PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3

The solemnity of Pentecost recalled the wondrous event that happened to the apostles after the tri-umph ascension of Christ into heaven. The Acts of the Apostles tells us the disciples were gather together in the upper room when suddenly, tongues of fire rested upon each of the apostles. This event marks the beginning of the Catholic Church as it is today, a Church, fully equipped for the work of evangelization. If you recalled last Sunday’s passage, Jesus sent His disciples to all the nations to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all that I command you…” How were the apostles able to fulfill such an awe com-mand of the Lord? Many of them were afraid as they were just before the passion, the answer to that is that there was a total and supernatural transformation in the life of all the disciples and followers of Christ, the Acts of the Apostles says: “and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim” how wonderful it is to contemplate that episode when the apostles receive the Holy Spirt at Pentecost and everyone begun to understand one another in their own native language and that amazed so much to the common people that they thought, the apostles were drunk, “All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “what does this mean?” but others sneered and said, “they are filled with new wine” Acts 2:12 On this Sunday we ask the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and our lives, so that we too, like the apostles, may be coura-geous in going out and to declare to the whole world everything the Lord commanded us. The reading of the vigil of Pentecost speaks about the people of Israel as ‘dry bones’ that is the vision the Lord allowed Ezekiel to see: the people living far from God’s precepts were just dry bones, but God promised that he will open the graves and have them rise from the dead. “I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the Lord...” so beautifully the Lord restored His beloved people that they may live once again as His beloved one. As we meditate on our own life, Pope Francis said that “Filled with this hope, we can become, in the words of Cardinal Newman, “consolers in the image of the Paraclete… advocates, helpers and bringers of comfort” to others.” On this solemnity let us go to our Lord Jesus who “stood and exclaimed, ‘let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. As Scripture says: Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me” He said this in reference to the Spirit that those who came to believe in him were to receive.” John 7:38-39 I finish with the words of St John Paul II homily on Pentecost Sunday 2001. Inspired by sure hope, we can use the same words as Bl. John XXIII to pray: "O Holy Spirit, Paraclete, perfect in us the work begun by Jesus: enable us to continue to pray fervently in the name of the whole world: hasten in everyone of us the growth of a profound interior life; give vigour to our apostolate so that it may reach all men and all peoples, all redeemed by the Blood of Christ and all belonging to Him. Mortify in us our natural pride, and raise us to the realms of holy humility, of real fear of God, of generous courage. Let no earthly bond prevent us from honoring our vocation, no cowardly considerations disturb the claims of justice, no meanness confine the immensity of charity within the narrow bounds of petty selfishness. Let eve-rything in us be on a grand scale: the search for truth and the devotion to it, and readiness for self-sacrifice, even to the cross and death; and may everything finally be according to the last prayer of the Son to His heavenly Father, and ac-cording to the pouring out of your Spirit, O Holy Spirit of love, whom the Father and the Son desired to be poured out over the Church and her institutions, over the souls of men and of nations." (Discorsi Messaggi Colloqui, cit., IV, p. 350). Come, Holy Spirit, come. Amen. Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

Second Collection The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. has taken on a promi-nent place in the life of American Catholics. As the site of many important events, the National Shrine is also a favorite place to visit when in Washington. As impres-sive as it is, the National Shrine is not quite complete. Like many of the medieval cathedrals the decoration of the Basilica is an ongoing project. One of the final ma-jor pieces to complete is the Trinity Dome. The U.S. Bishops have approved a special collection to help fund the mosaics of the Trinity Dome. Bishop Quinn has asked us to take this collection up next weekend, June 10-11. Thank You for your support

(Salmo 104:30).
