Course DescriptionRefiners and strategic planners today are having to develop plans for investing in new refinery processes that will meet the significant changes in product supply. This being the result of changing demand patterns due to volatile crude and product prices, new crude oil sources, large new efficient export refineries, and increasingly stringent environmental pressures. All of these changes affect the profitability of refineries and there is a current need to examine how investment in new process units can meet changing demands and counter these threats.

Many potential processes can be examined, and this course is intended to guide investment planners through the many options and focus on those processes that are most likely to help in this situation. The course will share the lessons learned from many profitability improvement and upgrading studies and help participants to focus on those process changes that are most likely to be selected. Future changes in product specifications will be discussed along with the implications to the refiner.

After completing this course you will: Understand the changes occurring in the global crude oil and product supply and demand balances and the

impact on refineries

Examine the impact of different refinery configurations, especially for gasoline and diesel production and on bottoms upgrading

Appreciate which new processes are best employed to improve profitability and meet changing product demands

Look at the key bottoms upgrading options in more detail and understand the pros and cons of each

Use experience gained from many profitability improvement and upgrading studies to guide participants to the best solution(s)

Discuss how Linear Programming (LP) is used to evaluate the processing options and compare the economics of the key options

Produce a Master Plan that will allow projects to be sequenced logically at minimum overall capital cost

Who Should AttendThis is an important course for all plant manager, management engineers, analysts and strategic planners involved in planning the future development of refineries, whether based in the refinery or in a strategic planning group in a country or regional office.

About your Expert Faculty: John Metcalfe John Metcalfe’s first career was with ExxonMobil. For 33 years, he was involved in Planning & Scheduling and Configuration Studies for much of that time, at refinery, regional and corporate levels, and for the last 15 years had a global role specialising in Refinery Optimisation and Profitability. Then followed 5 years with UOP, during which time their Consulting business was grown into a significant presence in Europe, the Middle East and the FSU.

John has more recently been Group Manager in the expanding team at Jacobs Consultancy’s London office, helping to grow their involvement in refining, chemical and petrochemical consulting for the financial, investment and operating community in Europe, FSU, Africa and the Middle East. He continues to specialise in grass-roots and revamp configuration studies for refining and petrochemical investment projects. He is currently working with an Indian refiner to improve profitability and continues to conduct training course and seminars on Refining Economics and Master Planning for major projects.

TWO DAY COURSE AGENDA

DAY 1EXAMING THE CHANGES OCCURING IN THE REFINING ENVIRONMENT The global crude oil and product supply and

demand balances

The impact of shale oil and gas developments in the USA

The impact of major new export refineries, especially in the Middle East

The impact of these developments on refining operations in Europe and the Far East

STUDY DIFFERENT REFINERY CONFIGURATIONSEspecially for Gasoline and Diesel Production and bottoms upgrading For gasoline: need for cracked naphtha, addition

of isomerisation, aromatics extraction and other petchem options

For diesel: CDU cut point changes, use of additives, hydroprocessing

Bottoms conversion: coking alternatives, residue hydrocracking, solvent deasphalting & other options

Disposal of heavy residual components, electricity generation

DAY 2UNDERSTAND THE PROS & CONS OF EACH PROCESS AND THEIR IMPACT ON PROFITABILITY AND PRODUCT SUPPLY to meet changing gasoline specifications and

change gasoline production

To change the gasoline/diesel ratio

To upgrade fuel oil to clean products and review the pros and cons of each process option

Look at the key bottoms upgrading options in more detail and suggest the most likely upgrading route(s)

Review the experience gained from many upgrading studies and guide participants to the likely best solution(s)

DISCUSSION ON HOW LINEAR PROGRAMMING (LP) CAN BE USED TO EVALUATE THE PROCESSING OPTIONS

DETERMINE AND COMPARE THE PROJECT ECONOMICS OF THE LIKELY KEY OPTIONS

UNDERSTANDING PRODUCTION OF A MASTER PLAN Show how projects can be sequenced logically at

minimum overall capital cost

Combine mini-projects into a few large projects to increase construction efficiency
