For most people, 30 years in a singlecareer may seem like an eternity, butfor Warrant Officer Rodney Abra-hams, he still feels he has many moreyears ahead.Abrahams, a father of two and mar-
ried for the last 23 years, has been em-ployed in the SouthAfrican Police Ser-vice for 30 years, spending almost allof them stationed at Manenberg policestation.He says although it has been a chal-
lenge to find balance between his per-sonal life andprofessional life, his fam-ily has been behind him all the way.“What I am trying to do is to not be
a police officer at home. I do not wantto police my family, because it is nota good thing, but they have been verysupportive,” he says.After initially joining the police in
April 1986 as a charge office clerk atBellville Police Station, Abrahamswas sent to the Bellville Magistrate’sCourt as a court orderly. He then en-rolled at the police training college thesame year, graduating as a constable.He was transferred to Manenberg po-lice station where he has been eversince. He would start outin the charge office be-fore being deployed inthe uniform investi-gation unit, dealingmostly with pettycrimes.V Continued on page 2

Gangviolence inManenberghashit boil-ing point after 17 people have lost theirlives in the ongoing gang wars.
A total of 15 firearms have been confiscat-ed in the past three weeks and 17 attemptedmurders have been reported, confirms Ma-nenberg police spokespersonLieutenant IanBennett.He also adds police and law enforcement
agencies have saturated the area.“Additional police officers, including Law
Enforcement officers, have saturated thehotspot areas by doing stops and searchesand executing searchwarrants in the identi-fied hotspots,” Bennett explains.He says on Tuesday (12 April) at 23:30 po-
lice members were patrolling the areaaroundBeatrixCourtwhen theynoticed twosuspicious males walking to the court.“(Police)managed to corner themand con-
ducted a search. They searched the two boysaged 15 and 18 years old and found a 9mm
pistol with three live rounds.”On the same day, at 10:30, Bennett says of-
ficers of the Law Enforcement StabilisationUnit received information regarding a fire-armat anaddress inStormsriverRoad. “Theofficers found the five men in the house.They searched the premises and found a pis-tol, twomagazines and14 roundsof ammuni-tion. They also confiscated R19 700 in cash.”The fivemen, agedbetween21and33,were
arrested and will be appearing in court forthe possession of unlicensed firearm andammunition soon.Provincial police spokesperson Lieuten-
ant Colonel André Traut confirms the cur-rent warfare started at the end of March butdid not confirm the amount of fatalitiessince the flare-up. “The figures providedcannot be confirmed due to the moratoriumon the release of crime statistics.”Traut says they are grateful for the com-
munity reporting crimes in the area. “Thepolice get information from the communityon a regular basis, which is much appreciat-ed. In fact, we would like to encourage the
public to keepassisting thepolicewith infor-mation in this way. Unfortunately there areincidents when police officers are attackedby community officers when they are doingtheir job.”Traut confirms during the period Thurs-
day 31 March to Tuesday 12 April, 33 arrestsweremade in theManenbergareaduringpo-lice operations and 13 firearms with ammu-nition, of which five were automatic rifles,were confiscated. In further efforts to curbcrime and focus on the gang war flare-up inthe area, executive mayor Patricia de Lillesays the City of Cape Town’s stabilisationunit was deployed to the area.“I have called the Western Cape police
commissioner Major General KhombinkosiJula to discuss the gang war taking place.We are very concerned about the high levelof violence threatening the lives of so manyresidents. NOW OPENNOW OPEN Police seek murderersPolice are calling on the help of the commu-nity in their search for two suspects afterthey murdered a man on Saturday 9 April.Lansdowne police spokesperson Ser-
geant Nkululeko Mnyaka says the two sus-pects committed the murder at about 21:00.“The 34-year-old victim was walking on
Racecourse Road from Kenilworth Centrewith his girlfriend when he was attackedand stabbed,” says Mnyaka.The victim was declared dead on the
scene after he was stabbed four times.“The victim’s girlfriend says the suspects
followed themand started to attackher boy-friend for no reason. They did not ask foranything. The suspects are unknown to thevictim and his girlfriend,” he explains.Mnyaka says the motive behind the kill-
ing is unknown. The suspects fled the sceneon foot towards the M5 bridge. One waswearing a long sleeve top with red andwhite stripes. A case of murder has beenopened.Anyonewith information is urged to con-

A delegation of the community of Hano-ver Park submitted a petition with 1 344names to the provincial health depart-ment in a bid to show solidarity againstthe moving of their health centre out ofthe community.The petitionwas delivered by Pastor Is-
sel Simmers representing the HanoverPark Ministers Fraternal, Rene Baron ofthe Hanover Park Business Forum andDianeConstable chairperson of theHano-ver Park Social Development Forum.Baron says the petition conveyed a
“strong message by the people of the areathat they oppose the decision by the De-partment of Health to move the Commu-nity Health Centre of Hanover Park outof Hanover Park”. “The petition is sup-ported by the residents, organisations,various community sectors and theWardCommittee of Hanover Park,” she says.She further adds the community is furi-
ous that no consultation took place.Such a decision will be of great incon-
venience to the elderly, chronic patientsand emergencies amongst others, shesays.“The community and the municipality
have proposed another site more conve-nient for the erecting of a new Communi-ty Health Centre that will run in conjunc-tion with the proposed development forHanover Park.”

crimes, particularly those related togang activity.The recent upsurge in gang violence
does not surprise Abrahams at all, andhe says the patternhas beenahard oneto break down over the years.“The gang violence is a recurring
thing. We are living in a communitywhere people are in need of resourcesand these gangsters are taking advan-tage of that. The youngsters want to beinwith the gangs and these people sup-ply them. They will take over yourhouse in exchange formoney. This hasbeen going on since I have been here.Now, 30 years later, it is still happen-ing,” he adds.He feels people need to have a shift
in mindset as the police cannot do thisalone. “This is a thingwhere police, so-cial crime, correctional services ... allneed to work together to help changethe minds of the people in the area.”He says the best part of his job is see-
ing a case through to the courts and ob-taining a conviction. “To see that thevictim is satisfied with the work I putin, is definitely thebest thing there canbe for what I do,” he said.Althoughhe says he neverwanted to
leaveManenberg police station, he didadmit to having put in a transfer ortwo during the earlier years. “I startedto like working here – not that I thinkother people in other places do notneed more specialised help, but towork with these people is satisfyingand rewarding.”

Police have confirmed that gangs are de-ploying their own reinforcements into
areas where the current gang war is takingplace.The upsurge in gang violence regarding
territory started in TamboVillage onThurs-day 31 March between the Hard Livings andDixie Boys gangs in the area.According to Lieutenant Ian Bennett,
spokesperson for Manenberg police, thegang conflict continued and affected the oth-er gangs, namely the Americans and theClever Kids, which compounded the situa-tion into a full scale gang war.Police have since beefed up their presence
in the area along with the help from the Cityof Cape Town’s stabilisation unit to focus onareas notorious for gang activity. However,the situation has escalated to the point thatthe gangs themselves have also called fortheir own reinforcements,withBennett con-firming that arrests have taken placewhere-by the suspects – all known gang members– do not hail from the immediate area.“There are people who are being arrested
and brought in for questioning who havecome from outside the Manenberg area.There is nothing that we can do about that,because then we will be violating people’sconstitutional rights in terms of freedom ofmovement,” says Bennett.He urged community members to call
them on any of the emergency numbers ifthey see any suspicious people who are notfrom the area, in order for them to respondand deal with the situation. “Anybody withinformation that leads to the successful ar-rests and confiscation of firearms will be re-warded financially.”
Meanwhile, in a provincial police addressto the media last week, Major General Jer-emy Veary said police have stepped up ef-forts inmonitoring communicationbetweenprison gangs and those found on the outside.
“We have picked up and have had success-es in that (social media) terrain in the useof Facebook, in the use of WhatsApp andthose things are there for being looked at.”He went on to say that using information
obtained on a social platform would not al-ways be enough in order to affect a convic-tion.
WesternCape police commissioner,MajorGeneral Khombinkosi Jula, also addressedfears that police resources are beingstretched, saying that the issue is “receivinga note of attention and is being taken veryseriously”. “We know that it is not going tobe possible to have policewhowill be availa-ble in all places at the same time. It is forthat reason that we have an integrated ap-proach. We are mobilising the community,we are mobilising the Metro Police, we aremobilising theCPF, a number of other stake-holders and even the churches to work to-gether.”
Jula says various operations within thearea will be ongoing and that the deploy-ment of provincial forces in the area will as-sist in reassembling a high-risk task team,which will be on hand for future and addi-tional interventions.
The issue of harbouring gang memberswas also a hot topic amongst the police, withBennett reiterating that those who are notgang members, but are found to be assistingthem, will be dealt with in the harshest pos-siblemanner. He confirmed there have beentwo arrests where community memberscould not account for their legally licensedfirearms, only to have those firearms re-
trieved from known gang members.“People should not criminalise them-
selves by thinking they are doing other peo-ple a favour by lending out or renting outtheir firearms, or harbouring people whohave been involved in criminal activity. Ifthey do this and they are found by us, theymust not expect any leniency from the po-lice,” Bennett says.Manenberg Safety Forum (MSF) chairper-
son Roegshanda Pascoe says despite the sta-bilisation unit being sent into the area, it isstill not enough. “The unit needs to take aproactive approach. They only respond aftershootings have taken place. The gangs areclever and are causing diversions to throwthe stabilisation unit off course as well.”
She explains diversions are caused whengangs shoot inonepart ofManenbergbut the“real threat is then caused on another endafter the police and unit responds to wherethe shooting occurs”. Pascoe says althoughpeace talks were held on Sunday, “this is toget the unit out of the area”.“Gangs do not want police in the area be-
cause it doesn’t allow them to continue withtheir activity. So now after the talks wereheld people are happy but they are beinglured into a false sense of security,” Pascoesays. “This can be very dangerous becauseeven after the talks last night, one could stillhear shots being fired right throughManen-berg. “Pascoe says she also fears for vulnerable
children during this time. “When thesegangs go quiet it’s then that they are recruit-ing because they lost many men during thistime. This is why it is so important for usto host the upcoming imbizo on Friday 20and Saturday 21 May,” she says.
A venue for the imbizo was set to still beconfirmed by the time of going to print.

was launched in Manenberg last year forfour months during July and November,and theywere then deployed toOttery, Lav-ender Hill and other hotspots.“Fifty-eight officers of the Stabilisation
Unit have been redeployed to Manenbergand will be assisting the Gang and DrugTask Teamwith disruptive policing as wellas integrated policing operations. Jula hasconfirmed that the police will also deploy36 officers. We will be coordinating our ef-forts,” she says.Law Enforcement confiscated four more
guns last week – three of which were foundin Manenberg.On Thursday 7 April, the Gang and Drug
Task Team arrested a 32-year-old suspectwith a .38 special revolver and four roundsof ammunition in Hanover Park. The sameteam later arrested a 26-year-old suspect forpossession of an illegal firearm and ammu-nition in Manenberg. Five other suspectswere arrested in Manenberg for possessionof narcotics.That same day, the LawEnforcement Sta-
bilisation Unit confiscated two firearms inManenberg.Mayco member for safety and security,
JP Smith, says the firearms will be sentaway for ballistic tests.“There are far too many illegal firearms
on our streets. While I commend our offi-cers for their sterlingwork, Iworry that thefour firearms taken off the streets are sim-ply being replaced by others brought intocirculation,” Smith says.He says “cracking the weapons supply
chain should be a critical part of policingefforts to quell gang violence”. “Once weroll out Shot Spotter in Manenberg andHanover Park, we will see a further in-crease in the number of firearms confiscat-ed.”Residents from Manenberg say they are
too scared to send their children to schoolduring the gang violence.Spokesperson for the Western Cape Edu-
cationDepartment (WCED) Jessica Shelversays they have not had any reports whereshootings have taken place on school prem-ises in Manenberg. “The principal of Ma-nenberg Secondary reported to our SafeSchools division that staff and learnersfound a body lying outside the schoolgrounds when they arrived about 07:20 onMondaymorning. The learners did not wit-ness the shooting. The principal believedthat the incident was gang related.”Shelver says the school did not require
additional support, as after the removal ofthe body the area around the school wasquiet.“Teaching and learning continued as nor-
mal. The principal will advise Safe Schoolson whether they need additional support.Safe Schools and the WCED are workingclosely with schools and other partners toaddress school security and broader social
issues.“We have to adopt a ‘whole of society’ ap-
proach to deal with these issues,” Shelverexplains.Shelver says the department has invested
heavily in new “bullet reflective” fencing atManenberg schools, among other securitymeasures. “The fences, made of temperedsteel, are difficult to cut and difficult toclimb because of the ‘closemesh’ design. Ac-cording to our information, the fences willnot stopabullet, butwill deflect one, depend-ing on the calibre of the bullet,” Shelversays.The WCED installed the fences following
gang violence in Manenberg last year. Thefencing has been installed at 12 of Manen-berg’s 14 schools. The other two schools al-ready have palisade fencing, Shelver says.“Safe Schools works closely with the po-
lice and the Metropolitan Police, who pro-vide security in the streets, when learnersare moving through the area before and aft-er school.”Western Cape Minister of Education Deb-
bie Schäfer is “extremely concerned regard-ing the flare-up of gang violence around ourschools in Bonteheuwel, Modderdam andManenberg”.“When there are reports of violence in a
certain area, schools implement their safetyplan. In terms of the Occupational Healthand Safety Act, every school must have asafety plan that meets local requirements,and a committee responsible for implement-ing the plan.”Schäfer says in recent events, schools in
Manenberg, Modderdam and Bonteheuwelhave followed their safety plans, and alertedthe authorities to the imminent threat out-side the school gates.

The annual Slave Route Challenge whichsees runners being taken on a route that
encompasses an array of South Africa’smost historical sites, has become a favour-ite on the calendar of novice and elite run-ners alike.The race, taking place on
Mother’s Day (Sunday 8May), however has a muchdeeper and more personalmeaning, says event spokes-person Fatima Allie.Having been born in the
Bo-Kaap, Allie was raised inWalmer Estate and went toschool in District Six and isa self-professed defendant ofthe Cape Malays. “When itcomes to the Slave RouteChallenge itself, we look atour ancestors who camefrom Indonesia, Java andMalaysia. They were theones who came with all theskill. They were the build-ers. So my ancestors werenot slaves per sé, my ancestors were exiledfrom Indonesia to the Cape.”She goes on to say that because the slaves
were forced to work and interact with otherlabourers brought to the area, that is howall the cultures started to mix and that asa result started to weave the fabric whichmeshes South Africa’s rich history. “If youlook around, the oldest standing building isthe Castle of Good Hope. The Castle of GoodHope was built by the slaves. You look atCity Hall and the Grand Parade, all of these
iconic and old places and structures inCapeTown were all built by the slaves. Then yourealise that there are so many historicalsites throughout Cape Town that people didnot even know of,” adds Allie.Besides the historical aspect the race af-
fords itself to, Allie says that there is anamazing atmosphere of togetherness onrace day. “It is the spirit ofUbuntu that you
feel. You will see a grand-mother who has never everwalked (in an event) in herentire life. She is now walk-ing the 5km with her grand-children because her daugh-ter and her husband are go-ing to be running the 10kmwhile their teenager is run-ning the 21km, so this is afamily event. It is about peo-ple coming together from allwalks of life, all religious de-nominations.”Allie reminded those who
still wish to participate inthe 21km race need to enteronline no later than Sunday24 April. She confirmed thatthere will still be opportuni-
ties to enter the other three events (5km funrun/walk, 10km run and 10km big walk) onSunday 1May aswell as Friday 6 and Satur-day 7 May at Cape Town’s City Hall.“Come and explore this whole journey of

A team of six women are takingit to the streets to do their jobs
“better than men”.The City of Cape Town recently
introduced its all women teamfrom Heideveld – who fix potholesand do maintenance work on foot-ways and stormwater pipes – andthe energetic team say they aremore than capable of doing theirjob better than men.This all-female roads-repair
team is the fourth to be appointedby the City of Cape Town and ispart of the Women at Work Pro-gramme. The programme has beennominated for the fourth annualWomen in ConstructionAwards inthe category for the most innova-tive programme.
The all-female roads repair teamis based at the Transport for CapeTown (TCT) depot in Heideveldand has been appointed as part ofthe Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme (EPWP) within TCT to re-pair and do maintenance in Hei-develd, Manenberg, Tambo Vil-lage, Athlone, Surrey Estate andthe areas adjacent to Jakes GerwelDrive.
Mayco member for Transport,Brett Herron, says the programmeis to empower women in the work-place.
“Women at Work is a gendertransformationprogrammewithinTCT which is collaboratively im-plemented by the TCT TrainingAcademy, the EPWP and selectedroads depots across the city. Thepurpose of this programme is to
empower women in the workplaceby providing them with skills formanual work that is generally as-sociated with men,” he says.With the skills and entrepre-
neurial abilities they develop dur-ing the 10-month employment peri-od, these women will be betterequipped to find placement in thepermanent job market, Herronsays.
The team was established inMarch 2016 and consists of Kash-iefa Beck (34) from Heideveld,Nomzamo Feni (43) from Gugulet-hu, Joyleen Melton-Gordon (40)from Heideveld, Pumla Mfana (39)from Gugulethu, Ilhaam Ely (39)fromHeideveld and Akeelah Abra-hams (34) from Heideveld.
They follow in the footsteps ofthe all-female teams of the TCT de-
pots in Ndabeni (introduced in Au-gust 2015), Fish Hoek (introducedinNovember 2015), andKuilsRiver(introduced in February 2016).
“The team from Heideveld nowcounts among the 24 pioneers of along-term process whereby theCity is tackling gender transforma-tion in the transport realm. Wom-en are generally under-represent-ed in the transport sector – for ex-
ample, within TCT, womenconstitute only 3,4% of those in-volved with the physical mainte-nance of roads and stormwater in-frastructure,” he explains.Herron says he is confident that
this project will assist in changingperceptions about the type of workthat women can do.The fourth annual Women in
Construction Awards will takeplace in Johannesburg on Tuesday10 May.“The City is extremely proud of
this programme. I am confidentthat it will also be recognised on anational level as one of themost ad-vanced and game-changing gendertransformation projects in thecountry,” Herron says.The women underwent a physi-
cal assessment to test their abilityto perform the type of work re-quired and they were interviewedand evaluated by members of thedepot management.“A total of 24 women would have
benefitted through the Women atWork Programme by the end of thefinancial year. We have spent ap-proximately R1m on this pro-gramme. We now aim to establish10 all-female roads repair teams ac-commodating another 60women inthe next financial year,” Herronadds.The 24 women will exit the pro-
gramme on Thursday 30 June.Thereafter, TCT will embark on anew recruitment process to findcandidates to replace them, as wellas to expand the programme witha further six teams situated at oth-er suitable roads depots across thecity..

Former District Six residents are tired ofpromises and want action in their quest
for restitution for their forcible removalfrom the area in the 1960’s.At a meeting hosted by the District Six
WorkingCommittee (D6WC), held on Satur-day at theBlackpool Sports Club in Salt Riv-er, the hall was packedwith people fromdif-ferent historically disadvantaged commu-nities.They came to hear how urban restitution
should be approached and implemented byall the relevant stakeholders in a holisticfashion, starting with the healing process.Some of the important guest speakers in-
cluded Diana Oliver from the RestitutionFoundation, Amelia September and MarioWanza of theManenberg People’s Forum aswell as local councillor Achmat Williams.Shahied Ajam, chairperson of the organi-
sation, said it is important that committeeimpress upon theminister of rural develop-ment and land reform, Gugile Nkwinti; theCity of Cape Town and all relevant stake-holders to develop the entire 30 hectare va-cant land in District Six immediately andsimultaneously, starting with the thirdphase which is currently in progress.“The idea is to build as many four-story
apartments to accommodate as many resti-tution beneficiaries,” he said.“The emphasis is on densification with
sufficient public spaces and greenery.”The urban park in Searle Street border-
ing Woodstock and District Six – as well asthe adjacent Trafalgar swimming pool – al-ready serves as open public spaces in prepa-ration for those thousands of people comingback to District Six, Ajam explained.Anothermatter discussedwas a dignified
and equitable financial compensation pack-age for those not wanting to return or want-ing alternate land.There is some urgent action to take place
with regard to the Good Hope Centre, Ajamsaid.“We will legally oppose the City of Cape
Town in court for closing the doors of theGoodHope Centre to the public threeweeksago when the City voted unanimously to
lease it out to a foreign TV company for thenext two years.“The committee and its coalition part-
ners launched an urgent application tocourt last week,” explained Ajam.Also discussed was the need to identify
state-owned land within the city peripheryfor those who cannot be accommodated inDistrict Six.“Urbanisation is rapidly increasing and
everybody has a right to the city especiallythose who were previously evicted and dis-possessed during the apartheid era,” saidAjam. “Integration in the inner-city spaceis paramount. The walls of racial and spa-tial segregation can be broken down in Dis-trict Six.”Members also passed a unanimous reso-
lution to the effect that the reference group(who represent the approximately 1000 ben-eficiaries who claimed between 1995 to1998), be fused with the D6WC and form oneentity that will speak with one voice for allthe people.The D6WC has a mandate to represent
over 300 families and is already a legallyregistered entity with the Department ofTrade and Industry aswell aswith the Intel-lectual Property Commission.Finally theD6WC, in addition to assisting
the people of District Six, also assist manyother previously disadvantaged communi-ties with their respective restitution claimsin areas like Ndabeni, Pinelands, Constan-tia,Goodwood,NewlandsClaremont andSi-mon’s Town.“To push the envelope even further the
D6WC is planning a major march to parlia-ment during July to create an awareness tolocal, provincial and national governmentthat the people are serious about dignityrestoration and coming back to the city,sooner rather than later,” said Ajam.“It must not come to a point where, be-
cause government is stalling unnecessary,that the people will start to occupy the va-cant land in District Six soon and buildtheir own make-shift houses while waitingfor the powers-that-be to make up theirminds. It is a well-known fact that em-ployees have a duty to act in goodfaith at the workplace, includingthe duty of employees to be subor-dinate and to comply with the in-structions of the employer in re-gard to their duties and work.
Employers have, however, de-veloped job descriptions in orderto allocate certain responsibili-ties to certain employees and tocreate a framework to promote ef-ficiencies and to ensure accounta-bility. The question remains, towhat extent does this impact anemployee’s refusal to performcertain tasks which fall outsidethe scope of their job description?
In Noosi vs Exxaro Matla Coal(June 2015), the Labour Court ad-dressed the issue of insubordina-tion and confirmed an importantlegal principle in regard thereto.
The case involved an electri-cian who had refused to obey theinstructions of the senior fore-man – to cease the operation of aconveyor belt which was operat-ing in dangerous conditions. Theemployee was charged with, interalia, gross insubordination anddismissed. He referred the matterto the CCMA, where the commis-
sioner found that the employeracted appropriately and as a re-sult the dismissal was fair. Theemployee then took the matter onreview where the Labour Courtfound that the test for insubordi-nation is not whether the instruc-tions fall within the job descrip-tion of the employee, but ratherwhether the instructions werereasonable and lawful. The courtheld and supported the position.
Should it be shown that the in-struction was unlawful, it wouldbe the end of the inquiry. If it isfound that the instruction waslawful, the expectation is that theemployee, to whom such instruc-tion was issued, should have com-plied. It will have little, if any, todo with whether the instructionis related to the employee’s job de-scription because it will never bea justification for an employee torefuse lawful instructions merelybecause the instructions are nothis or her direct functions.
This has a two-fold lesson forboth the employer and employee:
. Employers should regularlyensure their employees’ job de-scriptions are accurate.
. Employees still have an over-riding duty of good faith to theiremployers, whether the instruc-tion falls within their job descrip-tion or not, and a failure to com-ply with instructions which arereasonable and lawful may be suf-ficient grounds for dismissal.V This column was contributed by DenzilJacobs, an admitted advocate with ex-pertise in commercial law. Steenberg shinesin charity driveThe Steenberg Golf Club’s Ladies section
has set a solid benchmark at the startof this year’s club competitions for the
Sanlam Cancer Challenge as they raisedR19 000 in the effort to support the CancerAssociation of South Africa (Cansa).
The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is South Af-rican golf’s biggest charity drive in the fightagainst cancer and has teed off its 23rd yearat golf clubs around the country, with thou-sands of amateur golfers joining together totry and beat the over R3.5m raised last year.
From March to July, amateur golfersaround South Africa will take part in theirlocal golf club’s Sanlam Cancer Challengegolf dayswith the double aimof raisingmon-ey for CANSA as well as trying to qualify fortheir respective regional finals.
The winners of the regional finals, whichwill be played from July to August, will thenqualify for the National Finals to be playedon both the Gary Player Country Club andLost City Golf Club courses at Sun City from9 to 2 October.
And in this shared spirit of being proact-ive in the battle against cancer, 48 golfersfrom the Steenberg Ladies section did theirbit to work together as “Wealthsmiths” forthe greater good of their community.
“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is a popu-
lar event on the Steenberg Ladies golf calen-dar. There has always been overwhelmingsupport of this fundraising initiative atSteenberg as many of our members are can-cer survivors whilst others have lost friendsand family members to this illness,” said DiBrooks, Steenberg Ladies committee mem-ber.
“The Sanlam Cancer Challenge repre-sents not only an opportunity to raise fundsfor a worthy cause but also for our membersto compete regionally and nationally. Steen-berg members have historically done well inthe Regional Finals and last year two of ourmembers, Peter Terrblanche and Gwen Or-tlepp, qualified for the finals, with Gwen fin-ishing second in the A Division nationally.It was a fantastic opportunity for these play-ers to play at Sun City and to meet a numberof interesting players from around the coun-try.”
The purpose of the Sanlam Cancer Chal-lenge is to raise funds and awareness annu-ally for the fight against cancer. “Play, physical education and sport arefoundational to the holistic development ofchildren and an initiative of this nature con-tributes to a healthier community and en-courages sports activity,” saysRosentrauch.
All sporting codes will be considered.Coaches, teachers or parents (anyone, in
fact) can nominate their most talented sportstar. Each monthly winner will receive a giftpack and will be entered in the People’sPost/Let’s Play Sports Awards of the Yearto be held at the end of the year.
Last year’s overall winner was TasneemCozyn of Muizenberg High School for herfantastic karate achievements.
