The crater of Mont Pelee had been wearing its smoke capsince the .d of May, but there was nothing until Inst Monday to indicate that there was the sliglrtest danger. On that day a fitream of boiling lnvn burst through the top of the crater, plunged into the valley of the river Blanche, overwhelm- ed the Guerin Sugar works and killed twenty-three workingmen and the son of tlie proprietor. A commission was appointed by the governor to investigate the outbreuk, and it returned a reassuring report on Wednesday -evening, but about 8 oclock on Thursday morning a shower of tire rushed down on St. Pierre and tlie coast from Le Ourbet, which had a .. population of (},000, to Le Preelieur, which lmd a population of 4,000, burn- ing up everything in its path. Throughout Thursday the bent in the vicinity of St. Pierre was so intense and the stream of flowing lava was so unremitting that it was impossible to approach the town during tlie early part of the day. As evening approach- ed the French cruiser Bucket, after a horrible battle with the heat, suffoca- tion and sulphur fumes, succeeded in making a .dash toward the shore, near- ing the land dose enough to enable her lo take off thirty survivors of the dis- •feter, all of whom were horribly burn- ed and mutilated. SI. Pierre at that time was an abso- lute smoking waste, concealing 30,000 corpses, whose rapid decomposition ne- cessitates in some cases instantly com- pleting their cremation, which is only partially accomplished by the lava. The inhabitant* of Fort de France were panic stricken on the morning of tlie disaster when the sky suddenly blackeued until it was as dark as at midnight. The son shrank back thirty yards aud hot rain began to fall, while alnuts poured down ou the town. This lasted about fifteen fnivutes, and then the town began to resume its normal aspect. The 450 survivors who were brought here Saturday from tlie vicinity of St. Pierre by the French cable repair ship •a me from tlie town of Le Preeheur, where, surrounded on all sides by flowing lava, they were nearly roasted to death aud expected aioinouta.ri.ly to be engulfed. Bteam and exploded heavily. The noise* grew loudei* continually till Wednesday morning, when the old crater, three mjtos in circumference, and the new crater formed by the last eruption belched smoke and stones, forcing the residents of Wallibou and Richmond valley, beneath the volcano, to flee to Chateau Relair for refuge.

The thunderous noises, which were continually increasing, were heard in neighboring islands 200 miles away.

At midday the craters ejected enormous columns of steamy vapor, rising majestically eight miles high and expanding into wonderful shapes, resembling enormous cauliflowers, gigantic wheels and beautiful flower forms, all Ktreaked up a ml down and crosswise

hid flashes of lightning, awing the beholder and impressing the mind

FORT DE FRA NOE, Martinique,

May 12.—Advices just received here

from tlu* vicinity of St. Fierro, ten miles from here, contiim further details of the terrible volcanic upheaval which resulted in the utter destruction of that town and the death of nearly

all its inhabitants. The crater of Mont Pelee had been

wearing its “smoke cap” since the .”d

of May, but there was nothing until Inst Monday to indicate that there was

the sliglrtest danger. On that day a fitream of boiling lnvn burst through

the top of the crater, plunged into the

valley of the river Blanche, overwhelmed the Guerin Sugar works and killed

twenty-three workingmen and the son of tlie proprietor.

A com mission was appointed by the governor to investigate the outbreuk, and it returned a reassuring report on Wednesday -evening, but about 8 o’clock on Thursday morning a shower of tire rushed down on St. Pierre and tlie coast from Le Ourbet, which had a .. population of (},000, to Le Preelieur, which lmd a population of 4,000, burning up everything in its path.

Throughout Thursday the bent in the vicinity of St. Pierre was so intense and the stream of flowing lava was so unremitting that it was impossible to approach the town during tlie early part of the day. As evening approached the French cruiser Bucket, after a horrible battle with the heat, suffocation and sulphur fumes, succeeded in making a .dash toward the shore, nearing the land dose enough to enable her lo take off thirty survivors of the dis- •feter, all of whom were horribly burned and mutilated.

SI. Pierre at that time was an absolute smoking waste, concealing 30,000 corpses, whose rapid decomposition necessitates in some cases instantly completing their cremation, which is only partially accomplished by the lava.

The inhabitant* of Fort de France

were panic stricken on the morning of tlie disaster when the sky suddenly blackeued until it was as dark as at midnight. The son shrank back thirty yards aud hot rain began to fall, while

alnuts poured down ou the town. This lasted about fifteen fnivutes, and then the town began to resume its normal aspect.

The 450 survivors who were brought here Saturday from tlie vicinity of St. Pierre by the French cable repair ship

•a me from tlie town of Le Preeheur, where, surrounded on all sides by flowing lava, they were nearly roasted to death aud expected aioinouta.ri.ly to be engulfed.

Tlie work of relief is progressing here on the most extensive scale possible, hut in anticipation of disturbances the treasury building and the warehouses ore guarded by troops.

The latest reports received here allowed that Java continues to pour down tlie slopes of tlie mountain, slowly engulfing the whole north side of , he isla nd, while fresh crevices are continually opening.

flowed over in six streams down theside of the volcano, and the great noises following united in » great continuous roar all evening, through tlie night to Thursday morning, accompanied willi black rain, falling dust and cinders, attended with midnight darkness all Wednesday, creating feelings of fear and anxious suspense.
