    About Us:

    Diversitat, also known as Geelong Ethnic Communities Council, is a registered charitywhose history reaches back more than thirty years. Diversitat represents over 70,000people of all ethnic and cultural heritages throughout the Geelong region and has 38affiliated communities. From a single office of five staff in 1976, Diversitat has grown tooperate over 10 sites in Geelong and one in Colac. Today Diversitat operates as aregistered charity delivering a wide range of programs and services throughout theBarwon Region and beyond.

    Stitch Sewing Program:

    The Stitch Sewing Program brings women from diverse cultural backgrounds togetherwith volunteers and allows participants to share the sewing skills from their cultureswhile developing new skills through interaction and learning from each other.Theprogram is designed to teach sewing skills and encourages development of Englishskills and social connections in a welcoming environment. We are always seeking newvolunteers to be involved for this program, so if you have some free time, know how tosew and like to empower women we would like to hear from you.

    Volunteer role outline As a Volunteer within the Stitch Sewing Program, it isexpected that you will:

    Commit two to three hours a week of your time to theprogram;

    Adhere to the instructions provided by the programcoordinator

    Be willing to learn and open to working with womenfrom different cultural backgrounds.

    A volunteer with the Stitch Sewing Program is required to:

    Comply with all Diversitat policies and proceduresrelating to the program including the Volunteer Policy,Confidentiality, Code of Conduct, Complaints /Grievances; and,

    Seek the support of staff at Diversitat relating to anyconcerns or issues they have encountered whilstvolunteering.

    Characteristics and

    skills required

    The successful applicant will possess:

    An understanding of and empathy with people fromdiverse cultural backgrounds;

    Sewing skills.

    A patient and non judgemental attitude;

    Ability to be able to work independently

    Good interpersonal and communication skills

    Aged over 18 years.

    Proficiency in using the English language, both writtenand oral.

    What you get out of it Practical experience working with people with culturaland linguistically diverse backgrounds.

    An opportunity to empower and support people whoare newly arrived in Australia.

    Time commitment Two to three hours per week (minimum 12 monthcommitment).

    11am to 2pm on Wednesdays11am to 3pm on Thursdays

    Volunteers will also have to commit to initial training sessions,workshops (as required).

    Location The Stitch Sewing Program is based in the Womens Shedat the Northern Community Hub, Norlane.

    Reports to Stitch Sewing Program Coordinator

    Application process:

    All applicants are required to submit a cover letter addressing applicants characteristics

    and skills as well as a current CV with two referees listed.

    Successful applicants will be notified of their progress shortly after interviews and will be

    expected to be available for a cross cultural training session and program induction in

    the following weeks.
