three housesFrancois Pecard’s gloriously positioned three houses skillfully integrate architecture and landscape. The houses unfold interestingly, playing spectacular framed views against enclosed vistas, but without ever sacrificing the straightforwardness of the interior layouts, which provide everything that is required for holidaying on an island such as St. Barth’s.
I love the variety of room heights, which show that Francois is a man with European background who has a very good knowledge of the local history and weather. The choice of materials is also clever and always feels appropriate – I particularly like the Brazilian hardwood, which weathers to the colour of the local rock and the cedar roof tiles which will go silver over time. I wouldn’t change a detail of the house. The generosity and sensitivity of the man is very much reflected in the work.

un motImplantée au bord d’une falaise dominant l’océan atlantique et les îles voisines, cette résidence particulière s’intègre dans le site naturel au panorama exceptionnel tout en affirmant une architecture volontaire forte de matières, de symboles et de références.
Aboutissement d’un long travail sur l’architecture de St.Barthélemy et ses cases anciennes de la côte au vent, il aura fallu pas moins de trente ans pour que les références à cet habitat typique de l’île aujourd’hui disparu inspirent ce qui est devenu le style dominant de l’architecture contemporaine de St.Barth.
Rien n’aurait été possible sans la confiance et la complicité de clients courageux et visionnaires qui ont osé prendre le risque de rompre avec les tendances du moment.
Enfin, si l’architecte est le chef d’orchestre d’une réalisation, encore faut-il de bons musiciens pour que la musique soit harmonieuse et sonne juste.

Set on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring islands, this residence discretely blends into the site’s exceptional panorama all the while displaying its bold architecture founded on raw materials, symbols and references.
After over 30 years of dedication to the islands architecture and it’s authentic dwellings on the windy coast, we begin to see that the reference to this typical habitat has now become the predominant style of contemporary architecture of St. Barth.
Nothing would have been possible without the trust and the understanding of courageous and visionary clients who dared to take the risk and break away from the usual trends.
Finally, if the architect is the director of the orchestra, gifted musicians must be present for the music to be harmonious and have the perfect sound.

L’effet «miroir» du grand bassin de nage permet de gommer le bord de crête de la falaise rendant la vue encore plus spectaculaire et le ciel plus présent.
The large swimming pool’s «mirror» effect hides the cliff’s edge giving way to an even more spectacular view and a larger part of sky.
Partout le jeu des transparences et des reflets contribue à la légèreté de l’ensemble.
Transparent clarity and reflections add to the light and airy atmosphere.
L’approche de la maison a été conçue de manière à réserver au dernier moment la surprise et l’émotion de la découverte de la vue spectaculaire lors du franchissement du porche d’entrée.
The villa entrance was designed to keep the surprise and emotion in the discovery of the spectacular view with one’s passage through the entrance porch.
Equilibre entre force et légèreté. Le poids de la structure avec ses grosses colonnes en béton armé est allégé par les transparences bien utiles à la ventilation naturelle et aux perspectives visuelles spectaculaires.
Balance between strength and lightness… The weighty aspect due to the large concrete columns is alleviated by the transparent areas used for the natural ventilation and breathtaking views.
Toutes les pièces de vie sont largement ouvertes sur l’extérieur laissant pénétrer avantageusement la lumière et les Alizés.
All the living areas are largely open to the outdoors enabling the daylight and Trade winds to gently permeate the house.
Sols en béton ciré, meubles en chêne clair, cuisine italienne en verre laqué blanc, poteaux et murs en béton recouverts d’enduit blanc, charpentes en bois blanchi, tissus clairs, tous les matériaux contribuent à la luminosité et la sobriété des lieux.
Waxed concrete floors, light oak furniture, a white-lacquered Italian glass kitchen, concrete posts and walls rendered white, whitened wood framework and light-colored fabrics all lend to the light and the sober nature of the premises.
L’ameublement conçu par Catherine PAWSON, fait à partir de belles matières, se veut simple, presque monacal, par respect pour l’architecture dominante.
Catherine PAWSON’s choice of furniture made of exquisite materials and meant to be simple, almost monastic, respecting the predominating architectural style.
Conçue pour résister aux séismes et aux cyclones, la maison, très ouverte peut être transformée rapidement en abri sûr grâce aux solides volets coulissants.
The villa was constructed to resist possible earthquakes and hurricanes and, while the villa maintains an open and transparent feel, it can be quickly transformed into a safe haven thanks to the solid sliding shutters.
Ces kiosques ont été conçus à partir des proportions du rectangle d’or. Leur répétition permet d’obtenir l’effet monumental recherché tout en respectant l’échelle des bâtiments traditionnels de l’île.
These kiosks have been designed based on the golden ratio proportions. Their repetition results in the sought monumental effect whilst respecting the scale of traditional island buildings.
Comme une plage au bord de l’eau, le grand deck en IPE blanchi offre un espace de vie au soleil ou sous les palmiers.
Like a sandy beach adjoining the sea, the large deck in bleached exotic hardwood offers a living space for basking in the sun or relaxing under the palms.
Résolument minérale, l’architecture dialogue avec la nature qu’elle laisse pénétrer abondamment et avec laquelle elle semble jouer à cache-cache.
The profoundly mineral architecture murmurs with nature enabling it to easily invade the premises, apparent-ly playing a game of hide and seek.
La grande coursive dessert à ses deux extrémités des espaces intimes dédiés au repos ou à la remise en forme.
Intimate spaces dedicated to relaxation or fitness occupy the two extremities of the large veranda.
Perspectives, fuyantes, reflets dans l’eau, autant d’effets utilisés presque à l’excès pour augmenter l’impression d’espace, de générosité et stimuler les émotions.
Vanishing views, reflections in the water, these effects used to an extreme increase the impression of space, generosity and intensify emotions.
Exigence des propriétaires et détail bien pratique, la transition entre les decks extérieurs et les chapes de béton ciré intérieures, se fait sans marche, ni différence de niveau.
The client’s insistance for a practical detail, the transition between the exterior decks and the waxed concrete floors are without a step adjoining the two on one level.
Les quatre suites, systématiquement répétées comme les cellules d’un monastère, offrent tout le confort et le raffinement moderne dans un style dépouillé où les matériaux naturels dominent.
The four suites, repetitive like monastery cells, offer all the modern comfort and refinement in a simple style dominated by raw materials.
Les grandes douches vitrées laissent entrer la lumière des patios privés au cœur des salles d’eau.
The large glass shower doors allow natural light to enter from the private patio situated at the heart of each bathroom.
Le bassin de nage de vingt cinq mètres en pierre de lave permet par sa couleur et sa matière à la fois de chauffer l’eau
et d’obtenir l’effet miroir si spectaculaire.
Through its color and matter, the twenty-five meter long, lava stone swimming pool produces an astounding mirror effect.
Le grand axe de circulation Nord Sud, fonctionnel et hautement symbolique, dessert toutes les pièces de la maison à l’abri de la pluie et des Alizés, mais constitue aussi une perspective résolument monumentale.
The great North-South practical and highly symbolic circulation route, shelters all the rooms of the house from the rain and the Trade Winds, while creating an absolutely monumental perspective.
Le soir venu, les reflets dans l’eau de l’éclairage architectural confèrent un air de fête, à la manière d’un petit port méditerranéen.
As night falls, the architectural lighting reflections on the water add a festive ambiance reminding us of a small port in the Mediterranean.
Les routes et les parkings en pavés de granit ajoutent à l’aspect accueillant et raffiné de l’entrée. Situés sur un niveau inférieur, ils se font discrets de l’intérieur.
The granite roads and parking areas add to the natural and refined feel of the entrance. Located on a lower level, they are almost unseen from indoors.
La nature aride du terrain aux roches calcaires écharpées par l’érosion a été préservée lors de la création du jardin sec par Denys RIDRIMONT grâce à l’apport d’arbres et de plantes désertiques aux essences rares disposées entre les roches affleurantes.
Thanks to the supply of rare species of desert trees and plants set amongst the outcropping rocks, the arid nature of the land with its limestone rocks ragged by erosion was preserved during the dry garden’s creation by landscape architect, Denys RIDRIMONT.
Cette grande maison faite de petits volumes à l’échelle des cases traditionnelles de St.Barth de plain pied avec le site semble avoir toujours fait partie du paysage dans lequel elle s’inscrit harmonieusement.
Made up of small volumes based on the traditional scale of St Barth houses, this large villa seems to have always been part of the landscape.
