Celeb shows off hoodCape Town Tourism has

launched the “Love Cape Townneighbourhood series”, a collec-tion of videos revealing three of thecity’s suburbs. The videos are a direct response

to the “travel like a local” trend. This after research revealed visi-tors want to experience the placesthey travel in ways that exposethem to the quirky and interestingfeatures enjoyed by locals.Showcasing local hidden gems

around the city, three areas havebeen chosen for the first videos inthe series, with another expectedto be made in the next threemonths. Viewers are given a sneak

peak into the local hotspots bywell-known Cape Town residents.Celebrity chef Karen Dudley

takes you toWoodstock, with its ec-lectic blend of old and ultra-mod-ern Cape Town, local comedian SivNgesi to the cosmopolitan heart ofthe city centre and musician ArnoCarstens to the beautiful coastalsuburbwith the feel of a fishing vil-lage, Kalk Bay.According to CEO Enver Dumi-

ny, CapeTownTourism is respond-ing to this trend to explore localhaunts by loading neighbourhoodguides to areas around the MotherCity on to YouTube.“We understand that we’re ap-

pealing to the main target audi-ence, but also that with this newtrend we can actively spread thepositive effect of tourism,” he says.Being exposed directly to travel-

lers allows local businesses, espe-cially the smaller ones, to be show-cased on a global platform, Dumi-ny explains.“This will also allow for a direct

injection of funds into areas be-yond the traditional tourist routesor sites. This will ultimately leadto increased job creation andawid-er spread of the tourist rand,” hesays.V The videos can be viewed at www.you-tube.com/user/CapeTownTourism.

The new Community Policing Forum(CPF) chairperson for sector four in

Woodstock says at the top of his priority listis to set up a neighbourhood watch and fo-cus on youth programmes to keep young-sters off the street.Youssef Kanouni, who has been the

chairperson for a couple ofmonths, says hewants to improve the area and is deter-mined to fight crime. That’s why he tookup his new role.Originally from Morocco he has been in

South Africa for over two decades. He has always had a passion for fighting

crime and he has worked as a police reser-vist for at least three years.Kanouni says taking up the new position

was an easy decision for him as he has al-ways been involved with and up to date onwhat’s happening in his community.Above all hewants to help in fighting crimein his area. His wish is to form a neighbourhood

watch and at themoment he is liaisingwithroleplayers to make sure that happens.Kanouni says he believes his area is im-

proving and there is a lot more that can bedone if people work together.“Life here is changing, it has been worse

beforebutweareheading in the right direc-tion. I want Woodstock to be a better andsafer place for everyone and for all to enjoya better life.“To see more change people must come

together and fight crime, communitiesneed to be involved because this is not aone-man joband itwon’t be doneovernight. It will take time, but with the right mindand attitude nothing is impossible. Peoplealso need to work hand in hand with thepolice and this will make life much easierin fighting crime,” he says. One part of Kanouni’s plans is to have

youth programmes that will keep young-sters busy and occupy their time. Now andagain they play in the hall, but he wants tohave permanent spaces for young people touse. “This will stop youngsters from becom-ing addicts. We have to create more fun spa-ces for them, have parks and play areas tonurture their talents. There is so much tal-ent in this area and we don’t want that togo towaste becauseyoungsters are engagingin substance abuse,” he says.

Assistant secretary at the hospital Ricar-do vanNiekerkhas requested patients as-sist staff as much as possible. “With thetheft of the computers they have to do allthe work manually which is really slow-ing down everything,” he says.To access assistance faster patients

should bring their hospital cards andchronic patients can bring their medica-tion packages so that the nurses can taketheir details.“Our most vital service has been inter-

rupted by these perpetrators andwe hopethey will be caught and brought to book,”he says.Monique Johnstone health department

communicationsofficer confirmed the in-

cident.“We can confirm that the incident took

place andwas detectedwhen staff arrivedfor duty. Both clients and staff were af-fected by the incident; however, the facili-ty manager engaged with the clients andreassured them of services that will berendered.“Services continued as normal in the

unaffected area at the facility. Staff couldnot access patients’ folders via the com-puters due to the damage and theft andtherefore had to assist clients manuallywhich impacted waiting times,” saysJohnson.Kensington police are currently inves-

tigating the matter

Volunteers wantedTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

Kensington Old Age Home is appealingfor physiotherapists and social work-

ers to volunteer and help with the resi-dents at the home.

With about 90 patients at the home, their wish is to have volunteers as oftenas possible to help cheer up residentsand keep them active.

Some of the residents have had severalstrokes and require the assistance of aphysiotherapist.

Although the home is for the elderly, care is also given to those who are young-er but have special needs and cannot becared for by their families.

Because many residents experiencedrastic changes when moving into thehome, they are in need of counselling toassist them in dealing with thesechanges.

These needs have prompted the hometo call for volunteers who can assist theresidents - either through specialisedservices or simply by providing compa-

ny to the residents.Board member, Helen Major, believes

that the additional care provided by vol-unteers will assist those in wheelchairsto be able to walk around and do thingsfor themselves.

“We are appealing those that can vol-unteer and help with therapy and coun-selling at the home because we believewhen the residents receive that they willbe able to do things for themselves,” shesays.

“Some have to be in nappies becausetheir limbs are not working but if theyget the necessary help they will be ableto walk around and even go to the toiletfor themselves.”

Major says it’s extremely important tohave exercise that’s why they are plead-ing for volunteers who can offer their ex-pertise to help the elderly.

“It really helps with the mindset.Much of the time they spend their dayssitting doing nothing which really im-pacts badly on their health. We do try tohave activities for them but that is notenough,” she adds.

A volunteer helpscuts a resident'snails at theKensington Old AgeHome. Morevolunteers areneeded.

JOSEPH PILLAY

With the aim of reintroduc-ing provincial soccer at lo-cal soccer association level

and to develop amateur soccer inthe region, the Goodwill tourna-ment is about to showcase thewealth of talent across the country. The Cape district will be hosting

the tournament for the secondtime. It takes place at the WilliamHerbert sports complex fromThursday to Saturday.According to Iqbal Kasker, this

year’s tournament coordinator, the advent of unification and theera of professional soccer have toa certain extent taken its toll onamateur soccer in the country.“Gone are the dayswhen the sea-

son’s climax was the annual inter-provincial tournament which allplayers, administrators and spec-tators looked forward to,” he says. The selection and awarding of

provincial colours to players whoperformedwell throughout the sea-son was a treasured experience toaspire to, he says, as he recalls fondmemories fostered through friend-ly rivalries forged through theyears.“One only needs to reflect on the

existing tournaments still beingrunby codes likehockey towitnessa level of rivalry, competitivenessand camaraderie that most of ouryoung players (if not all) have not

yet experienced,” Kasker says. One of the custodians of amateur

soccer in the country, the North-ern Areas Football Association(formerly Eastern Province SoccerBoard) created the tournament torekindle the interprovincial tour-nament.Since the Safa regions cannot ca-

ter for all their players, whilst theydid introduce interprovincialgames for certain divisions, it wasfelt that the local associationsshould do something themselves. The interprovincial Goodwill lo-

cal soccer associations tourna-ment was launched at the head-quarters of the Cape District in2007.The first tournament, in Port

Elizabeth in 2008, was won byMitchell’s Plain. The Cape Districtwon the inaugural u.15 title.U.11, u.13, u.15, u.17 and senior

teams will compete in the tourna-ment, which starts at 09:00 on allthree days. The eight local associations have

been divided into two sections.
