Our doors open at 6 p.m....We'll be ready to paint at 7 p.m.
This month we are having a whimsy bit of Christmas in July. Our quick
and easy project is a Jane Allen original sea shells and holly on a tin
ornament. Penn's Woods is supplying the ornaments, just bring yourself
and your painting tools.
We will have all the paints available for your use, so don't worry if
you don't have all the colors.
Following are the paints that we will be using: DecoArt Americana
Acrylics: Arbor Green, Buttermilk, Camel, Deep Burgundy, Evergreen,
Hauser Dark Green, Hauser Light Green, Hauser Medium Green, Honey

DecoArt Dazzling Metallics: Emperor’s Gold
Brushes: Jane uses an angle shader and a 2/0
and 10/0 liner plus some brushes for base
coating. Bring whatever brushes you like to
float and do line work. Bring your basic
painting supplies and tools for flyspecking.
A paper palette is fine.

President’s Message
As I write this, Mechanicsburg is celebrating Jubilee Day and tomorrow is
the longest day of the year! I cannot believe how quickly this year is flying
by.
We have had our second Paint In for this year. Amy’s Pantry Sweets design
is warm, cozy and much brighter in person than I expected! I’ll admit that I
had a bit of a struggle on June 15, but I did my best to persevere until the
end of the day. Whether by email or this newsletter, you’ll see that we still
have 2 Paint In’s left for this year. I hope they are both successful!
As we move into July, we are preparing not just for our July meeting and the
treat that Jane will be providing for us, but, for several of us, we are also
preparing for our field trip to Rebecca Baer’s in Hagerstown, MD. The field
trip is scheduled for Saturday July 20 and I am hopeful that all will enjoy the
day.
Your donations for the US Veterans, in WV were collected on Father’s Day
and all are in the process of being stored and separated. I also wanted to let
you know that the Vets in WV also have an Art show in March. Maybe
some of us could make the drive down to see their work…..details will be
provided in a future newsletter.
Regarding the possible 2014 Retreat – we are working on some ideas and
will share them with you as soon as we can…for now, my teaser is that we
are looking at March 1, 2014!
Remember, our tea and art show is now combined with the September meet-
ing – look for additional details later in this newsletter!
SDP is requesting that we load pictures to our Facebook pages, or their Fa-
cebook page. Their focus is to have a significant volume of our work posted
by 10/2/13 for International Decorative Painting Month. From SDP: We are
requesting for you to upload your best photos of your work and SDP related
activities to Facebook. You can either post them directly to SDP's Facebook
page at https://www.facebook.com/societyofdecorativepainters or post them
on your personal (or Chapter) Facebook and simply tag us on the photo.
So for example, after you upload a photo in Facebook simple click the "Tag
Photo" button below the image and type Society of Decorative Painters. It
should suggest us from the list as you start typing. Select us and then we will
receive a notification that you've tagged us in a photo and we can share it
with others! I will also suggest that you include the name of the designer,
whether the art is your original or not.

This is great! Never before have the membership and friends of Penns Woods Painters had an opportunity this terrific. What am I talking about? Free meeting space? No dues? Sorry, no. I’m referring to our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pennswoodspainters/344353589013366?fref=ts How many of you have your own Facebook page to keep up with your family and friends? Penns Woods Painters is no different. We want to stay connected and share the things in our lives that we are passionate about. And we all know the whole reason we belong to PWP is be-cause we love to paint and love to share what we have painted, things we have seen, ideas that we have had regarding new projects. The Facebook pages are different from our website because this will allow more conversation to take place about things that are happening or have happened. If you have missed a meeting and want to know what you missed out on, several of us might just have posted a picture or a comment or two to let you know how it went. Donations to Veterans Hospital grow to take over
PWP President’s home!
While we were setting up for Sheila’s Sale, I was contacted by Mary Dunlap who has been working with the Veterans at the Mar-
tinsburg, WV VA Hospital.
In Mary’s own words: Sharing the Love Of Painting with our Veterans in May will complete six full years. All supplies have
been donated during the course of that time. My time is volunteered (nonreimbursible) as is Eileen's, Gail's, and Joe's. My time
and expense to prep, pick up, and deliver the supplies are also volunteer (nonreimbursible). Our Veterans are so happy to re-
ceive any supplies. I always tell our Veterans who donated the supplies, and each of them in succession around the painting ta-
bles says, "Please be sure to thank them for us" or "Don't forget to thank them for us."
I don't know if you remember how this program started. A Physician's Assistant at the Martinsburg VA said to me, "Mary, the
brushes we throw away are better than the brushes our Veterans are using." Our local painting chapter began donating brushes,
then paints, followed by surfaces, books (even the DP), tapes, etc. There is almost nothing they cannot use--partial bottles of
paints as well as unopened paints, used sandpaper, etc--any supplies. The Government pays for their medical needs but provides
nothing for their recreational therapy.
There are two parts of the Martinsburg VA that receives donations. I teach in the Nursing Home Complex to our Veterans who
have lost the use of their dominant arm or hand and are in therapy learning to use their alternate arm and hand. The largest
class I have had is eighteen Veterans. They appreciate every item donated. The Martinsburg Veterans Administration Hobby
Shop is open only to all veterans. They paint on wood, metal, glass, ceramics, canvas, watercolor paper, slate, etc. The Hobby
Shop has an art show every March (for the past three or four years). Every item has been made by a Veteran and many, many of
the surfaces were donations. There have also been crocheted afghans, leather masks, jewelry, pillows, etc., in addition to the
aforementioned surfaces. They have more than three hundred entries--each completed by a Veteran. There is judging with first,
second, and third place ribbons presented at noon as well as Best Of Show. Our Veterans are extremely talented.
I am happy that I have been able to Share the Love
of Painting With Our Veterans for the past seventy-
one months.
As many of you know, Ed Rouse donated all of the
items left in Sheila’s Stash, at the end of the sale, to
the VA program that Mary leads. In addition, you
may recall that I put an email call out to our PWP
members, asking for your donations to the same
program. I am pleased to note that many of you
donated many items! Mary and her brother, Tim,
picked your donations up on Father’s Day, June 16,
2013. I thought you’d like to see some pictures of
the volume of your donations, so I’ve included some
snapshots along with this article. Thank you for
your donations to help those who fight to keep us
free.

Library Art Display - Thanks to everyone who donated painted items,
the displays looks good! A few folks commented on how lovely the
items were. I hope that everyone had a chance to stop by the library to

I am excited to share our next seminar is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, No-vember 8 – 10, 2013 with Sharon Buononato, CDA. Sharon has been teaching since 1980, had articles printed in Decorative Paint-er and PaintWorks magazines, designed a technique brush line, author of 7 books and many design packets. Visit her website at www.SharonBsOriginals.com We will be painting two projects during this seminar. “Artist By the Sea” is the first project we will be painting on Friday, 1pm – 5pm and Saturday, 9am – 5pm. Then on Sunday, 9am – 5pm we will be painting “Four Tidings Orna-ments”. Painter is responsible for their own surface. Here is the information that was provided by Sharon.
“Artist By the Sea” was originally painted on a 11” x 17” oval tray which is no longer available. Sharon suggests an oval Bentwood Placemat box from Hofcraft #WD1152. Currently this box sells for $25.28. I noticed on Hofcraft website that they have 16” x 11” oval placemats as well.
“Four Tidings Ornaments” is a new packet for 2013. The four ornaments were painted on 3” x 4 ½” oval. A set of four is available through Hofcraft #WD5117-4

Memory Boxes
Thank you to all who have been painting Memory Boxes. Your work is greatly appreciated. We have
recently delivered 2 boxes to Carlisle, 9 to Holy Spirit and 30 to Pinnacle Health Harrisburg.
Below is a letter that was recently posted in a Memory Box email, it shows how much our boxes mean
to those that receive them. This mother was able to locate the painter of the box she received 10 years
earlier.

Dear Bonnie,
While I am certain this well be the strangest thing you have ever heard, I feel there is something you must know. Ten
years ago, I received one of your boxes at a hospital in Oklahoma where I said goodbye to my first son. I had no idea at
the time what that box would come to mean to me. Without much thought, I stored in it photos, hospital bracelets, sym-
pathy cards, and grief paraphernalia provided by the hospital. It spent much of the first year in the top of my closet...it
was just too painful to look at. Over the years, it slowly became my go-to place when I needed to remember. You see, I
didn't have a funeral for my son. His condition was so rare that I did the only thing I thought could someday make my
pain worthwhile. I donated his body so that, one day, another mother may be spared from a loss like mine. I didn't order
a headstone, purchase a plot, or even plant a tree. I did name a star in his honor, but it just didn't bring me the closeness
that I felt with my box. That box has seen a lot in the last 10 years. It is no longer the perfectly painted masterpiece you
once created. It is tattered and worn. There are bumps and blemishes where countless tears have been absorbed. The
edges lack paint from all the times it hit the floor after I fell asleep safe with it's precious memories. Yet, to me, it's
beauty remains unmatched. It has stood quietly by as I have given birth to healthy twin boys and a perfect little girl. It
helped me connect with my stepson in a way that could never have been achieved in any other fashion.
Today marks 10 years since my son was born. I have seen many dark and looming Mays. This year I vowed to make
May different. To spend it doing all of the things I would do if I was given the time to spend with Cameron. I thought I
had it under control. Until the other night. As I was cleaning and organizing the closet, I decided to open the box. I
knew better. I knew how it would end. And, just as I expected, I ended up curled up in tears holding my trusty box. I
read through the cards, looked at the photos, and sobbed. Then I opened a small folded piece of paper that I hadn't no-
ticed before. It was sandwiched between the cards the hospital puts on your door to alert the nurses that your baby has
died. It was the card that came with the box. Inside it, a thoughtful poem and the names of the contributors. Yours
jumped out at me as if it was in lights. I needed to tell you thank you. While you were, no doubt, going on with life nev-
er giving my box another moments thought, your gift was the one thing holding me together. It saw me through my
grief. It listened to my cries. It helped me through my fears of trying again, and watched me grow into the parent I have
become. That simple painted box was the closest I would come to ever holding my child. I owe to you a debt I can nev-
er repay. Your kindness means more to me that I could ever express with mere words. Thank you for sending me hope
when I had none. For helping me, a stranger, heal. Please know that your art has not gone unappreciated. And while it is
not quite the beauty you once sent to me, that tattered box is my most treasured possession.
