Change of Head of Group!

There has been a change to the Head of PEMC Group! After fourteen years, Professor Jon Clare

stepped down as Head of Group and took on the challenging new role of Head of Department

(Electrical and Electronic Engineering). The Group was sad to see Jon leave as Head of Group, but

delighted for his new position as Head of Dept. We're very grateful to Jon for his leadership and hard

work over the years, during which time the PEMC Group expanded hugely. Fortunately, his new

office is just down the corridor from many PEMC academics, and he will continue to be an active

member of the group.

We're also pleased to announce that the new Head of Group for PEMC is Professor Pat Wheeler. Pat

steps down as Head of Department to fill this role and, as a long-standing member of PEMC, will do a

great job of leading PEMC's research.

New Roles

We are very pleased to share the news about the following change of roles for PEMC academics:

• Professor Chris Gerada becomes the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Industrial Strategy,

Business Engagement and Impact. Chris takes on this role alongside his position as Professor

of Electrical Machines, and the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair of Electrical Machines.

• Professor Serhiy Bozhko becomes the Director of the Institute for Aerospace Technology.

Serhiy takes on this role alongside his position as Professor in Aircraft Electric Power

Systems.

• Dr Michael Galea was awarded the status of Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

New Academic Aerospace Consortium

The University of Nottingham is delighted to be a founding member of NARC - the National

Aerospace Research Consortium - which draws together top aerospace research Universities, and

will consolidate the UK's position within the aerospace sector.

Professor Chris Gerada, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Industrial Strategy, Business Engagement

and Impact, and member of the PEMC Group will be heavily involved in the development of NARC.

University of Nottingham - Chile

July 2018 saw the formal launch of the University of Nottingham – Chile, a University of Nottingham

owned Foundation in Chile. The Foundation will enable the University to expand its research and

influence in Chile and across the wider region.

Power Electronics Machines and Drives Conference 2020 (PEMD 2020)

We are delighted to announce that the University of Nottingham has been selected as the venue for

the prestigious PEMD 2020 Conference, with Dr Tom Cox acting as Chairman. Around 600 delegates,

specialising in power electronics, machines and drives, are expected to join us in Nottingham at this

event, which will be held at the East Midlands Conference Centre.

New PEMC Representative

After a successful year acting as the PEMC Rep, Konstantina Panagiotou stepped aside and we're

pleased to announce that Stewart Marchant has now taken on that role.

PEMC Colleagues in China

The PEMC Group is very fortunate to have valued colleagues spread across two campuses. PEMC

Members working on the University of Nottingham Ningo Campus (UNNC) regularly visit the PEMC

Group based in Nottingham, and vice versa.

We're delighted to share news and activities from PEMC China:

Key Laboratory of More Electric Aircraft Technology of Zhejiang Province

The PEMC China group was recently awarded the highly prestigious status of Key Laboratory of More

Electric Aircraft Technology of Zhejiang Province. Key Lab status recognises a group's reputation,

impact and excellence. Those involved in winning the award are Prof Chris Gerada (Director), Dr

Michael Galea (Vice-Director), Dr He Zhang (Vice-Director), and many PEMC members contributed to

this success.

The Chinese Research Councils recognise the excellence of particular research groups or

organisations by assigning the title of Key Laboratory. There are three levels of Key Labs, namely

municipal (city level), provincial and national.

This is the first ever Provincial-level Key Lab for UNNC and has therefore been hailed as a critical

mile-stone and major success for the whole UNNC.

SuperDrive Research Programme

The PEMC group in UNNC was awarded a highly strategic important and prestigious research

programme called SuperDrive by the Ningbo 3315 Innovation Team Scheme. Superdrive is a 5 million

RMD project and the award was secured by Dr. M. Galea (PI), Dr. H. Zhang, Dr. G. Buticchi, Prof. C.

Gerada, Prof. Pat Wheeler, Prof. S. Bozhko and many other contributing PEMC Group members.

A huge well done to our PEMC colleagues working at the Ningbo campus!

PEMC Seminar Series

The PEMC Group holds regular seminars, providing researchers, students and visitors with an

opportunity to share their work.

The first seminar of our 2018-2019 session will be held in November.

Presentations by Visitors

We were pleased to host Dr Mykhaylo Filipenko, Head for Center of Competence “Electric Machines

High Power” at Siemens eAircraft, who gave a presentation to PEMC group members and other

interested staff and students. Dr Filipenko's presentation, "Towards Hybrid Electric Aircraft - An

Overview", was delivered on 10th October.

Group Social Activities

PEMC Group members are an active bunch! Badminton, hiking, football - group members have been

out and about, making the most of the University's sporting facilities and the beautiful local

countryside.

Football

PEMC Group members play every Wednesday afternoon. They've held Wednesday sessions for a

year now and new members are always welcome. Please contact Mahir Al-Ani if you'd like to go

along!
