Silver Bullet(1985)

Silver Bullet was one of the first movies filmed in Historic Downtown Burgaw.

Burgaw was transformed into the small town of Tarker’s Mills, Maine. Written

by Steven King and directed by Daniel Attias, the film stars Gary Busey, Ever-ett McGill, Megan Follows, and Corey Haim. When a series of unexplained murders occurs in the town, brother and sister team up to find out who or what is responsible for the killings.

Idlewild(2006)

Downtown Burgaw was a main filming location for the musical movie, Idlewild.

Written and directed by Bryan Bark-er, stars include: Andre Benjaminas

Percival, Big Boi from the hip hop duo OutKast as Rooster, Paula Patton as Angel, Terrence Howard as Trumpy and Faizon Love as Sunshine. The movie takes place in a club that is

taken over by gangsters.

Revolution(2012)

Various areas of Pender County were used in the NBC TV series “Revolu-

tion” in July and August of 2012. Stars include: Billy Burke as Miles, Elizabeth Mitchell as Rachel, Tracy Spiridakos

as Charlie, Giancarlo Esposito as Tom, Zak Orth as Aaron, David Lyons as “Bass”. The main filming locations were the Historic Burgaw Train Depot and the Pender County Courthouse.

The Conjuring(2013)

The Conjuring, directed by James Wan is a supernatural horror film based on a true story. The film is based on the

hauntings which occurred in the Perron home in the early 1970’s. The story is told by Ed & Lorraine Warren. The film stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine Warren. They play

the part of paranormal researchers who conducted an investigation in an old farmhouse owned by the Perron

family (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor), who were experiencing disturbing

events in their old farmhouse.

Dawson’s Creek(1998–2003)

The hit TV show Dawson’s Creek was often filmed at the south end of Topsail Beach. Airing from 1998 to 2003, the show starred James Van Der Beck,

Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, Josh-ua Jackson, Mary Beth Peil, and Kerr Smith. The show’s producers donated to the Karen Beasley Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Beach, and promised not to disturb

any endangered turtle nest with eggs.

One Tree Hill(2003–2011)

One Tree Hill aired on TV for nine seasons. Filming locations included

Burgaw, Lanes Ferry on the NE Cape Fear River, and Topsail High School

in Hampstead. Starring Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty, Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush, Bethany Joy Lenz, Lee Norris, and Paul Johansson. Some of the basketball scenes were filmed at

Topsail High School. The show follows the character’s lives through

high school, then to college.

Tammy(2014)

Tammy was written and directed by Ben Falcone and was filmed around the Downtown Burgaw Courthouse Square during the spring of 2013.

The comedy stars Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Dan

Aykroyd, and Allison Janney. After to-taling her car and getting fired from her

job at Toppy Jack’s fast food restau-rant, Tammy comes home to find her husband getting cozy with a neighbor. Broke and without a car, Tammy heads to her parent’s house where she and

her Grandma Pearl embark on a hilari-ous adventure to see Niagra Falls.

Secret Life of Bees(2008)

The small town of Watha was the 2008 filming location for the movie “Secret Life of Bees”. Stars include: Queen

Latifa as August, Dakota Fanning as Lily, Jennifer Hudson as Rosaleen, Alicia Keys as June, and Sophie

Okonedo as May. The main setting of the film is an old farmhouse in Watha which was painted bright pink just for

filming. Set in 1964, the movie is based on the book by Sue Monk Kidd.

Sleepy Hollow(2013)

Sleepy Hollow filmed on Morgan Road in Currie in the summer of 2013. The Fox TV series is based on the 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy

Hollow” by Washington Irving. Stars include: Tom Mison, Nichole Beharie,

Orlando Jones and Kitia Winter.

Under the Dome(2013)

This CBS TV series is based on the science fiction book by Stephen King.

Stars in the series include: Natalie Martinez, Alexander Koch, Nicholas

Strong, Aisha Hinds, Colin Ford, Mike Vogel, Dean Norris, Rachelle Lefevre, Britt Robertson, and Mackenzie Lintz. Downtown Burgaw is transformed to look like the small town of Chester’s Mill, Maine where an invisible force

field descends upon the town.

The Old Pender County Jail in down-town Burgaw is now the home of the Pender County Visitor Center. In 2013, the Town of Burgaw and Pend-er County agreed to renovate and jointly use the historic building which houses Pender County Tourism and a conference room on the first floor. The second floor jail cells were left untouched for future film opportuni-ties. The Visitor Center is easy to find on the Courthouse Square with plen-ty of parking and information on what to do and see in Pender County.

The building was built in 1924 and served as the Pender County Jail until 1977. The building is a two-story stucco brick building with the second story of the building fitted with cells to house up to 21 prisoners. The first floor served as the living area for the jailer and his family and also doubled as an office for booking prisoners.There were two notable breakouts during the history of the jail. In 1971, two prisoners rushed a guard, knocking him down and escaped into Burgaw. The inmates were tracked by bloodhounds and captured in town about 45 minutes later. The second attempted escape occurred in 1975 when four prisoners over-powered a deputy, took his gun, and held him hostage. Shots were fired in the struggle leaving bullet holes in a metal cell door that are still evident today. The situation was resolved when the inmates surrendered.
