A fresh, contemporary feel with innovative sustainability strategies, the design of 143 Hekili provides a local hub that contributes to the strong community feel of Kailua. It houses a mix of local tenant spaces with a variety of outdoor gathering areas to accommodate public pedestrian traffic.

3470 Waialae

3470 Waialae is a building situated behind older street front buildings peeping out to create an interest for what exists behind. It is designed so when one walks about the new structure, the ever changing juxtaposition of forms create interesting figure ground profiles and shapes. The use of cedar siding and landscaping, integrated nature into the project.

Bakken Hale at Kiholo Bay Photovoltaic Energy Generation & Storage Facility

The Bakken Hale at Kiholo Bay is an ocean front estate on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Due to its remote location in an environmentally sensitive area, a photovoltaic and battery storage facility capable of providing all the electric needs for the Estate’s four buildings was constructed. The design concept was to have the least visual and environmental impact, seamlessly blending the architectural elements.

Café Lani

Project Location: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Project Completion Date: January 2016

Starting with an empty shell, Café Lani, a full service restaurant with a bakery and café/bar was transformed into a dining space which includes various atmospheres for seating. Lounge type seating as if in a home setting was created as well as communal seating, as if in the woods and picnic style seating as in the outdoors. Tree structures towering over the seating areas create an exciting dining experience.

Dr. Joseph Chu Dental Office

Project Location: Lihue, Kauai, HawaiiProject Completion Date: September 2015Submission Type: Commercial/Industrial

The design intent of Dr. Joseph Chu’s orthodontic dental office is confined within an 800 SF space and visually ties-in program spaces. The pivot point of the spatial device is the reception desk which serves both as a security control point and formal counter point.

Hale'iwa Store Lots

The Hale’iwa Store Lots project was inspired by the verdant plantation community. Designed with a strong community oriented approach, the project features two open courtyards perfect for gatherings, concerts and outdoor relaxation and has regained its place as the “Heart of the North Shore”. The project was selected by the city as a pilot project for Low Impact development.

IBEW Local 1186 Office / HI Electricians Training Center - Kahului

The new IBEW 1186 facility is an open, transparent working space with painted, exposed utilities, creating a modern industrial style and offering maximum functionality. The two-story building accommodates both union offices and the electricians training center. A mezzanine level provides storage and allows for future expansion.

Offices for Queen Liliuokalani Trust

The Queen Liliuokalani Trust (QLT) expanded existing corporate offices by developing a new space on a separate floor of an office building. QLT requested a playful, open and flexible design encouraging collaboration and accommodating a range of spaces to work in groups or individually.Requiring a balance of openness and privacy, glass walls and low workstation partitions provided visual openness while a conference room and meeting rooms offered quiet work and meeting areas.

SALT at Our Kakaakoz

SALT Kakaako was designed to have a “Want to be there”, “Want to explore” and “Want to experience” environment offering unique shopping, cuisine, entertainment and interactive experiences infused with vitality and connected by relaxed gathering areas and art filled alleys . The layout of the landscaping is complementary to the adjacent blocks’ streetscape, inviting and beckoning passersby to pause, enter and explore what SALT has to offer.

Smart Home Innovation Center

The Smart Home Innovation Center embodies the concept of integrating sustainable technologies into the home to enhance comfort, control and independence. The objective was to create a warm, welcoming space for clients within an active workspace. The showroom is built out to provide flexibility as products change and evolve. Furnishings were manufactured on site with new and re-used door blanks and recovered redwood.

Tanaka of Tokyo @ OHANA Waikiki East Hotel

A new restaurant was designed for Tanaka of Tokyo at the OHANA East Waikiki Hotel. Providing an open-concept dining area that reflected the voluminous feeling found in Tanaka of Tokyo’s locations, and reproducing the company’s brand image were key. Despite challenges with the space, two distinct dining areas were created, allowing for a spacious, open feel in the front dining area, while the back became cozy and intimate.

Tempura Ichidai

Project Location: Honolulu, Oahu, HawaiiProject Completion Date: December 2015Submission Type: Commercial/Industrial

Tempura Ichidai’s design focuses on the chefs serving cooked to order tempura directly to customers. The restaurant was divided in half, creating two separate open kitchens, each with two stations separated by an aisle. Seating areas surround the kitchens, allowing the chefs quick access to the guests. To unify the space, strong linear and architecturaldesign elements are used throughout, taking a traditional Japanese aesthetic, re-imagined through a modern perspective.

Walgreens Flagship Store Ke'eaumoku

The design concept of Walgreen’s flagship store was to be locally inspired, relevant, and architecturally significant, paying homage to Hawaiian culture in a modern and contextually appropriate way. The distinctive exteriors—angled glass curtain wall and “origami” metal cladding were strategically placed creating a modified version of the traditional Hawaiian Hale A-Frame. The high visibility of this project site creates a distinctive landmark .

Aiea Public Library

Connecting the past, present and future, the Aiea Public Library is a gathering place, and serves as the cornerstone for the Aiea Town Center Master Plan. Built on a portion of the historic Aiea Sugar Mill, the library captures its spirit with a design that reflects details from the old mill buildings. The library is a model of sustainability with 6,000 sq. ft of PV roof panels. It’s design achieved LEED Gold.

East Kapolei Fire Station

The East Kapolei Fire Station includes a Regional Emergency Depot for the storage of medical and food/water supplies, fueling stations and a covered vehicle space. It also included a training tower and paved area for multiple station training. An exterior play court serves as a land bank for a future EMS addition.

Hawaii Community College Palamanui Campus

Project Location: Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

Project Completion Date: August 2015Submission Type: Institutional

The project was envisioned and designed as a learning laboratory. The buildings are modular to provide flexibility for program variation and campus expansion/transitions. Deriving inspiration from the Polynesian culture, the Marae/Piko serves as a gathering space for the campus. It also serves as the campus gateway to welcome visitors, students, faculty, and staff.

Hawaii Pacific University at Aloha Tower Marketplace

Project Location: Honolulu, Oahu, HawaiiProject Completion Date: August 2015

Renovation brought new life to this iconic site, while still preserving and celebrating the overall look and history. This project showcases an adaptive reuse of an aging yet iconic landmark for Honolulu and has breathed new life into Honolulu Harbor by housing almost 300 students and creating a “central hub” for Hawaii Pacific University’s downtown campus.

Joan K. Mendel Kindergarten Classrooms

Joan K. Mendel Elementary School (Mendel) is located at Yokota Air Base in the western Tokyo city of Fussa, Japan. The Kindergarten Classroom Building, complying with the DoDEA 21st Century Education Facilities Specs, was built around 16 existing sakura trees and designed using principles that incorporates natural daylight, and allows noise to filter and be captured by acoustical insulation, thereby preserving the existing natural habitat.

University of Hawaii Information Technology Center

The UH IT Center is designed to be a highly functional account for future data center expansion, and provides a healthy work environment. It’s designed to facilitate and protect the IT system and serves as an emergency situation facility, among other IT and academic uses. Designed with the positive benefits of sustainable technologies employed: renewable energy, water catchment, bio-swale and green walls, daylighting and more.

Hale Kilo I'a

A modern beach home composed of two individual structures, one with a butterfly roof and the other a shed roof, creating an architectural dialogue of scale, form and volume. While sculptural and modern in form, details take cues from traditional Hawaiian architecture. The shape and position of the structures harnesses the sun and trade winds, maximizing the outdoors and create unique spaces that are both inviting and warm.

Hale Luna Kai

Hale Luna Kai is an island oasis for an owner’s retirement home. Careful preservation of a young coconut orchard and dedicating the entrance to agriculture as well as a functional island style design were the requirements of this home in the midst of a rural community. Designed as a single accessible interior living level, this spacious home follows the contours of the land.

Hale Ohana

This project provides an extended family a generational home with universal design for accessibility. The design also embodies this family both physically and spiritually; they wanted to celebrate family! The residence consists of two living units combined as one with a three car garage below. There is a central circulation tower with both stairs and elevator for full accessibility to each floor.

Hale Palekaiko

The clients, in the fashion industry, wanted to blend the tropical character of the exterior with a contemporary and swanky interior while maintaining a strong indoor-outdoor relationship. The “tropical family estate,” which retained many of the existing 72 coconut trees, consists of a 2-story main house, a 2-story guesthouse, a large pool, and a half-court basketball court.

Harirak Residence

This residence, in Bangkok, includes the main house, guesthouse, and carport. Behind the Western kitchen are the semi-outdoor Thai kitchen and the caretaker’s quarters. In the center of the three buildings is the courtyard project. It serves as an oasis in this dense urban neighborhood and offers the family a quiet outdoor space for gathering and activities.

House Without A Beach

Tailored for the client's large extended family gatherings and responding holistically to its environment, the design features two single family, two-story homes centered around a separate pool pavilion and a water feature which serves as a focal point for entertainment and celebrations. A Hawaiian inspired double pitched roof and a layered lanai pergola doubles as a natural light shelf.

Ka’upulehu Residence

Project Location: South Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

With the rugged coast of South Kohala’s new Kukio development as the backdrop, the intent was to achieve equilibrium with nature – a balance where home, as a tropical sanctuary, fits into a beautiful setting with quiet strength. A Japanese-like sense of restraint is prevalent in the design, while pavilion-like hipped roofs convey a sense of island architecture, and the sinuous curves of three lanai eaves of the main house intimately connect the architecture to the ocean.

Kapiwai - Urban Sanctuary

Nestled within forest land at the rear of Pauoa Valley, the Kapiwaidevelopment creates a memorable, environmentally and socially sustainable urban sanctuary. The 24 duplex units are a stylized mid-century modern architype employing butterfly and shed roofs with vaulted ceilings. The concept was to create a community designed to conform to the individual over time, which integrated both natural land tenure and modern housing in a convenient, highly desired location.

Makiki Modern Makeover

Project Location: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii Project Completion Date: February 2016

Submission Type: Residential

Designed by renowned Hawaii architect Vladimir Ossipoff in 1952, the mid-century modern home underwent several additions and renovations over the years. The new owner requested to expand and update the house, yet retain and enhance the clean, modern lines of Ossipoff’s design. The renovation carefully expanded and updated the spaces, and inserted new state of the art systems with the intent to feel as if it had always been a part of the home.

One Ala Moana

One Ala Moana is an 18-story, 205-unit, LEED certified luxury condominium set above an existing six-story parking garage. The residential tower was designed to maximize units with ocean views. The typical tower floor consists of 14 units with core elements, including stairs, elevators, and trash rooms, on the non-ocean side of the building. As a result, 10 of the 14 enjoy ocean views while four smaller units have a mountain view.

Symphony Honolulu

Symphony Honolulu is the newest high-rise residential condominium and mixed-use development in the Kaka’ako Special district. It’s comprised of Symphony Tower, a 43-story high-rise with 385 units, and Velocity, an exotic auto gallery presenting European cars with a fine dining restaurant and café. Velocity’s gallery concept includes ongoing events within an internal multilevel piazza to engage the community.

The H House

Set on the upper slopes of a hillside with views of Diamond Head, a key design aspect of the H House multi-level residence was the interconnected nature of the home's public spaces. Communal areas flow freely without structural separation and achieved by creating extremely long spans without intermediate columns and deep beams. Concrete, glass and steel produced forms appear to float lightly above the home’s central spaces.

Wai'olu Residence

Project Location: North Kona Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

Project Completion Date: March 2015 Submission Type: Residential

The Wai'olu residence is an extended family home, overlooking natural anchialine ponds, and views of Uluweuweu Bay and Kikaua Point from all major living spaces. Materials for the home reflects a spirit of Arts and Crafts, island life and durability. Transition space elements, such as entry vestibules, lanais and foyers, were integrated into the home for purposes of function, while also adding considerable graciousness to the atmosphere of the home.
