of you animal lovers!

PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR LOVED ONES, make sure your Advance Directives, Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney (medical), financial Power of Attorney, and Last Will & Testament are in place and kept up to date. None of us think that it is a particularly pressing matter and tend to procrastinate but DON’T! You never know what tomorrow will bring: whether it is illness or accident, your life can change in a heartbeat. Suddenly you cannot care for your pets and you don’t have a plan (in writing) to indicate what should be done when first responders come to attend to you. If there is no plan, then they call Animal Control.

1. If you have dogs (or any animals), make provisions for them to be cared for too. Across the country, Animal Control takes companion animals from their homes until a family member can be contacted. That family member could either arrange boarding for them or relinquish them to Animal Control.

2. Prepare a complete list of your dogs, with a copy of their AKC registrations, and indicate who you would like to take care of your dogs in case of your incapacitation. Co-ownership should be clearly outlined, with contact information.

3. Keep a list of medications, shots and any special needs up to date monthly, along with the name and contact numbers of your veterinarian.

4. PLEASE talk to your family and friends to ask them if they would take your dogs in case of your death. Give them a list of homes you approve for taking your dogs.

You would be amazed how many times well-made plans are not updated and family/friend resources are unable to help. PLEASE ALSO LEAVE A BACK-UP PLAN – Contact your local rescue organization and make arrangements. Have your wishes well known IN WRITING!

It would be nice if you set designate some money in your estate to be distributed to those people or organizations that agree to take your dogs. Make that list NOW, and put a copy of the list with your Will and other important documents. Send a copy of it to anyone who agrees to take your dog(s) so they are informed also. Update the list when there is a change so that “no dog is left behind.” Also, with those emergency numbers you leave on your refrigerator for first responders to contact, include a person who has a copy of your list and will come and take care of your animals, so they will not have to go through the trauma of being taken by Animal Control.

Again: PLEASE make sure that you have a Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney, and your Will is in order and up to date! Make sure your wishes regarding the care and placement of your animals are written down VERY SPECIFICALLY, witnessed and notarized, and all of your family and/or significant others are well informed and have copies.

The greatest legacy you can leave your beloved animals is to take care of them after you are gone as well as you are taking care of them now.

DAPHNEYLAND CALENDAR OF EVENTS

BE PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY Purchasing or building a kit is a great first step, but won't be a lot of help in the event of an emergency if you are not familiar with how and when to use the items. I would highly recommend any or all of the following to be prepared in the event of an emergency: • Take a pet first aid class - check with your veterinarian, community

college or the Red Cross. • Read pet first aid or animal health books - also a good idea to

include one in the kit. Related: The Complete Healthy Dog Book and Speaking for Spot.

• Use the Jive Media iPhone app for Pet First Aid or similar (there are several) - to familiarize yourself and have "on hand" at all times.

• Familiarize yourself with pet emergency clinics - in your area and to places you travel to. Related: Book Review - Pet ER Guide

Items to Include in your first aid kit • Scissors - for cutting out things matted in fur, freeing your pet from

entanglements. • Sterile eye wash - make sure it is eye wash, not contact lens solution. • Tweezers - to remove splinters, or other foreign materials from wounds. • Tick remover tool - if you are in a tick-infested area, consider one of

many tools to easily remove ticks and reduce additional damage or infection during removal.

• Ear wash - speak to your vet about what one would be best for your pet.

• Toenail trimmer and styptic pencil - for torn toenails. Cornstarch also works for torn nails, but not for skin wounds.

• QuikClot or similar - to stop bleeding (wounds). • Tape - preferably the 1" white medical tape. Easy to tear off and holds

well. • Roll Gauze - used for bandaging, an aid to stop bleeding, and padding

for splints. • Vet Wrap - this is a conforming bandage wrap used over a telfa pad or

roll gauze that comes in many colors and two sizes (2" and 4" - pick one that best fits your pet). It clings to itself and is semi-watertight. Caution is advised to not wrap this too tight. It is best to unwrap it from the roll, then use it for the bandage with very light tension. It can be purchased at many feed stores (horse section) and some veterinary clinics.

• Telfa pads - non-stick dressings for bandaging a wound. • Bandage Scissors - these scissors have a blunted blade to easily slip

between skin and bandage material and not cut the patient's skin. • Antiseptic wash or wipes - look for non-stinging preparations such as

chlorhexidine or betadine. Rubbing alcohol is not good for open sores or wounds.

• Antibiotic ointment - over-the-counter "general purpose" antibiotic ointment for light use with minor skin wounds. Not for eye use. Caution is advised for animals that may ingest by licking. The antibiotics are absorbed via the skin, remaining ointment may collect debris or actually slow healing in some cases. Use with discretion.

• Vet-prescribed pain relief (NSAID) - speak to your vet about obtaining as-needed first aid kit pain relief. Do not use human prescription or over-the-counter pain medications for pets. Some medications, like Tylenol, are poisonous and may be fatal to pets.

• Latex or plastic exam gloves - for your protection and your pet's protection - use when the situation is messy.

• A muzzle - or materials to make a muzzle. Even the most well-trained animals may bite when injured or afraid.

• Thermometer - know the normals for dog and cat vital signs and how to use the thermometer.

• Water-based lubricating jelly - for use with rectal thermometers. • Ice and hot packs - cool down skin after a burn or keep an animal

warm if hypothermic. Always use a cloth between the pack and skin and check frequently for redness or irritation.

• Extra towels, wash cloths and a blanket - use for washing, keeping warm/cool, and if necessary, a way to transport the injured pet (sling).

• Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) - for stings and allergic reactions - speak with your vet first about proper dosing.

• Syringe or large eye dropper - to flush wounds or administer fluids by mouth.

• A list of phone numbers - your regular vet, the emergency vet, animal control, and animal poison control numbers. Another tip: program these numbers in your cell phone.

• A sturdy box - ideally plastic or metal - to hold all of your supplies and is easy to carry with you will complete your kit.

How You Can Help Sponsor a Basset Run Would you like to make an impact this year? We have 44 dog runs that need sponsoring. For $100 per month, you can help us care for the dogs in your kennel. After three months of continuous sponsorship, we’ll even put your name on the kennel plaque. For a donation of $1,200, we’ll automatically put your name on a kennel.

Who Do You Know Who Would Love to Be Loved By A Basset? One way you can help us help more hounds is to talk about where you adopted your basset or about your Daphneyland experiences. Even if you’re not in a position to adopt another hound at the moment, perhaps someone you know would love to join the Daphneyland Alumni Association.

Here are some tangible ways your donations are used: $ 6 = 5 gallons of bleach $ 12 = A Box of Biscuits $ 50 = A Veterinary Exam $ 100 = Run Sponsorship $ 150 = A Neuter $ 200 = A Spay $ 2,000 = Food for a Month $12,000 = Monthly Expenses

Host a Fundraiser This fall, one of our angels opened her home for a benefit for Daphneyland. We enjoyed a lovely evening complete with live music, great food and a silent auction and did a lot of good. In addition to benefits like this, there are a number of ways you can use your talents to help the hounds:

• Hold a benefit yard sale • Donate an item for the silent auction or opportunity drawing (This year at the Basset Hound Picnic we were able to hold an

opportunity drawing for a wonderful basset quilted wall hanging thanks to a generous donation)

• Work with a local restaurant to host a fundraiser Volunteer in person or by long distance We have many needs for volunteers! You can volunteer at Daphneyland in the kennel and spend time with the dogs too! We also need help with some areas that can be accomplished long distance.

• Web Designer • Webmaster • Newsletter editor • Volunteer Coordinator • Event Coordinator • Adoption follow-up Coordinator • Grant Writer • Assistant Shelter Coordinator • Publicity Coordinator

SPECIAL NEEDS

As always, the hounds have many needs. We have several suggestions of items we need for the hounds. • For Christmas each year, every hound gets

a new toy ... their favorite toys are plush dog toys that squeak or make another sound.

• On New Year’s Eve, every hound gets a

new blanket to help them keep warm on chilly nights (gently used blankets and quilts are fine).

• We also need RELIABLE volunteers for the

following positions which can be done "long distance": Webmaster Adoption Coordinator, Fund Raising Coordinators

• The easiest ways to donate if you do not live

in the area is to send a Costco gift card or make a cash donation. Please consider scheduling a recurring monthly donation. Monetary donations may be made through PayPal on www.daphneyland.com.
