A Message from the Chairman

The year 2009 will not soon be forgotten. It’s being called the Great Recession. Regardless of how it is portrayed, Eaton and our employ-ees faced the year with resolve and sustained commitment to responding to community needs. Our skill at perceiving these needs—and then responding to them—has garnered us recognition both from our industry and the communities where we’re located.

Aligned with our vision of being the most admired company in our markets, Eaton’s contributions program focuses on keenly antici-pating, then responding to the needs of our communities. Without even being asked, we do. Our approach is not one size fits all because not all communities are alike. What Kearney, Nebraska, needs is different from what Valinhos, Brazil, needs. And the needs of both differ from those of Pune, India.

Around the world, Eaton people see, then respond with caring and enthusiasm. This is evident in their response to organizations such as United Way. As our employees give, we, as a company, then match their donations, by at least 50 cents on the dollar in North America alone. In 2009, matching employee pledges to United Way comprised 28 percent of our giving budget, ensuring that Eaton dollars are supporting marginalized communities and targeting solutions to the most urgent commu-nity health and human services problems. Solutions often also come in the form of Eaton employees who serve as community leaders, allocation committee volunteers, board mem-bers governing public charities, and proponents of community advocacy.

We’re also interested in the needs of educa-tional, arts, and cultural organizations. Our employee and retiree donations to these causes make up approximately 10 percent of Eaton’s giving budget. Eaton matches these contribu-tions dollar for dollar, ensuring that these foundational elements of philanthropy are supported and matched by company dollars too.

Not only do we contribute money, but we also roll up our sleeves and get to work: real, physi-cal work like landscaping, building, and serving meals. Our community involvement teams at plant locations around the world reflect the val-ues and philosophy that drive the entire Eaton Business System, engaging employees across a range of functions and management levels. The work they do accounts for the remaining 62 percent of our contributions budget.

After coming together, employee team mem-bers identify their “key communities” – the places they can see where Eaton funding will make the greatest impact. As a result of their insight, we support a vast array of activities, from donating library books to children in China in the aftermath of an earthquake; to feeding the needy at a city mission in New Zealand; providing technical training to teenagers at a school in a manufacturing plant in Brazil; and teaching students workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy through Junior Achievement programs.

Each year, it is our great privilege to honor seven outstanding employee volunteers with the Stover Volunteerism Award for Community Service. Named for a former Eaton Corporation Chairman, the Stover Award recognizes full-time Eaton employees who demonstrate high levels of leadership and/or service in commu-nity organizations and activities.

We see robust, healthy communities as a vital component of sustainability. Without strong communities, our world suffers. Eaton people care deeply about helping to keep the world strong. Our values-based culture reinforces that not only is this a shared but also a crucial responsibility.

On the following pages, you’ll see an overview of the names and locations of the organizations that received Eaton funding last year. We are proud to have worked with these groups, who themselves are working hard to make our com-munities better, and we are proud of our ability to respond to their needs with energy, enthusi-asm, talent, and financial support.
