Get to Know our MembersSalvos
e idea of Salvos (Latin for survival) was born of our feeling that something was desperately missing from our area. An idea evolved from simply bringing Krav Maga to e Gorge to developing a place where people could train all aspects of self-defense. More than a one day seminar here or there, we oer a place where consistent coaching is available and a survival mindset is framed. Si vis pacem, para bellum, loosely translated to have peace, prepare for war. Firearms. For us, this means smart, safe use an understanding of guns. Although we know there is a spread between those that love rearms and those that oppose gun ownership, most would agree that everyone owning a gun should be accountable for its safe handling and use. Getting comfortable with guns in a safe environment such as our virtual gun range is a gateway to understanding, appreciation and training. Fitness. At Salvos this involves classes that incorporate ghting concepts into fun, challenging, full-body workouts. Each class has a dierent theme, be it HIIT, pilates, TRX, kickboxing, etc. Classes are oered at a per class fee to make them accessible to everyone, including busy parents, working folks and people who have gym memberships elsewhere and are looking to supplement their regular workouts. Fighting. Krav Maga is an Israeli based system for defending against an attacker. At Salvos we are incredibly fortunate to have Krav Maga Global Instructor Chris Green, Expert One as our head instructor. He is the founder and owner of Invictus Defense Academy, commuting twice per month from Beaverton to lead seminars on Krav for the community. We have more to oer than room will allow, so we welcome anyone to contact us about private lessons, group parties, world travel preparation and more.

Happy Birthday to e Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce January 31st, marked the 135th Birthday for the Chamber. According to e History of Wasco County this is how it all began. On January 22, 1883, the rst steps were taken to organize the Board of Trade, with Col. T. S. Lang as President and F. Pierce Mays, the secretary. A Committee which included Robert Mays, C.N. ornbury, S.L. Brooks, H.M. Beall and J.W. French were tasked to draw up the constitution and by-lays which were adopted on January 31, 1883. e original board, which included 5 board members, encouraged local business men of e Dalles to enroll in the club. eir rst projects included the building of highways for better roads for hauling freight and passengers and the construction of a bridge across the Columbia River at e Dalles. In e Dalles directory of 1898 the organization was called e Dalles Commercial Club. In 1910 the directory listed the organization as e Dalles Business Men’s Association, which was located at 207 Washington St. Sometime around 1914 e Dalles Commercial Club moved to property owned by the railroad. In 1937 the oce was then moved to its current location at 404 W. 2nd St. During World War 1 (1917-1918) the organization changed the name to e Dalles Chamber of Commerce. I wonder if this is when they allowed women to be part of the origination. Lisa Rundell Washington Federal

Business of The Month
BusinessMonth
of theBusinessMonth
e small business of the month program is designed to recognize the dedication, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by small businesses within e Dalles community. e goal of the monthly award is to highlight a small business and give them extra marketing exposure to aid in growing their business. We have asked NW Natural, as our 2018 Business of the Year, to select the Business of the Month. e business is selected based on their quality of customer service, willingness to go above and beyond, and overall impact in our community.
e Business of the month for January is Bandit Glass. Both Wayne & Dick Scheeld are quick to respond to our windshield needs at NW Natural. As you can imagine with a eet of vehicles driving the Columbia Gorge roads throughout the year, we are bound to have broken or chipped windshields. Bandit Glass is just a phone call away, they work with our crews' schedules, which means sometimes showing up aer hours to x our chips. ey continue to do such a professional job that many of us have them repair our personal vehicles as well. We highly recommend that you look to call Bandit Glass the next time you need quick, professional windshield service for your eet or personal vehicles.

Community KudosCGCC Ranked #4 Community College in Oregon With student ages ranging from nine to 89, Columbia Gorge Community College’s student body clearly represents a diverse population. Located in the middle of the Columbia River Gorge, CGCC’s student body takes advantage of its enchanting surroundings, and the college provides students with many opportunities to participate in the area’s popular recreational activities. CGCC draws knowledge-seeking adventurers from all over the world to hike, sh, and windsurf while receiving an excellent education through the school’s diverse educational programs. CGCC also makes credit transfers easy: students who earn their associate degree at CGCC and wish to continue their education at a four-year school won’t need to start over at a new institution.
Students get ID cards for the rst time at CGCC For the rst time in its 40-year history, Columbia Gorge Community College is providing identication cards to its students. is is partly to strengthen a sense of community among the student body, as well as to improve the college's ability to quickly identify students.
e college's ID cards will identify the holder as a student and will identify the academic year. Since this is the rst year of issuance, 2017-18 will be printed on the card, with following academic years updated with a sticker. "e college would like to partner with local organizations and businesses in oering discounts to students who show their ID cards," explains Dan Spatz, the college's community outreach manager. "We believe this will complement the Chambers' work in encouraging people to shop locally, and also help our students as they balance oen-limited resources while attending college." Businesses which would like to participate are invited to contact the college. Dan can be reached at [email protected] by calling (541) 506-6034.
Columbia Bank Jumps to 11th Place on Forbes List of Best Banks 2018 On Jan. 10, 2018 Columbia Bank received its highest ranking on the Forbes annual list of America’s Best Banks. Columbia Bank received a rank of 11 on the annual list, far above other Northwest banks, and a signicant leap from the rank of 30 Columbia received in 2017.

2018 Distinguished Citizen Awards Winners
We all have the opportunity to volunteer in our community and I know many of you are volunteers for many organizations. is year's honorees have gone "above and beyond" without asking for recognition and they never think twice about doing a task. ey are the people, just like so many of you, that see what needs to be done and make it happen.
Webster's Dictionary denes these kinds of people, VOLUNTEERS:(NOUN) a person who voluntarily oers himself or herself for a service or
undertaking(VERB) to oer oneself for some service or undertaking
We are grateful to these people and are blessed by all that they do for our communities. Each year the Chamber receives nominations from members of the community for the Distinguished Citizens Awards. is year's banquet had the largest number of attendees, to date. We were honored to introduce newly appointed State Representative Daniel Bonham and State Senator Cli Bentz. We celebrated 135 years of e Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce, and we had the privilege to thank so many amazing people! We are excited to introduce to you our 2017 honorees ...
