Past AIP funding
• Accelerator Improvement Project (AIP) funding as proposed by the PEP-II staff over the years in order to increase the luminosity to remain competitive was about 7000 k$ per year.
• Actual AIP funding for past years:– FY99 = 3715 k$– FY00 = 5800 k$– FY01 = 6188 k$– FY02 = 7100 k$– FY03 = 3300 k$

AIP funding has driven PEP-II luminosity increases!

SLAC AIP Changes between Funding Plans
• The SLAC Field Task Proposal (April 2004) used the following funding profile for AIP: FY05-FY09: 8M$, 8M$, 7M$, 6M$, 6M$.
• The Lehman review proposed AIP funding profile for the “Base 2%” case (June 2004) : FY05-FY09: 6M$, 6M$, 6M$, 6M$, 6M$.
• The Lehman review proposed AIP funding profile for the “Flat-Flat” case (June 2004): FY05-FY09: 6M$, 6M$, 5M$, 4 M$, 3 M$.
• The details of these three cases are shown below.

Changes in AIP Work Scope
• To get from the Field Task Proposal to the Lehman “Base 2%” case:– One PEP-II RF station was delayed from 2005
to 2006 installation.– The bunch shortening cavities in the HER were
eliminated. (Reduces the PEP-II overall peak luminosity from 2.4E34 to about 2.2E34.)
– Some PEP-II vacuum work was delayed which delays achievement of the ultimate peak luminosity.
– Some non-PEP-II work was delayed.

Further changes in AIP Scope
• To get from the Lehman “Base 2%” case to the Lehman “Flat-Flat” case:– Some PEP-II vacuum work was delayed by a
year from 2007 to 2008.– Some PEP-II magnet, feedback, and diagnostic
work was delayed from 2007 to 2008.– Many non-PEP-II items were delayed.
• It is assumed that the early year PEP-II upgrades and people are “protected” except for the above.

Integrated PEP-II Luminosity• The PEP-II integrated luminosity for each of the three AIP
funding profiles was calculated month by month including the expected down times, turn-on schedules, and anticipated peak luminosities.
• The peak luminosity for each year was determined by the available installed hardware.
• A listing of the integrated luminosity by year is shown in the table below.
• These projections assume that the PEP-II staff for operation, maintenance, engineering, and construction remain at current levels.
• In summary: The “Base 2%” case reduces the overall integrated luminosity by about 8% compared to the Field Task Proposal and the “Flat-Flat” case an additional 2%.

Conclusions
• AIP projects have provided the hardware opportunities to successfully increase the luminosity in PEP-II over the past years.
• Future AIP project money is important for continued luminosity improvement of PEP-II.
• With potential future reductions in the AIP funding, accelerator projects (and the associated luminosity gains) will likely be delayed to later years.
