Specialty Chemical industry is a knowledge driven industry which facilitates different
segment of the economy. Besides, there is immense potential for increasing
consumption within the country as also for India to become a reliable supplier of such
quality chemicals to the world.
It is estimated that the market size of specialty chemicals in India has the promise to
reach USD 70- 90 billion by 2021. India is poised for this growth today, given the rise of
the end user segments and both the government and industry's interest in
manufacturing. India has significant competitive advantage in the global market and
there is opportunity to leverage the cost efficient manufacturing and research strengths
to augment the Specialty Chemicals industry and possibly even become the export hub
for the world.
In the backdrop of Make in India campaign launched by the Honourable Prime Minister
of India Mr Narendra Modi, CHEMTECH organised the first edition of Specialty
Chemicals World Expo under the Chairmanship of Mr Vipul Shah, COO, Petrochemicals, th
Reliance Industries Ltd during 27 edition of flagship event in Mumbai, India. The
international exhibition and conference on the theme: Enhancing Competitive
Advantage of Specialty Chemical Industry in India had deliberations around the critical
issues that need to be addressed in order to provide a boost to the growth of the
domestic sector.
At the end of one day conference, Tata Strategic Management Group the knowledge
partners for the conference, came up with the White Paper titled: What Does it Take to
Make in India to be presented to the concerned government authorities.
ndCHEMTECH will organise the 2 edition of Specialty Chemicals World Expo during the
CHEMTECH World Expo 2017 scheduled from February 14-17, 2017 at Bombay thExhibition Centre, Goregaon (East), Mumbai, India. The 28 edition of flagship event will
bring the stalwarts, key decision makers, and technocrats from the entire value chain of
the chemical industry and allied services sectors along with the influencers and policy
makers from government authorities to the common point – CHEMTECH World Expo
2017.
International exhibition will allow the industry to showcase and see the latest technology
trends and the deliberations during the concurrent conferences will allow the end users
industry to MEET and INTERACT with the like-minded professionals and ENGAGE in
discussions that are of utmost relevance for the industry in the Indian context.

“From a decade ago, the scenario has changed both in terms of demand p a t t e r n a n d chemical output in India. As a result, v a l u e a d d e d specialty chemicals
have transitioned from being niche segment to growth drivers of the industry. While in the last few years, industrial growth has not been sailing smoothly - as we would have liked, but things are denitely upbeat and improving. More importantly, specialty chemical as a segment is playing pivotal role in the growth."
“ T h e m a r k e t i s c h a n g i n g a n d c o n s u m e r awareness is on the r i se , regulator y regime is maturing, and manufacturing innovation, varying p r i c e s a n d
a v a i l a b i l i t y o f r a w m a t e r i a l s , meanwhile are applying further pressure on competitive situation. Companies must replace the traditional strategies for competitive advantage to realise desired growth. I believe, as the Indian economy opens up and becomes crowded with Indian and international companies the market innovation for I nd i a i n I nd i a becomes a key differentiator."
“There are huge challenges that we face globally and in o u r c o u n t r y . Chemistry can be a b ig enab le r fo r addressing some of these challenges. In order to come up
with the solutions, there is a need to co-create as some of the challenges cannot be addressed by one individual or one company or one institution. Next 4 days are going to offer the platform for co-creation; the most important thing is the chemistry between all of us and with that we can create chemistries for sustainable solutions."
“A l l i n d u s t r i e s require specialty chemicals but end use r s a re more interested in the application than the chemicals. We need to work with specialty chemical
providers who understand that this class of chemicals are performance chemicals. We only need to distinguish between good chemicals and bad chemicals in a bid to reduce the chemo phobia in the minds of the end user. We need to focus on making good chemicals through the adoption of Green technology and lead better, healthier lives."
“The only way to ensure 'Make in India' achieves its goal is if you can integrate that with t h e a b i l i t y t o innovate, in India and for India. The challenge in India
today is that for specialty chemicals in India, there is not enough critical mass. The reason why we do not have any critical mass is that we have not been able to develop enough applications that touch millions of people that are at the bottom of the pyramid."
“As a r e su l t o f interacting with other companies in the last three years, I have made an i n t e r e s t i n g observation that we have hundred per cent FDI in
chemicals. But somehow it has not picked up to the extent all of us and the government had expected. There are still a lot of challenges and though India is a promising market, there are also a lot of difculties and it is complicated. The government is still taking steps to come up with ways and means to simplify this process."
"In the meetings r e g a r d i n g t h e 'Make in Ind ia ' campaign held at Delhi in December, out of the pointers listed for chemical industry under the s h o r t t e r m
initiatives, one was related to issuing feedstock mandate to all anchor units. One of the challenges in the cluster space is that if you have high value products then you need to verify if the freight component signicantly impacts the setup location and proceed accordingly."

“We welcome the 'Make in Ind ia ' i n i t i a t i v e t o encourage local production. What w e s e e i s encouraging and the optimism you can sense is an
important success factor in itself. While India has launched major steps to leverage its potential, the global chemical industry is facing disruptive changes that will impact the evolution in this country."
