ADOPT TWO FELINES FOR PRICE OF ONE

Adopting a furry feline friend for life just got twice as nice due to special adoption fees for cats and kittens approved by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. Through September 30, residents will be able to adopt two cats at the single adoption fee of $74.95. “Felines usually breed during the spring and summer months, so it is not unusual for us to receive a high number of mother cats and kittens during this time of year,” said Lisa Mendheim, public education coordinator, Broward Co. Animal Care & Adoption. The adoption fee for both cats includes a health exam, vaccinations, feline leukemia/AIDS test and spaying or neutering. Each cat will also receive a Broward Co. pet license. Visit the Broward County Animal Care & Adoption Center, 1870 SW 39th St., Fort Lauderdale. Adoption hours are Tues–Fri, 1–6pm, and Sat & Sun, 11am–4pm. It’s September and school started a week ago. We’ve been taunted by two hurricanes and Irene is still out there deciding which way to go, but it looks like So Fla will be spared this time, so I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed that she floats on by. Now that we don’t have to worry about the weather, let’s think about partying. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there has been a plethora of new indoor playrooms springing up all around the city. They are filled with inflatables and fun activities and snacks and you and the kiddies can spend hours at a birthday party in an air-conditioned space filled with joyful shouts, music and laughter. Movie reviews for you and your family

REEL LIFE WITH JANE

A secret moon mission, a chick-flick adaptation, and The Lion King

(in 3D!) are headed to the big screen this month. Here’s a sneak peek at

what’s new in theaters and on DVD/Blu-ray in September.— by Jane Louise Boursaw

APOLLO 18Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 9/2. Ok for kids 13+.

Pop quiz! Apollo 17, which launched in December 1972, was the last official manned mission to the moon, but did you know there was one more after that? I didn’t either! Apparently, in December 1974, two American astronauts were

sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. What they got was actual footage that reveals exactly why we never went back. Sure, NASA denies its authenticity, but others say it’s the real deal. The truth is out there, and I’m a sucker for sci-fi space movies. This one looks fun, frightening, and mysterious [cue Twilight Zone music].

One Reel – Pathetic. Even The Force can’t save it.

Two Reels – Tolerable. Coulda been a contender.

Three Reels – Thought-provoking. Something to talk about.

Four Reels – You want the truth? Great flick!

Five Reels – Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.

I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT

Not yet rated; likely PG-13. In theaters 9/16. Ok for kids 13+.

Book adaptations don’t always translate well to the big screen (no one but me seemed to like Julie & Julie, Eat Pray Love or The Nanny Diaries), but I have high hopes for this one, partly because I adore Greg Kinnear. Based on the book by Allison

Pearson, this movie stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Kate Reddy, a Boston-based financial executive who goes home each night to her adoring, recently-downsized architect husband Richard (Kinnear) and their two kids. It’s the same juggling act that Kate’s BFF and fellow working mom Allison (Christina Hendricks) performs on a daily basis. It’s also one that Kate’s child-phobic associate Momo (Olivia Munn) intends to avoid. When Kate scores a major account requiring frequent trips to New York, Richard also wins the new job he’s been hoping for. Things get complicated when Kate’s charming new business associate Jack (Pierce Brosnan) proves a little too tempting to the working mom.

MOVIES in September

THE LION KING 3DRated G. In theaters 9/16. Ok for kids 5+.

If your kids weren’t born yet when The Lion King hit theaters in 1994, here’s their chance to see the Oscar-winning film on the big screen in 3D. When a young lion prince named Simba (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is born in Africa, it leaves

his uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) second in line to the throne. Scar plots with the hyenas to kill King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Prince Simba, thus making himself King. But when the King is killed, Scar convinces Simba it was his fault, and the young lion flees the kingdom in shame. After years of exile, he’s persuaded to return home to overthrow the usurper and claim the kingdom as his own, thus completing the Circle of Life. A special two-week theatrical extravaganza kicks off Sept. 16, followed by a Diamond Edition DVD/Blu-ray release on Oct. 4. Hakuna Matata!

DOLPHIN TALE 3DPG for some mild thematic elements. In theaters 9/23 (2D, 3D). Ok for kids 7+.

What could have been a typical family movie about an ocean creature in peril is elevated by a cast that includes Hollywood royalty Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson. It’s also based on the true story of a brave dolphin

whose tail is severely damaged after being caught in a crab trap. Rescued and transported to a marine hospital, Winter the dolphin is nurtured back to health by a dedicated marine biologist (Harry Connick, Jr.), a brilliant prosthetics doctor (Freeman), and a young boy (Nathan Gamble) whose dedication not only helps Winter, but also scores of people around the world.

SCOOBY-DOO! LEGEND OF THE PHANTOSAURNot rated. On DVD/Blu-ray 9/6. Ok for kids 4+.

Who doesn’t love Scooby-Doo? The loveable mutt is back with a new adventure that starts with a relaxing spa getaway for Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne. But things take a strange turn when the gang uncovers a frightening Phantosaur, a ghostly dinosaur that’s protecting hidden treasures buried in secret desert caves. The gang sets out to investigate the prehistoric haunting, and uncovers various colorful suspects, including a free-wheeling motorcycle gang, greedy corporate investors and over-zealous scientists. Will the perennially teenage sleuths piece things together and solve the mystery? Sure, we know the answer, but it’s still a must-see for any Scooby fan. Bonus features include Nick Palatas (Shaggy) searching for dinosaur clues at the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASSPG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some sexual content including brief partial nudity and

language. On DVD/Blu-ray 9/9.

If you’re curious about the beginnings of the X-Men, here’s your chance to catch up. This movie harks back to the early friendship of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) before they took the names Professor X and Magneto. They’re the closest of friends, discovering their powers and working with other mutants to prevent nuclear Armageddon. But a grave rift opens between them, spurring the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. Read my full review at www.reellifewithjane.com

Play Together: Up Up And AwayJust how far will your individuality carry you?

You will need:• Balloons (1 per person)

• Music

Players should sit in a circle on the floor with their balloons in their laps. Choose someone to be “it”; he or she should stand in the middle of the circle. Someone else should be able to start and stop the music. When the music begins, “it” should begin tossing the balloon into the air and keeping it afloat. Don’t let it hit the ground! When the music stops, “it” calls out the name of another player who joins him or her in the middle. The new “it” now must keep both balloons in the air while the music plays and the first player sits down. Continue playing until everyone has had at least two chances to be “it.” Point out that you should always look for ways your uniqueness can carry you “up and up and up” – just like that special flying elephant!

DVD Film Fun

Your little “ginger” has endured red-head jokes, taunts and jeers since kindergarten. Those adorable red curls you love are the very feature she despises. Your efforts to change the way she views her hair have been a failure. So the start of a new school year prompts the old familiar fears – for you and your daughter. But a new teacher changes everything. Your daughter’s classroom teacher is everybody’s favorite – and she’s a ginger, too! When she points out that she and your daughter share that special trait, your daughter’s classmates are just a tiny bit jealous. The teasing stops, and your daughter learns that “the thing that brings you down can carry you up and up and up!” That’s exactly what Timothy Mouse points out to his dejected friend Dumbo in the classic Disney animated film. Available this month on Blu-ray and DVD is Dumbo: The 70th Anniversary Edition, complete with special features, interactive games and more. Watch it with your children and then discuss its poignant story using our Talk Together points. Later you can play “Up, Up and Away!” with our Play Together game. In Dumbo, Mrs. Jumbo the elephant is thrilled when her little bundle of joy arrives via stork. But when his oversized ears unfurl, the other circus elephants make some cruel comments. At the circus, a mean boy taunts Dumbo and even tries to drag him away. That’s when Mrs. Jumbo steps in to defend her baby. The crowd runs screaming from the tent and Mrs. Jumbo is chained and labeled a “mad elephant.” Dumbo is all alone when Timothy Mouse befriends him. Together, they discover that

Dumbo can use his large ears to fly! With Timothy’s help, he becomes the star of the circus, earning his own private train car and freedom for his mother. He learns that what makes him different also makes him special – in so many wonderful ways!

Talk TogetherMrs. Jumbo loves her new baby from the start. How do you think she feels when she sees Dumbo’s big ears? Why do the other elephants make fun of him? Why does Mrs. Jumbo react to them the way that she does? Dumbo thinks the boys who are teasing him are just playing. When does he get scared of them? Why does his mother respond so violently? At first, Dumbo is not ashamed of his ears. When does he realize he is different? How does he feel about his ears? Everybody has something that makes you unique. What makes you special? For instance, it could be your red hair or your sense of humor or your beautiful singing voice. Why does Timothy Mouse become friends with Dumbo? What does he do to help Dumbo cope with being away from his mother? What makes Timothy a good friend?

HEALTHY!?!

SUMMERTIME IS A WONDERLAND OF FOODS AT THEIR PEAK SO GET OUT AND ENJOY THE HEAT WITH A FLAVORFUL BITE TO EAT. GO TO WWW.FAMILYMAGAZINE.BIZ AND CLICK ON THE RESTAURANT MOM WHICH WILL TAKE YOU TO THE BLOG AT

MYKIDSPLATE.COM TO WRITE A REVIEW IF YOUR EXPECTATIONS THEY DID NOT MEET.

In 2007 when I first started asking parents, especially moms, what was important to them when they went out to eat with their kids, ‘healthy menu options for my kids’ was one of the thirty attributes important to them. Although it has bouncing around positions 13 through 15 in the past 2 years, that hot button has moved up into the top ten, currently in position #7. Is there really a shift in our mindset? Do we want restaurants to offer healthier menu items or do we

indulge when we go out to eat? This mom would say it’s a combination of both, with the recognition that we don’t eat out more often because there’s not enough healthy stuff out there – that to get healthier foods to eat, we have to buy them at a grocery store and eat them at home. Two initiatives were recently rolled out by two well-known organizations; the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Restaurant Association (NRA) both aimed at healthier eating for kids.

ChooseMyPlate.gov (USDA)The goal of the USDA was ultimately to simplify the traditional food pyramid. They did so by summarizing the daily nutritional requirements into a plate with key messages: make half your plate fruits and vegetables, at least half your grains whole grains, the remaining quarter portion of the plate for proteins, and switch to fat free or 1% low-fat milk products. ChooseMyPlate.gov

Kids Live Well (NRA)The National Restaurant Association launched the Kids LiveWell program in

collaboration with Healthy Dining to help parents and children select healthful menu options when dining out. Restaurants that participate in the voluntary program commit to offering healthful meal items for children, with a particular focus on increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium.HealthyDiningFinder.com/kids_livewell

So it begs the question – who’s driving the healthy dining bus? Is it the parents or other organizations? But at the end of the day, does it really matter? A separate study done by NPD Group last year said that 70% of consumers choose indulgent items when they eat out; that although they intended to choose a ‘healthier’ item before they went to the restaurant that when it came right down to it, when they got there they chose the more indulgent item. Is that what we are doing with our kids too? Are we telling them on the way to the restaurant that they have to choose something healthier and then we let them pick the fried items when the server comes? The USDA and NRA providing tools for parents to make healthier choices are definitely steps in the right direction. However, the reality is that kids need to eventually learn to make those choices on their own and will even eat healthier if they realize that they made the decision. They need strong direction, lots of experimentation with new tastes and flavors, and encouragement from parents and other adults in their life to make the right decision.

The Cazuela That The Farm Maiden Stirred

by Samantha R. Vamos, illustrated by Rafael López.

A bilingual adaptation of the familiar “House That Jack Built,” author Vamos “cooked” up this yummy version in her kitchen. Using ingredients for rice pudding (Arroz con Leche), this scrumptious communal concoction is a favorite for many, whether or not it’s part of a family’s

history. In this cumulative tale, the repetition is highlighted in Spanish as a sweet repetition of the English translation, announcing the ingredient as it’s added to the pot (cazuela). Rose and golden acrylics characterize the double page spreads in this vivid picture book, emphasizing the sunlit radiance of a Central American daytime. Each animal makes an important contribution, and is given prominence as they prepare ingredients, and add to the music while the pudding is cooking. This is in distinctive contrast to the animals in another familiar folktale –The Little Red Hen – where the main character invites several others to participate, and each time is rejected. Award winning artist López once again furnishes an experience of fiesta, harmonizing text and illustration, in a tale well suited to community celebration. Back matter includes recipe and glossary of Spanish words. Charlesbridge, $17.95, Ages 5-8

A Mango in the Hand: A Story Told Through Proverbs

by Antonio Sacre, illustrated by Sebastia Serra. When Francisco wakes on the morning of his saint day, his father approves him as old enough to go alone for the first time to pick his favorite fruit, mangos, for Francisco’s contribution to the family feast. Excited, the young boy discovers this initially delightful task is not as easy as he expected. The pencil and ink illustrations use a digital infusion of color to support the folkloric sensibilities of this

story. Artist Serra, who lives in Spain, makes use of important details, such as a soccer ball, guitar, dominos, chilies and hats to create a Latino setting. He also includes common elements of daily life like a swing set, cats, flowers and bicycles, making important use of background features to amplify the text. Author Sacre’s storytelling skills sparkle in his use of Spanish language proverbs that glow with humor and universal appeal as Francisco is distracted by bees and family members in his attempts to bring the mangos home. Making adept use of English to carry the proverbs, this delightful tale infuses family relationships, problem solving, and independent thinking into an absorbing story of love and acceptance. A glossary of Spanish words and phrases is included at the back. Abrams, $16.95, Ages 5-8

No More, Por Favor by Susan Middleton Elya, illustrated by David Walker. The rainforest – selva -- is filled with wonderful, tasty things to eat. It’s also full of baby animals deciding they are fed up with the usual. Author Elya’s rhymes tell an amusing story of picky eaters and parents who fix a fiesta to change things up. With glossary and pronunciation guide at the beginning, adults who read aloud to the youngest children will introduce their listeners to a lilting combination of English and Spanish language.

Large double page spreads with bright and pastel acrylics illustrate some of the Spanish words, making it easy for non-Spanish speakers to infer meaning. Elya makes wise use of rhymes; matching only English words together, and only Spanish words together (with a single exception, finito, an Italian word, matched with the Spanish, Quetzalito). This humorous take on a frequent family problem will tickle grownups and entertain even the most finicky of youngsters. G. P. Putnam’s Sons, $16.99, Ages 3-5

Welcome to my Neighborhood! A Barrio A-B-C

by Quiara Alegría Hudes, illustrated by Shino Arihara.

Without glamorizing inner city problems, this engaging alphabet book, opens cultural doors for readers with descriptive rhyming language (“G is for graffiti right beside the subway grate. H is for the hoop. It used to be a crate.”).

Creating a panorama of authentic urban neighborhood life – “M is for los muralistas” – the dynamic language mix of English and occasional Spanish words, pairs seamlessly with active realistic gouache paintings. Pastel highlights add energy and build interest from start to finish. Scholastic, $16.99, Ages 4-7

Good-bye, Havana! Hola, New York! By Edie Cólon, illustrated by Raúl Colón. Just published, this thoughtful, tender reminiscence is based on the author’s childhood in Cuba, and enhanced by her acclaimed, Puerto Rico-born, illustrator husband’s “memorable” paintings. With watercolor, colored pencils and lithograph pencils, artist Cólon evokes an earlier

era, using sepia tones in backlit paintings, and featuring clothing, house and school furnishings, hairstyles, and even eyeglasses, notable for the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Author and elementary teacher Cólon writes with an easy mix of English and Spanish, sharing her carefully crafted story of growing up in two cultures. This beautiful picture book blends text and illustration in a seemingly effortless partnership, to bring this sensitive story to young readers and listeners. An Author’s Note and a brief dictionary of Spanish words are located at the end. Simon & Schuster, $16.99, Ages 4-8

For the month between September 15 and October 15, Latinos, especially those whose family roots are in Central and South American countries, take time to honor their ancestry by paying tribute to those whose passion and commitment secured liberty, equality and self-government as a legacy for future generations. Teaching Your Child

AccountabilityBy Dr. Raymond J. Huntington

Dr. Raymond J. Huntington and Eileen Huntington are co-founders of Huntington Learning Center, which has helped children achieve success in school for 30 years. For more information about how Huntington can help your child, call 1 800 CAN LEARN. www.huntingtonlearning.com

“It’s time for you to start being more responsible.”

If you’ve ever heard yourself saying these words to your child, you’ve likely reached the stage where you feel he or she needs to take ownership of his or her decisions and the consequences that result from those decisions. As your child moves from childhood to adolescence, it is important to gradually give him or her more responsibilities, but more than that, it is important to teach children that they—not their parents or anyone else—are accountable for their actions. How can you encourage your child to practice accountability in his or her daily life? What are the benefits of doing so? Here are several things to know about raising an accountable child. Children need a little freedom to make choices. When your child was very young, you likely made most of his or her decisions. However, as your child grows older, give him or her opportunities to make choices, even if you are afraid he or she might make a wrong choice (or different choice than you might make). Children who are empowered learn to think on their own and take initiative. Empowerment is an important part of accountability. Children need the skills to weigh different decisions. It’s difficult to teach your child to be accountable without giving him or her the tools to navigate problems that may come his or her way. Teach your child to carefully consider the various facets of any decision and to weigh pros and cons of all sides. And when your child makes mistakes, teach him or her to evaluate how things went wrong in his or her decision-making process. What would he or she do differently, looking back? How will lessons learned impact future decisions? Parents cause more harm than good by removing children from difficult situations. No parent likes seeing his or her child struggle, but while fixing your child’s problems may make you feel better, it has negative consequences for your child. Long-term repercussions can include diminished self-esteem, an inability to cope with even the smallest of failures, and the belief that mom and dad will forever be there to right the wrongs. The best thing you can do for your child is help him or her learn to solve problems on his or her own, which will give him or her the confidence—and the resourcefulness—to overcome challenges. Parents should model good behavior. Do you blame others for your mistakes? Do you ever act helpless or passive instead of proactive? If you find a flaw in yourself, do you ignore it? If you truly want your child to learn accountability and become responsible for him or herself, you must practice what you preach. Be sure your child sees you striving to be a responsible person each day, owning up to your mistakes, and asking for help when you need it. Accountability is one of the building blocks for success. Teaching your child to be accountable will result in numerous long-term benefits—he or she will be a more confident, positive person who feels in control of his or her own life. Develop your child’s sense of accountability and watch him or her become a more prideful, engaged student and person of character.
