Dear Parent, Croeso pawb. I’ve spent some time this week talking to the pupils about their learning. What has struck me most is how confident and articulate the children were in talking about their learning, they could tell me about the things they enjoy in school and about what helps them learn. They also gave me some excellent ideas about how we can make learning even better at our school. They’ve certainly given me lots to think about!

Attendance ‘We have the right to learn & be the best we can be.’ Unfortunately our attendance has dropped in the last couple of weeks. There has been quite a bit of illness which will understandably impact on attendance. Hopefully we’ve seen the worst of the spring bugs!

In and Around School: ‘We have the right to learn & be the best we can be.’

Blwyddyn 6 took part in a cycling proficiency course last week. They had an

intensive few days that included both Level 1 and Level 2 skills which were very

challenging to complete. Ymdrech dda blwyddyn chwech.

The RNLI came in this week to speak to us about beach safety and the role lifeguards.

Fireman Sam visited the Early Years – they learnt all about fire engines and how firemen help us. Back in class they’ve had fun thinking of questions to ask Fireman Sam and measuring hosepipes.

The Fire Service spoke to children in FP and KS2 about their work and showed them what different parts of an engine do.

School Target 2016 – 2017: 96.5%

This week has been British Science Week in school and teachers have been working hard on our school aim to ‘Deliver a stimulating and innovative curriculum that challenges, excites and inspires pupils to achieve their best’.

The theme of British Science Week this Year was Changes Every class has been exploring the theme in a different way.

Pupil Voice: ‘We have a right to be heard & have our say’

What’s BIG and RED and getting closer? We have been using our new pupil voice blackboard to collect ideas for Comic Relief. Our PACT team looked at the ideas and voted on their top 3 for Comic Relief Day next Friday.

1. Great Pennard Bake-off – free to enter. Cakes for sales afterwards 50p

2. Pyjama or Onsie Day - £1 3. Penalty Shootout against Mr Price - £1

for 3 go’s. Find out more: http://www.comicrelief.com

We’ll be using our pupil voice blackboard to collect other ideas, questions and viewpoints about a range of topics each week. Sometimes this will be linked to our assembly theme, sometimes to look at ways to help improve school life. Next week Miss Bygate is taking some of our PACT team to St. Cadox in Cardiff, along with School Council representatives form Mayals Primary and Waunarlwydd Primary. They will be taking a look at their pupil voice forum. We’ll be sharing and collecting ideas that we could try out here to make sure all our pupils have a voice about school and their learning.

Sport@Pennard ‘We have the right to be fit & healthy’

Blwyddyn Chwech had a great time at the Ospreys Community Rugby Challenge. They played games alongside lots of other schools who have taken part in the project this term.

We’ve had a busy schedule of football matches, Y3/4 played against Mayals Primary School while our Y6 boys football team played excellently to qualify for the next round of the Swansea Football League. They played five games losing just one. Da iawn bechgyn.

We have both football and netball teams playing this afternoon and next week we are taking Y5/6 football and netball teams to play against our cluster schools at the new Bishopston 4G pitch.

Last night Tristan and Henry competed in the County Cross Country Competition. Tristan made it through to the next round while Henry just missed gaining a place. Well done to you both.

Locking up ‘We have a right to be safe and protected from harm’

A few parents are asking why we are locking the school gates after the end of the school day. There are two reasons for this. The first, most importantly, is that we are concerned for the safety of your child. Children are no longer under the supervision of school staff after 3.20 or the end of extra-curricular activities, we need to know that they have safely left the school grounds as we cannot be responsible for any accidents that happen after this time. We have a range of equipment and areas of the school grounds that are potentially dangerous for unsupervised children. Secondly, you will have seen that we are slowly but surely making improvements to our outdoor areas. We want to make sure these areas remain well looked after and safe for use during the school day. I’m sure you will appreciate the additional time and effort given by staff to develop a learning environment that is exciting and inspiring for your child. It is for these reasons we lock the gates after allowing a short time for parents and pupils to leave the grounds. Pennard is very lucky to have excellent public grounds and park close to the school.

Parents Evenings ‘We have a right to be heard & have our say’

Parents evening week is the week of 27th March. Next week times will go up so you can sign up for a time. If you are unable to come into school to arrange a meeting please contact the school so we can find you a suitable slot. As always, should you have any worries or concerns, please contact the school and we will make every effort to see you as soon as possible. Mwynheuwch y penwythnos!
