Knowing Myself:

Keirsey Quiz:After taking the Keirsey quiz, my results were that I have an Artisan Composer

(ISFP) personality. According to this personality type, I am more emotional and act

upon my feelings not my thoughts. We also have a strong set of values and strive to

meet sometime in our lives. We live based on our five senses and have a strong

appreciation for art. I agree with this because I am the type of person to listen to my

heart rather than my head. I am also very emotional and sensitive as well as

sympathetic. I do have a more appreciation for subjects like art or creativity rather

than analytical subjects. Sometimes I do have my head in the clouds rather than

being focused on a certain thing but I also can be very practical and realistic as well.

Leadership Style Survey

After taking the leadership style quiz, I fell under the Laissez Faire leadership style. I

like to just provide instructions and let my group do whatever their wish and have

their own time as long as they are following instructions. They are allowed to be

free and creative as long as it follows the guidelines. They can come to me whenever

for guidance but I prefer to work quietly to myself while everyone else works as

well this way I can focus. Also if people are capable of working on their high, more

amount of work can be completed.

Learning About Tutoring:

PRE-PLACEMENT SURVEY

Note these details about your placement before Pre-Placement Day:

• Placement teacher -- __Mrs., Quatermain__________________________• Course tutored -- Grade 9 Business (BTT101)• Room number -- __514 Period -- ________2___________• Textbook(s) -- ___________N/A_____________________________

While you are in your placement class, please try to take notes about the following items / issues:

• What are some of the rules and routines of the placement class that you notice? For example, what behaviors are acceptable or unacceptable? How is the class time structured? What rules, if any, are posted? Do students know the routine?

No cell phones, food or drink. When the teacher is teaching a lesson monitors must be off.

• On a separate sheet of paper, jot down, to the best of your ability, the seating plan of this class. (If students do not use desks in this class, make note of any informal groupings that you see. For example, what “cliques” exist? Do students report to squads, teams, or learning groups?)

The seating plan changes every week or two so no there are no cliques because everyone gets a chance to talk to each other.

• What is the tone of the classroom? Do people seem happy to be there, or do they seem to be dissatisfied with the way things are going? How can you tell? Sum the tone of the room up in one or two words. What can you do to improve or maintain the tone of this class?

The tone is very happy because the teacher always likes to make jokes or show funny videos of the day. Everyone is comfortable with each other and with the teacher.

• How would you describe your placement teacher’s teaching and leadership style? Support your opinion by referring to exchanges, and observations you make while visiting. How does this style compare with your own?

I think she has a great teaching style because she really connects with the students and tries to make her lessons interactive and fun with her videos of the day and her funny examples. It somewhat compares to my own because I also like to connect with my students but I’m not as enthusiastic as her.

5

Page 7: Peer Helping Portfolio 2014 - Ankita Oberoi

• What is your role in this class? Try to consult briefly with your placement teacher about his/her expectations of you. (This may be best done after class is over.) Try to determine how much of the following s/he wants you to do:

• Administrative tasks like attendance, checking admit slips, checking homework completion, writing agendas on the board, preparing A/V equipment, catching students up on missed work, checking uniforms, and erasing boards

• Reading and doing the class’ homework• Taking notes while s/he is teaching for use in a “model notebook”• Circulating while s/he is teaching to keep students focused• Circulating while students are working to help them • One-on-one tutoring of students who are struggling• Working with small groups of students• Correcting homework at the front of the room• Doing sample assignments for students as an example to be emulated• Creating and marking objective quizzes and assignments • Creating and teaching mini-lessons (minimum one per term)• Meeting with him/her regularly about upcoming projects and student

concerns• Other: _________________________________________________

Most teachers appreciate a tutor who sees what needs to be done and does it. A few, however, would prefer that the tutor ask permission before acting. Which type of teacher is your placement teacher?

My teacher prefers that I ask her and consult with her before I make any big plans or lessons for the class.

• Consider the students in the class. What do you notice about the way they interact with each other, the teacher, and you? Which students stand out for you and why? Do you anticipate problems with any of the students? Why?

The students generally talk with everyone and are very comfortable around their peers and the teacher. The only few who stick out are the ones who talk a lot and interrupt the teacher.

• What fears, concerns, or misgivings do you have about tutoring in this subject area, in this environment, with this group of students, and/or with this teacher? Are you prepared to return to this placement and give it your full effort?

I’m afraid that since I took this course a while ago I might forget some of the concepts and I wont be able to help the students and since I had a different teacher, a few of the material is different to what I learned.

Confidentially, Trust, & Rapport

Character -- Who are you?

I possess the following five attributes related to my tutoring assignment:

• A good listener• Reliable• Helpful• Friendly• Knowledgeable

I will prove to my tutees and my placement teacher that I possess these attributes by:

• Repeating what they tell me back to them but in different form.• Doing what is asked of me on time.• Always willing to help with questions and take initiative.• Present myself as approachable and friendly.• Knowing the topic inside and out when being asked about it.

I need to work more on the following three areas related to my tutoring assignment:

• Being less quiet and passive• Finding more things to assist with• Being less shy and teaching more

lessons

I will prove to my tutees and my placement teacher that I am a person of good character by working on these three areas in the following ways:

• Talking more to the students and develop more of a connection with them.

• Keeping asking if students or teacher needs help with anything• Try to teach more lessons and become comfortable with the

class.

Competence -- What do you know and what can you do?

I possess the following five skills or pieces of knowledge related to my tutoring assignment:

• Enjoy being with children• Have an interest in my peer helping topic• Organized• Patient• Empathy

I will prove to my tutees and my placement teacher that I possess these skills and knowledge by:

• Connecting with my students as their peer, not a teacher.• Know what I am talking about when it comes to business/

technology• Have worksheets and lesson plans ready to go• Work with children and show them its okay to take their time• Not be too harsh without a reason.

I need to work more on the following three skills or areas of knowledge related to my tutoring assignment:

• Confidence• Understand they learn differently• Be enthusiastic

I will prove to my tutees and my placement teacher that I am competent by working on these three skills or areas in the following ways:

• Becoming more comfortable with the class• Recognizing its okay to learn at different paces• Speak louder and break out of my quiet shell.

Building Rapport – What do you do to get to know others better?

I want to know the following three things about each of my tutees:

• How comfortable they are with me as their peer helper.

• How well they understand the knowledge in the course

• How often they wish for me to teach lessons.

I will find this information out by doing the following:

• Relating to them and act as their friend.• Notice how well they do on assignments and tests.• Notice they response after I do teach a lesson.

I want my tutees and teacher to know the following three things about me:

• That I do work hard in the class and I do try my best

• That I’m not trying to make it look like I slack off.

• I love the class and working with the students.

I will convey this information to my teacher and tutees by:

• Handing in assignments or tasks on time• Acting just like the students with the same privileges they have.• By thanking them for the opportunity.

Mid-Term Evaluation: After receiving an 80% as a peer helper, I feel like I could have done better,

but also I am content with my grade. In the class there isn’t much to do other than

answer the students question and working with them one on one. Some of the

students are more comfortable asking the teacher rather than me. I enjoy marking

and handing sheets out, anything I can do to assist the teacher. I wish I took more

initiative in teaching lessons and connecting with the students as a peer level rather

than a teacher.

Thoughts On Online Learning:Peer helping has been my first course that has been done majority online. I found

that this could be very helpful, but not for me. Personally I prefer having hardcopies and

being in a classroom and learning because I did find this site a bit hard for me to

navigate. But regardless it did have its advantages. For example, I loved that I could

complete the work at home and it was not an actual class and that I had till 11:59pm to

submit. This was like an extra day and was very useful for me. I also enjoyed that all the

files were online and easy to obtain and download so if I did happen to miss a day I

would not fall behind. But again I prefer if I had print out of assignments and lessons

because I can grasp the knowledge better and get a better understanding. Overall a great

experience and hopefully I can get used to more online courses since this is becoming a

more popular trend when it comes to classes.

Effectiveness Survey Results

After conducting a survey for my grade nine-business class, the following information was collected from the surveys. I asked a total of ten questions, the last one asking for additional feedback. Figure 1.1 portrays the class average in a pie graph. The class average is important because according to the graph, most students have a 90+ average, which means the student’s have much knowledge in the course and do no require as much of my help compared to student’s who have lower averages in the course. Also, according to my data, 74% of students find that I can answer their questions most times. In order to be able to answer a student’s question each time, I am going learn the lesson before the day it will be taught so I have a better knowledge on what I would be answering and hopefully be more helpful for the students. (Figure 1.2). In order to improve as a peer tutor, I would also teach lessons more frequently. According to the students, 56% prefer if I teach a lesson once a week. This way the class can get more comfortable with me and I can improve on my presentation skills. (Figure 1.3). Another question I asked was how helpful would it be fore students if I offered tutoring in which 39% rated 4 on a scale from 1-5 with 1 being unnecessary, and 5 being very helpful. I personally would like to offer tutoring services but since it is a business course, it is not very needed but in the future if students would appreciate that, then I could assist them to improve as a peer tutor. I could conduct the survey again, I would change some of the questions so they would not all be similar and each question was different. I found that I was asking similar questions, which provided me the same information.

Learning Barriers Reflection:a) What are mental health issues? Things like depression, anxiety, and bipolar

disorder are included in this barrier. These can be common if one goes through a traumatic event or could even have a chemical imbalance.

b) Each disorder is different which means they have different symptoms. To give a general idea, the following symptoms should be recognized if one is going through a mental health issue; feeling of fatigue and lack of energy, irritability, over eating or appetite loss, constantly feeling anxious and if symptoms are serious, then even thoughts or attempts of suicide can occur.

c) The behaviors these mental issues can cause are constantly feeling down or depressed. For example, one who used to be very involved in extra curricular may feel like not taking part in any school activities. They could also be indulging in drug or alcohol abuse to ease their pain. For example, if one is skipping school or blowing off their priorities to go home and drink or get involved with drugs, this may be because it helps them cope and relives the pain for a temporary amount of time.

d) To help students who have mental illnesses over come their issue, Dunbarton has a variety of resources. They have guidance counselors who are there to help at any time. Also once a week Durham youth counselors come to the school and provide their services to anyone who is need. Also there are websites and recourses in the guidance office that students can contact if needed.

10 Ways Men and Women Communicate Differently:

This article discusses how men and women communicate differently. It uses an example of a man and a woman taking a drive. The man is silent while all the woman wants to do is talk. According to the article, women are more discussion-oriented and communicate by such things like gossip, advice, problems, etc. and this is how they build relationships where as men are more focuses on activities and are action-orientated. These are common tendencies on men and women which may make it difficult for men and woman to communicate together.

I agree with this article because even with my friend, I usually want to always talk and get irritated if we’re sitting in silence while he barely talks and I feel like I have to force it out of him. He can be really quiet but he’s just comfortable. Just like in the scenario in the article, that is exactly what happens to us too regardless of who is driving. He is always focused on driving and doesn’t say a word and I feel like I’m always the one forcing a conversation.

Controversy Plagues School Mental Health Screening

This article is about a student who faced personal hardship when his father was

diagnosed with cancer, which caused him to act out as in skip school, punching holes in

the walls, yelling at teachers, etc. The issue was that students do not seek help when they

have a mental illness, which only make the situation worse. Schools are now opening

treatment centers for students who wish to seek help like this particular student who

finally gave in and is now a part of a counseling group. It is also a shame that only some

schools offer these screenings while each school should be. But if these treatments are

offered everywhere, some worry that they might over-diagnose students and give them a

life long label of having a mental disorder when in fact it could just be a phase.

I agree that there should be a mental health clinic open at the 15 year olds School

because just like other students, it is convenient and private and no fear of being judged.

Students also get to meet other students who are going through the same thing and can relate. It

should be placed in every school in my opinion because mental illnesses are much more of a

serious problem and can affect teenagers in the long run. This would create a barrier because

when one has a mental illness, depending on what it is, most likely they cannot focus. School

will be their last priority and affect their studies drastically. These treatments will help students

and make them not feel alone. Speaking from personal experience, it helped a bit even for me. I

would want my tutees to seek help if necessary and not leave it off till it gets worse.

Future Research and Development:

Reflection On Samsung Curved Screens

I enjoyed the topic I chose for my research project because it is something I have

an interest in and I do believe it can benefit society in education, business, and in a

societal perspective. I learned that only two companies have this technology and that it is

even possible for a curved screen to exist. I also found that the new inventions it could

lead to, to be very interesting like the smart watch because that would be very helpful and

useful for people and I know I would purchase it I had the chance. I also enjoyed

formatting the project into a news article because I got to be creative as a journalist an

usually projects are more like reports or power points so this was a unique way to display

my project.

Conflict Resolution Responses

Assignment #2- DiscussionLawyer:

Duties- some tasks that a lawyer has is to advice clients of their legal rights, represent clients in court, create legal documents, research information about cases and regulations. This relates to conflict resolution because at the end of the day their goal is to help their client resolve a conflict and make sure their client gets justice.

Education- To become a lawyer, you must attend a law school but before that you must complete 2 years of undergraduate studies at a university but it usually takes 4 years to complete and a degree in any subject is acceptable. You also need you complete your LSLAT’S. Law school usually takes 3 years to complete and you receive your bachelor of Laws.

Communication Skills- Someone in this field needs to be persuasive and not shy. They need to be confident and portray the facts correctly. They also need to be good with people because in this career they are going to be dealing with a lot of clients.

Sample Career Path- First after law school they would start as an articling student and then work their way up to associate lawyers. After 5-8 years then they can be a partner.

Is This Occupation For Me? - I feel like this would suit me because I am interested in law and I love learning about the cases, but also I feel like this would be a boring, straight forward career for me and in that case it would not suit me.

Contributing to Society- It would allow me to contribute to society because I would be fighting for people to get what they deserve and get their justice.
