CHEMTECH CONNECTS GLOBAL INDUSTRYWITH GUJARAT, ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENT

DESTINATIONS ON THE GLOBAL MAP

On its silver jubilee Chemtech took one step ahead and created yet another platform for the chemical process, pharmaceutical and allied industries and celebrated Gujarat Day to connect the global industry with the state of Gujarat which offered tremendous business potential. Shri. Saurabhbhai Patel, Minister for Industries and Power, State of Gujarat along with Mr. Arvind Agarwal, Vice Chairman & Managing Director Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), walked the audience through the slew of initiatives undertaken by the state to support industrial growth in the state.

They shared the major turnarounds in Gujarat under the leadership of Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat and the state having maintained the GDP growth of 11% over the past 5 years. They highlighted that Gujarat contributed 16% to India’s total industrial output, 51% to the chemical and 62% to the petrochemicals sectors in the country.

With its proper management, transparent policies and most importantly, support infrastructure the state has created a congenial environment to attract investments and is envisaging to become the energy hub for the country. The insightful presentations followed by the question and answer session provided the delegates an opportunity to interact

up their businesses in the state.

“The Planning Commission had given us the target of 11.2% growth, which Gujarat has achieved and maintained for the past 5 years. In the year 2002,

INR 2300 crore but with good governance and management the state

successful in addressing issues such as power shortage, land acquisition and water scarcity, which challenge the industrial growth in the country. The state has developed a strong infrastructure and industry friendly policy framework to attract the industry. Dahej has been rated amongst one of the top 20 investment destinations in the world and we aim to make each of the special investment regions and investment regions to reach the same level. We are the only state in India to have complete infrastructure to support the development of the chemical industry in India.”

“ Fo r t u n a t e l y for us the Government is also considering

of the subsidy scheme and

linking subsidies to the gas prices. The risk associated with the vagaries of pricing of the gas is going to be eliminated, which will be a good case for the fertilizer industry to invest into new projects.”

Mr. B. NarayanGroup President (Procurement & Projects), Reliance Industries Ltd

“EPC companies have not been so well-known for creating shareholder value and I think most EPC companies internationally itself have gone through sinusoidal phase. One of the biggest challenges for all of us in the EPC sector is to satisfy the customer

and our shareholders. This is going to be a very important part where all the elements of professionalism, business

and good systems need to be done.”

PROJECT EXECUTION - EVOLVING MODELS AND FORMATS

“One thing expected from the

in skill building; the other is may be players like us and we as an industry

building in this country.”

Mr. Ashok J GuptaCEO, Strategic Energy Technology Systems Pvt Ltd(TATA – SASOL Joint Venture)

“Many models may have cost implications like taxes and duties, which need to be estimated for EPC and LSTK projects from cost point of view and factored in the overall cost by the contractor.”

Mr. Rainer WittrienDirector, Commercial, UHDE – GmbH, Dortmund, Germany

“The Indian Government is talking about trillion dollar investment in infrastructure projects during the next

the country has a big appetite for investment from the private sector with no funding constraints.”

Mr. Russel WaughManaging Director, Leighton Contractors India Pvt Ltd

“I think there is a huge manpower capability in this country. If you look at what is being build overseas, particularly the Middle East, a huge amount of it has been built by Indian management and Indian labour. There is no reason why that same quality and

delivery can’t exist here in India. That is a question to the industry to opening up their mind and then allowing the capacity to build, and allowing this to happen in India”

PROJECT RISK MANAGEMENT

“EPC is a risky business and the companies involved in these have certain risk appetite but no space for any kind of foolhardiness. However, in India the line between the two is not very clear.”

Dr. S GaneshanGeneral Manager, Projects Operation Division,Toyo Engineering India Ltd

“The general approach is for EPC companies to form allies/ partnerships

the risks. They should align together across countries and should give stronger emphasis on cross - cultural coordination and different working

methods.”

Mr. Marco TominezProposal Manager, Tecnimont, Italy

“It is the planning, which is possibly one of the key enablers to reduce or mitigate some of the risks which we come across during execution of the projects. There is quantum of civil underground work over and above the piping work of which the complexities

have to be factored through the entire chain of project execution right from the bidding stage.”

Mr. Sandeep GroverHead Project Control, Larsen & Toubro – Hydrocarbon Mid & Downstream Projects, Baroda

“There has been an increase in tendencies to move risks to the EPCs in courses, in terms of covering protection losses, consolidated damages and third party liability. My plea would be, if you look at the system that everybody manages necessary issues at

their own risks.”

Mr. Wijnand A. J. MoonenDirector Global Downstream & Area Business Manager, Energy, South East Asia, Lloyds Register Asia.

“Internally, we believe, the way in which we manage our core values of safety health and environment has a lot to do with the performance. Safety should always be on the forefront of thinking process and not as an afterthought.”

PROCESS TECHNOLOGY A KEY ENABLER FOR MANUFACTURING LEADERSHIP

“When we talk about developing a new technology and taking from concept to commercialisation, the hurdles and the time it takes to commercialise depends on the stage of the industry. Whether it is new product, a new technology; or is it a mature industry or a mature

product or a new product coming out to replace the existing product. The stage makes a difference about how

Mr. Yogi SriramExecutive VP-HR & EnC, Larsen & Toubro Ltd

“There is wide spectrum of training and education. The most important part is where are the educators available in several different colleges and institutions? Even the most elite

attract talent to teach. Let alone the

percent positions are vacant.”

Prof. (Dr.) G D YadavDirector, ICT

“The recommendations for the EPC industry to attract young talent are to visit the engineering campuses, conduct guest work shops, launch professional

talents right from the second year of engineering studies, offer competitive

market salary and challenging work environment. This would help the industry develop business leaders.”

INTEGRATED PROJECT EXECUTION IN IT AS AN ENABLER

“One needs consolidation checks that the drawings and materials released for procurement at every stage of engineering are validated later to save time and cost. We require quality steps in three sectors such as standard engineering procedure, quality management system and the IT

concept.”

Mr. M V PrakashanSenior GM & HOD-IT, Uhde India Ltd

A STRONG CAPITAL GOODS AND CONSTRUCTIONSECTOR A KEY ENABLER

“India today is 12th largest economy in the world. If you see the actual GDP of the country, it is only USD 1.2 to 1.3 trillion. When you compare that with

the current growth rate it is expected that India would be the fourth largest economy by 2025.”

“What we have been doing today is collaborating with international partners as India is a global economy and the type of projects that are being carried out will require collaboration in many ways in terms of partnerships.”

Mr. K VenkataramananMember of the Board & President (Operations), Larsen & Toubro Ltd

“From the investment point of view, India has great potential in different sectors. Oil sector requires large investments as we continue to rely on imports. We produce 30 million tonnes of oil and our requirement is that of 150 million tonnes. In the

power sector we are going to invest 80 lakh crore to

and infrastructure are the key sectors for the future, all of which would provide immense opportunities for EPC industry.”

Mr. B Narayan, Group President (Procurement & Projects), Reliance Industries Ltd.

“Growth will continue mainly because we are a domestically demand driven economy and we are substantially insulated to what happens outside India. Challenges are increasing with the increasing the project sizes. They are becoming a lot more complex and because of that the quality of talent

facing the shortage of work force.”

Mr. Pothen PaulChairman & Country Head, Aker Powergas Pvt Ltd

“What we expect is that as the Indian economy grows, tremendous demand will come up and India will be under

the population. We believe that huge projects will come up in India similar to the Middle East and China.”

Dr. Benno LuekeManaging Director, Uhde India Pvt. Ltd.
