What do we KNOW: • 75 disparate, competitive PICUs can work together to
reduce CLA-BSI • 75 PICUs can share data, even w CMS breathing on us • Central Line maintenance care matters • Higher compliance with the central line bundle elements
is associated with lower CLA-BSI rates
• Reduced CLA-BSI rates saves $$ to the healthcare system

Important Study Findings
• Risk of CLA-BSI doubles after 7 days dwell time
• Compared to patients with respiratory illness – CLA-BSI risk highest in patients w GI and oncologic diagnoses
• Among all patients, including those w > 1 central line, the CLA-BSI risk is lower in those w central line inserted in jugular vein

Pediatric Cri+cal Care Medicine
State of the Journal
February 6, 2012 Pediatric SecUon Business MeeUng
SCCM Congress
Patrick M. Kochanek, MD Editor
IntroducUon
I am again honored to report on the status of Pediatric Cri+cal Care Medicine
PCCM just completed its 12th year of publicaUon
The most important developments in 2011 1. A further increase in (2010) IF reaching 2.672 2. A spectacular immediacy index among pediatric journals 3. A rapidly rising number of citaUons of arUcles published
in the journal –PCCM has been cited over 4000 Umes 4. PublicaUon of three outstanding supplements—two in
2011, and one in Jan 2012 5. ConUnued growth and re-‐tooling of the journal
ISI/Impact Factor
PCCM received its third impact factor (2010) in June of 2011 along with the related citaUon indices
1. The 2010 IF = citaUons in ISI-‐indexed journals in 2010 of arUcles published in our journal in 2008 and 2009 ÷ number of arUcles we published in 2008 and 2009.
2. Despite only its third impact factor, PCCM was 14th out of 109 pediatric journals, and 9th out of 23 criUcal care journals.
3. This is an outstanding IF—parUcularly for a pediatric journal.
Pediatric Journals Remarkably,
IF #14 out of 109 improved from #18 last year Our 3rd IF
Pediatric InfecUous Disease 3.06
Pediatric CriUcal Care Medicine 2.67
Pediatric Pulmonology 2.24
Pediatric Nephrology 2.18
Pediatric Neurology 1.51
Pediatric Cardiology 1.24
Pediatric Emergency Care 0.80
Some relevant Pediatric Specialty Journals: 2010 IFs Pediatrics 5.85
Journal of Pediatrics 4.19 Pediatric Research 2.87 Pediatric CriUcal Care Medicine 2.67
Top General Pediatric Journals: 2010 IFs
PCCM Immediacy Index Comparison to top general pediatric journals
PCCM received an immediacy index of 1.272 which was amazingly #3 out of the 109 pediatric journals and #6 out
of 22 criUcal care journals
Our 2010 immediacy index = The number of citaUons in ISI-‐indexed journals in 2010 of
arUcles published in PCCM in 2010 ÷ the total number of arUcles published in PCCM in 2010
—and thus represents an index of rapid citaUon
Pediatric Journals #3 out of 109 for immediacy index Improved from #7 in 2009
PCCM had a higher immediacy index than Pediatrics and J Peds

Strategies to reduce Ume to print
• 200 addiUonal e-‐pages in Nov 2011 issue • Plan to progressively move to monthly publicaUon
• 9 issues in 2013 • Monthly in 2016—maybe sooner
On-‐line only publicaUon – In 2011, 434 e-‐pages; 700 print pages – Clinical studies, Brief and Laboratory reports – AddiUonal categories may move to e-‐only – UlUmately, PCCM an e-‐journal?
Figure 11. Subscription Rates for Pediatric Journals
We certainly warrant monthly publicaUon and we are working as a team to achieve that
goal
And PCCM is the best deal in the print publicaUon universe!
