Before reading…

The lack of one database makes it difficult to have consistent figures: the following slides come from different sources for different sectors and consequently do not show comparable indicators. A project for a national observatory/database for the performing arts is currently being considered by the Ministry of Culture and social partners.

In France, different levels of public authorities (state, regions, departments, communes, municipalities) have different prerogatives for supporting the performing arts. Financing is often mixed, making it hard to have a complete overview of public funding.

The figures in Slides 3-6 do not account for organizations that depend directly on a public authority and whose employees have the status of civil servants.

The figures in Slides 7-12 represent only certain organizations that receive funding from the state-level (Ministry of Culture) and are not exhaustive. The data also excludes a whole portion of subsidized performing arts that is not funded by the state, but that is funded by other public authorities.

For the purposes of this presentation, certain sectors of the performing arts have not been included – it is a selection rather than a comprehensive portrait of the sector.

Conclusion: please read the following with caution!
