Growing and Advancing the Arts at Princeton

Tuesday October 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Penn Hall

Michael Cadden, past director of Princeton’s academic programs in theater and dance and an accomplished teacher in the arts over 35 years at Princeton, has also been a leader in growing and advancing academic offerings in the arts. His keystone achievement has been leading Princeton’s creation of the Lewis Center for the Arts, which he chaired after its completion, between 2012 and 2019. Today, the Center offers several academic programs in both the creative and performance arts. It also offers numerous public performances, exhibitions, readings, screenings, concerts, and lectures. Beginning this fall, Cadden will return to full-time teaching and expects to continue teaching in the Program in Theater for the foreseeable future. This evening, he will share highlights of his experience in both teaching and advancing the arts.

Note: On November 12, this Forum will be complemented by a resident bus trip to Princeton to visit the Lewis Center with a guided tour and lunch at Cargot Brasserie. The tour will feature the Center’s arts programs and the building’s unique architecture, designed by Steven Holl.

We invite back all of our participants and new fellow travelers to hear about others’ adventures. As usual, all travel adventures are welcome. We invite everyone who is interested in hearing about the travel adventures of your friends and neighbors and/or are interested in sharing your travel adventures, to join us for dinner on Wednesday, October 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the Main Dining Room. Pat

Arrived at Pennswood: August, 2019

For some people the path of life can be pleasingly straightforward. For others, such as Pat Ramirez, it is anything but direct. Pat was born in Baltimore but moved with her family to Queens, NY where they lived during the war years. She and her two siblings went to the big public schools in that part of New York City. When she was 10 years old, the family moved to a 19th-century farm in Frenchtown, New Jersey - a big house, with no indoor plumbing or central heating, where water pumped from a cistern that collected rainwater. Her father commuted to his job in Manhattan for awhile until he started a nursery business on the farm. Pat’s mother, who grew up in a Southern family of means, luckily did not fit the stereotype of that background. She managed the family and ran the farm, which raised chickens commercially. Pat remembers vaccinating chickens in the middle of the night and collecting eggs in the morning before getting on the school bus.

Pat moved to Manhattan after graduating from Douglass College, getting to know the city while working as a waitress, employment interviewer and editor. Pat decided to then “chuck it all” to study Spanish and go to Mexico, where she met her future husband. She returned to the United States to join the March on Washington (August 1963). She and her husband married in New York, and

over the years they lived in San Francisco, Somerville, NJ, Mexico City and Guadalajara, following his employment and raising two sons. They eventually returned to New Jersey. She was working as a clerk in the Hunterdon County Library when her marriage ended. Finding herself a single mom, Pat went back to school and earned an MLS from the Rutgers Library School at the age of 40. She and her two boys moved to Flemington, New Jersey where they grew up. The rest of her working life was as a reference librarian at the county library, a job she loved.

Through all this coming and going, Pat took part in the struggle for justice—civil rights, peace in Vietnam, women’s rights, union work, the environment. Serving as a delegate for Jesse Jackson in the 1988 Presidential Primaries is just one example of her leadership and activism. When her kids moved on, she retired to a house in Princeton where she continued her involvement with social and political issues. Pat expanded her interests to art and music and hopes she can do all that and more here at Pennswood Village.

Toe NailsTuesday, October 22

7:00 p.m. in Penn Hall “Poetry is what in a poem makes you laugh, cry, prickle, be silent, makes your toe nails twinkle, makes you want to do this or that or nothing, makes you know that you are alone in the unknown world, that your bliss and suffering is forever shared and forever all your own.” ― Dylan Thomas Find a poem or a bit of prose that you’d like to read. Email or call her to tell her what you’re planning to read and who wrote it. Give her 2 copies. You may, of course, read your own work. Plan to attend the rehearsal, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, in Penn Hall. Because of time, only about 17 people will be able to take part, so get your name on the list quickly.

An Earth Committe Thank YouThe Earth Care Committee would like to thank our Housekeeping Department, under the direction of Patrick McLeester, for getting reusable bags for our linens. This saves using hundreds of plastic bags each week which is a wonderful gift to the environment. I would like to invite Pennswood residents to be as thoughtful of our environment by remembering to take cloth bags shopping and to take one to get food from the cafe. Cloth bags are available in the cafe and in the coat closet. Thank you.
