Worthing High
School December 2015
Worthing High school has been selected as a Champion School recruited by the Youth Sport Trust. Get Set for Community Action is a brand new programme, which aims to strengthen relationships between young people and their local communities through the Olympic Values (friendship, excellence and respect) and the Paralympic Values (courage, determination, equality and inspiration).

This Girl Can
Thousands of students will work in teams across the UK, building relationships with local community groups to plan and deliver at least two projects each, in the run-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As a Champion school WHS will look to support 5 other schools to take part in the Get Set for Community Action programme, while also working with our own community partners.
Two students were lucky enough to attend the launch of the Get set for community action programme and meet two inspirational athletes: David Smith (Gold medal rower turned cy-clist) and Christian Malcolm (World, European and commonwealth medal-list) which was held at Aston Villa ground in Birmingham. During the day students worked through specific com-munity events and worked through skills that they will need as a Champi-on school, to plan projects. Worthing High school is looking for-ward to running several community action projects with its cluster schools in the New Year.
Students have been
promoting, running and keep fit at their
own Club after school. Deena and Jordan
have been the club promoters and with
Splashpoint Leisure Centre fitness instruc-
tors have helped run a number of fitness ses-
sions for girls at WHS. Further sessions have
been held at the lei-sure centre.

The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Schools in Eng-land are able to assess themselves across bronze, sil-ver and gold levels of the Mark. At WHS we are very proud to have achieved the Gold Mark this year. Head of PE Miss Field said we are al-ways striving to improve our PE provision across the school and increase both participation and competi-tion. This mark has given us a positive framework to work towards and we are delighted to have achieved it.

Well done to all Year 11 students who have completed courses in personal survival and mountain biking this term. Great fun and learning all at the same time!

Year 7 Football Tournament
Year 8 & 9 Football League
Girls football continues to thrive at Worthing High School, practices are well attended
and competition for the squads is high. Girls football is so popular at Worthing High that
we had two full teams this season. Although the girls came close to victories on two oc-
casions unfortunately we couldnt quite hold on in the later stages of the matches. Well
done to all the girls commitment, enthusiasm and determination, both at training and
during matches. We look forward to further development in the teams for next season.

All girls are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit through-out the season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all fixtures and I look forward to their continued commitment and team spirit for next season.

Boys Football
The Year 7 boys football team have certainly lots to be proud of this season; training has
been well attended with over 30 students every week and the positive work ethic
displayed on the training pitch has helped the boys put in some encouraging
performances on the playing field. A result of particular note is the 3-1 victory over a
strong and well organised Angmering side, all the boys displayed excellent character and
a wonder strike by Harry Margeson all helped the lads secure a deserved win. A very
positive first season boys, well done!

We have has 25 players training and playing for the Year 8 football squad this season.
The squad are really gelling together as a solid unit and we are confident that the bonds,
teamwork, resilience and determination shown throughout the squad will ensure that the
players will develop into exceptional players over the next few seasons. Captain of the
squad is Jack Foord and his leadership qualities are getting better each game. Harry
Cuthbert has been selected to join Brighton & Hove Albion Academy this season, but
were sure that if others players in the squad train hard then there will be opportunities
for others to join him there. Well done to the whole squad.

Year 9 Boys football team
The Y9 boys football team started the season in fine form with an exhilarating victory
over Chatsmore at home. With the bit between their teeth, they marched on against St.
Andrews and Steyning in the District East pool but on each occasion were outgunned by
a number of County level players who were also on the books at professional clubs. Alt-
hough the team pulled together in the face of adversity, it just wasnt enough to outfox
the opposition. The Y9 WHS team have a wealth of talent and were unlucky not to pro-
gress to the District semi-finals. However, with a good training regime, the boys can
come back strong next year and prove to all how good they can be. Well done to all who
played.

Year 11 Boys Football Team enjoy a good run in the County Cup
Following a strong performance in the District League during Y10, the boys football team
were entered into the U16 Sussex County Cup for the first time this year. After receiving
a bye in the first round, the Y11 boys played The Regis School in the second round on
the GOC astro. A small crowd watched the boys play some exquisite football and
dominate the game from the outset. A timely goal by Ben Redman and great defensive
work ensured the boys hung on for their first victory in the competition. Another home
draw in the third round against a strong St. Pauls side awaited the team and the boys
were ready for the challenge. After the first 40 minutes, the game was tied 0-0 although
Jake Swift hit the bar and a number of chances just missed the net. However, early in
the second half, a fortunate piece of luck handed St. Pauls their first goal and when they
bagged their second via the penalty spot, a place in the quarter finals looked unlikely for
the WHS boys. Another two spectacular individual goals from the St. Pauls midfield
condemned the Y11 boys to a 4-0 defeat. The boys should be very proud of their
performance and attitude on the football pitch; looking forward to the League games in
the New Year.
Squad includes: Jake Swift, Ollie Dengate, Ryan Porter, Ben Redman, Joe Birch, Daniel Jenkins, Maurizio Cardoso, Cam Blackburn, Naqib Chowdhury, Ben Colburn, Pierre Naylor, Harvey Langmaid and Ethan Pickering. Not pictured: Charlie Weelen and James Fricker.

Year 7 Basketball
Since putting in a great performance in the Year 7 Basketball Tournament group stages; wining 1, drawing 1 and losing 1, the Year 7 boys have been forever waiting on the bench. Unfortunately, through no fault of their own, the boys are still yet to open their account in the district league. All three of their first league games, due to be played this side of Christmas, have been postponed as a result of the opposition schools losing their facilities due to the Year 11 mock exam season. However, this has not dampened the boys resolve; Friday KS3 Basketball club remains well attended by the lads and they are keen to stamp their mark on the Year 7 league once it recommences after the Christmas break. Squad includes: Preston Wheatley Dieter Forster Ethan Clarke Tomasz Utczinski Archie Cairns Harry Margeson Jude Anderson Josh Mant Aiden Lacey Jack Burton Alfie Brown
Boys Basketball
Year 11 Boys Basketball
The Year 11 basketball team have been training hard every week and attended the Year 11 tournament at the end of November. In a hard fought tournament with an abun-dance of talent on show, particularly from players in the WHS squad, the team held their own against tough opposition. The most dramatic game was against Durrington where the teams could not be separated in regulation time so the match went to overtime. Overtime still wasn't enough so in a rare situation the game went into double over time with Durrington scoring a basket in the last 10 seconds of the game! Player of the tour-nament was Luke Moore but a special mention goes to Jake Mepson-Richardson who has been coaching the KS3 teams. Well done to the whole squad.

The Y9 boys basketball were invited to the District Tournament at SRWA two weeks ago along with all of the Y9 teams from the local area. The teams were split into two pools and played a round robin format with the top two sides going through to a semi-final. With a mixture of experienced players and novice players, WHS played a unique style that threatened the opposition basket on a number of occasions. The boys were introduced to some fierce competition and enjoyed the experience throughout the afternoon. Since the tournament, the boys have travelled to TLA with a number of new faces and enjoyed a close encounter with a Littlehampton side who had a depth of tal-ent. Although ending as runners-up, the boys now look forward to the challenge of Steyning and SRWA in the next few weeks. Well done to all those who play in the team.

The U13 girls have done themselves proud this season. Playing in the district league, the team has fought and battled with the best of them, competing and attacking every ball. As the girls gained more experience and match play it was clear to see both teams work-ing together to produce some lovely netball. All girls are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit throughout the season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all fixtures and I look forward to their continued commitment and team spirit for next season and their tournament.

A relatively short sea-son amidst regular Monday practices. This year we were entered into the Thursday Pool of the District League, with home and away fix-tures. The girls faced both Davison and Si-on in their first games. Although they recorded a defeat to both schools, the team did match Sion for quality and good team play. A mixed season of results, however great deter-mination and commit-ment throughout.

Crackit
A number of students from year 7 and 8 were selected to take part in a 6 week project called Crackit! The aim of the project was to link Design and Technology and Sport in an interesting way. The students who were selected had shown a flair in Graphics this term and were perhaps not that interested in sport.
Each week 1 hour was spent playing Cricket with Sussex County cricket coaches and the other hour designing characters relat-ed to Cricket to put onto a cricket bat, ball and T shirt. An outside design agency has delivered the content for this along with the help of Mrs Allibone and Mr Walker. Students are cur-rently developing their characters ready for print-ing. We look forward to seeing the end results.

Championships on the 2nd December at Lancing Manor; third overall. Notable perfor-
mances by Jack Hall (Year 9) coming 6th in the junior boys race, Kavanagh Thornton and
Luke Moore (Year 11) who came 8th and 9th respectively in the intermediate boys race.
For the girls; Aimee Connelly (Year 7) came 16th in the girls year 7 race, Sophia
Scheltinga Koopman (Year 8) finished 13th in the girls junior race and Sarah Seacombe

The year 11 students performed there current dance piece, Suspects Disclose which is a dance based on the Cluedo board game. The students showed professionalism throughout the whole evening supporting the other
performers from Worthing College and Davison. It was a fantastic evening and all stu-
dents should be very proud of their performance.

Worthing High School student Ben Colburn sealed his augural Junior Saloon Car Championship crown with a comfortable 2nd and 4th place at Pembrey Circuit on the weekend of 10-11 October. This was his first ever season in the Championship racing for Westbourne Motorsport which makes his victory even sweeter. Ben came into the weekend with a 13 point lead over title rival Brad Hutchinson and he was determined to secure the victory in the final weekend of the season. He qualified a modest 4th for both races; unusual as he had started on the front row for every race until Pembrey. In race 1 Colburn got off to a good start and was able to hold his position in 4th. Coming onto lap 3, Colburn had gained some good momentum on the two cars ahead of him he managed to get to the end of the straight alongside the two, making a three a breast manoeuvre into turn one. Colburn managed to stay in 2nd for the rest of the race, giving him a better advantage of winning the championship for race two. In race two, Colburn's start wasn't as good as he dropped to fifth by the first corner, only to regain the place later on in the lap. Colburn then got clear and decided to stay in his position as he knew it was enough to complete the title victory. Ben said "It's been a great season for myself and my team Westbourne Motorsport winning the championship this year! I'd like to say a huge thank you to the whole team for providing a great car and especially to my parents and brother James for their great support".

Sports Leaders and Sports Prefects lead by example
The PE department led a recruitment drive in September to appoint fresh Sports Leaders
to the existing team to further enhance PE and Sport at Worthing High School. The
successful applicants will be given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills with-
in sport and have already got their teeth stuck in to a number of activities over this last
term. Most notably was the Year 1-2 Multi-Skills afternoon where 12 Primary schools
spent two hours in the sportshall playing a host of sporting activities, led by the WHS
Sports Leaders and Sports Prefects. It was a fabulous afternoon and thoroughly
enjoyed by all. As well as weekly duties and half termly meetings, the Sports Leaders
are now looking forward to participating in a Street Ambassador Cricket Leaders award
on Thursday 17th December led by a qualified coach from Sussex CCC. Well done to all
the team and keep up the good work!
