Shortly into owning their own company they realize running a roong business takes more than just being a great roofer. The business side of a roong company tends to bring the most headaches, causes prot loss and prevents entrepreneurs from realizing their dreams. Confucius said, “A smart person learns from his mistakes; A wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” I hope this insight will help you avoid mistakes and continue your success.

Part 1: How to grow a successful roofing company

Small roong companies tend to be more successful than larger ones. They typically have a higher prot margin, less debt and greater customer loyalty. The reasons are simple. Small business owners are directly involved in every aspect of the business process. Think of the owner as a hub in a wheel. Each of the dierent business divisions are spokes in that wheel. The four big spokes are marketing, sales, operations and adminis-tration. Every decision made in the business goes through the owner as they have complete control over the entire operation.

Opinions expressed in any of the articles submitted to the Shear Bull are not necessarily the opinions of the Palm Beach County Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association. The Shear Bull is a forum for those involved in the roofing industry including building officials & inspectors.

Promises made at the initial sales estimate are delivered through completion. Eventually word gets out and referrals bring in a steady stream of work. But what happens when the business starts to grow? It’s not humanly possible for one person to run everything, not even with today’s technology. Things typically get out of balance when the owner has to rely on others. The only way to ensure continued success is to empower employees. Follow these guidelines:

Message From the President

As we welcome the New Year, I want to thank the mem-bers for allowing me to serve as your new President. My goal is to grow our association. The Board has lowered the annual dues with the hope that we can gain new members and bring back prior members. The cost of our monthly dinner meetings has also been lowered.

We are starting to see some day light on the horizon with respect to roong work/projects. The primary goal of our association is to promote our industry to the public. But just as important is the establishment of a forum for roong contractors to learn more about the changes in the industry. For our supplier and manufacturer mem-

NEW

bers it is a good networking opportunity, but for the small business contractor there is a need for information… information on running a small business and information on new techniques, systems and products. In order to compete in the market place we need to learn how best to operate our business in addition to the providing of quality work with good customer service.

As we plan our upcoming programs, we ask for your help in choosing speakers and subjects that can help you. In the past, we have had some good programs but as is true in all situations we had some that were not so interesting. This year send us your requests; it only takes a short message via, phone, fax or email. Tell us what will keep you coming to the monthly meetings or what will nally attract you to them. You will notice the articles in our Shear Bull will concentrate on running your business from marketing to technology. Read them and learn.

Our January meeting will be our annual joint meeting with Building Ocials. Please mark your calendar and join your fellow roofers in this important meeting. I look forward to a protable and successful year for all of you and hope to see you at our meetings and functions.

Please support your association…it doesn’t cost….it pays.

...doing other daily tasks employees can do. Jim Collins in the book Good to Great says, “You get the right people on the bus, the wrong people o the bus and the right people in the right seats. When you do the bus drives itself.” Planning for growth is critical. The common way to grow a company is by increasing marketing. The thought being if marketing increases, leads increase, sales increase, work increases and money is made. I wish it were that easy, but it’s not as you may have learned. Increasing marketing alone only causes the business to run lopsided. Without additional sales people leads are burned and potential customers become upset. Without trained crews work isn’t completed correctly causing call backs and loss of money. Without enough capital to nance increased payroll the company can ruin account status and cause dissent. The way to successfully grow a roong company is to increase the length of each spoke in the business wheel slightly, all at the same time.

...continued from front page

Here are the 7 steps:1. Identify one improvement in each of the four key business areas: Marketing, Sales, Operations and Administration. “If it ain’t broke, break it!” Sam Walton2. Set a timeline for implementation.3. Quietly work on each division behind the scenes.4. Test each improvement prior to launch.5. Launch the new improvements close to each other.6. Usher in the change personally to verify adoption and insure success.7. Repeat and grow the wheel even bigger.

This month’s homework is to empower one employee, grow your business wheel by one level and read the book Good to Great or E-Myth.
