The Perinatal Foundation recognized the exemplary service of outgoing President, Carol Browning, MD, by hosting a reception in her honor on April 21, 2013, at the Country Springs Hotel in Pewaukee. The event, held during the WAPC Annual Statewide Conference, was a successful fundraiser, with nearly $5,000 in contributions. The tribute was a huge success in terms of not only fundraising, but also great participation, food, entertainment, and camaraderie. Sixty-five people attended the event, many of whom took to the microphone with prepared and “off the cuff” presentations about the important influence Carol had and continues to have on their lives and on the long-term success of both the Perinatal Foundation and WAPC. Some highlights of the evening included a video message sent by Tania Riske, a previous Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship recipient from UW-Eau Claire. In the video, Tania and her two children spoke with heartfelt sincerity about the importance of the scholarship in their lives. WAPC staff member, Eva Fassbinder Brummel, created a picture slide show set to music about Carol’s contributions to the Foundation and WAPC throughout the years. At Carol’s request, the contributions generated by this event will be used to expand the Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship. Over the past 19 years, the scholarships to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UW-EC), University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), and Madison College (MATC) supported 47 college students and 64 young children. The scholarships underwrite the cost of childcare expenses for students pursuing careers in the health care field. You can help make Carol’s vision of expanding the Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship a reality. The tribute event was merely a jump start to fund this scholarship program. Dear Friends,

Much has been happening at the Perinatal Foundation since we last reported to you. We changed to a new investment manager and custodian of the Foundation funds. With the guidance of the Finance Committee, we finalized an investment policy statement outlining our investment objectives, targets, roles, and responsibilities, as well as monitoring and controls for our investments.

Our major sources of funding continue to be the Silent Auction and Raffle that are held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care (WAPC) Annual Statewide Conference and direct appeals through the newsletters, the Annual Report, as well as the year-end electronic YouTube appeal.

The 2013 WAPC conference was held in Waukesha on April 21-23. Carol Browning, our immediate past-president, was honored at a reception acknowledging her four decades of service to the Perinatal Foundation and WAPC. The event was also a fundraiser for the Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship Fund, a special interest of Dr. Browning’s. The Scholarship Fund underwrites childcare expenses for students in a health-related field at three Wisconsin colleges-University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Madison College. Future directions for the scholarship include expanding to a fourth school.

Debra Selip, MD, the 2013 Thomas A. Leonard, MD, Memorial lecturer, presented “The Late Preterm and Early Term Brain: Physiology, Pathology and Outcomes”. The presentation was preceded by a moving video produced by Eva Fassbinder Brummel describing our history, programs, and accomplishments to familiarize the audience with the Foundation and the reciprocal relationship between the Foundation and WAPC.

The 2013 Silent Auction was a tremendous success raising $10,425. Many thanks to Leone Hinzman and Amanda Leipold for the donation of a one-week stay in a villa in Tuscany. The 2013 Raffle, initiated five years ago, was also a success with over $3,300 raised. The income from the Silent Auction and Raffle were the highest reported since inception of these fundraisers. (See related story on page 9.)

The Resource Development Committee recently met under the direction of Amanda Leipold. (See related story on page 8.)

Web site development continues through 2013, with grant funding from the Foundation. The new Web site, which serves both the Perinatal Foundation and WAPC, will focus on learning with access to on-line education 24/7. Foundation grants for WAPC Webinars provide national exposure for both organizations. For example, WAPC hosted the Webinar, “Assessment of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome: Tools for Newborn Nursery Staff” on July 24. Over 100 learners from 11 states participated.

Looking ahead-Other opportunities to support the work of the Perinatal Foundation2013 - year-end appeal2014 - 20th anniversary of the Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship2014 - WAPC Annual Meeting, April 27-29.

Again, dear friends, the success of the Foundation is not possible without you. The funding generated from your support of the Silent Auction, Raffle, Myrtle Bahm Leonard Memorial Scholarship Fund, and other appeals, supports the work of the Foundation and healthier mothers, babies, and families.

With deep appreciation,

4 Perinatal Foundation Newsletter

Dr. Fredrik Broekhuizen (a.k.a. “Frits”) is no stranger to the Perinatal Foundation or to WAPC. He has a long history as a supporter of the Foundation and its mission to improve the health of mothers and babies in Wisconsin and served as WAPC President from 1988-89. In April 2013, the Perinatal Foundation welcomed Dr. Broekhuizen to the Board of Directors.

Considered by many to be one of the foremost leaders in the field of maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Broekhuizen is a practicing academic obstetrician at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he cares for high-risk patients with many medical complications. He attended medical school in the Netherlands and did his obstetrics and gynecology training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Broekhuizen is a passionate public health advocate, with a great interest in cervical cancer prevention and family planning. He also works on issues such as, preventing preterm birth, preventing maternal mortality, and addressing the gaps in perinatal outcomes caused by socio-economic disadvantage. Frits works on these issues throughout the world, having practiced in 35 countries. He just returned from a trip to Ethiopia where he was working on cervical cancer prevention.

One could say that Frits has “done it all.” However, one of the few things he has not yet done is serve a term as a member of the Perinatal Foundation Board of Directors. During his term, Frits would like to help the Foundation increase its fundraising efforts and do more public advocacy. We are honored to have him as a director and look forward to his service!

Jennifer Hennessy, JD, MBA, is a health care attorney with Quarles & Brady, LLP, in Madison. Jennifer is an Iowa native, earning her undergraduate, law, and Masters of Business Administration degrees from the University of Iowa. Jennifer works with former director, Sarah Coyne, JD, who introduced Jennifer to the Foundation and its work.

When Jennifer learned of an opening on the Perinatal Foundation Board, she jumped at the opportunity. Jennifer is passionate about women’s health issues, with a specific interest in postpartum depression education, making Foundation Board service a perfect fit. As an aunt to 13 nieces and nephews, Jennifer knows the vital role that educational resources and a community support system play in both the physical and mental well-being of women in the perinatal period.

During her term, Jennifer anticipates being involved in perinatal mental health issues, as well as, public awareness of the Foundation’s work. We are honored to have Jennifer as a member of the Board. Welcome, Jennifer!

Thank you, Madeline, for your community spirit and donation of time to the Perinatal Foundation! On June 6, Madeline Ebert, daughter of director Ann Ebert, got her summer vacation off to a grand start by donating over five hours of her time to the Perinatal Foundation. The Foundation had a number of printed materials about prenatal and postpartum depression that needed updating with the Foundation’s new contact information. Madeline pasted over 500 labels to three different sets of materials.

THANK YOU TO MADELINE EBERT

THREE COMMITTEES POOL TALENT FOR MAJOR EVENT

8 Perinatal Foundation Newsletter

The Foundation’s Resource Development, Finance, and Program Committees are collaborating to plan a major fundraising event in 2014. Watch your mail and email for details about the event as it develops.

Under the leadership of Chairperson Amanda Leipold, Esq., the Resource Development Committee met on July 11. Additional members of the committee are Jennifer Hennessy, Frits Broekhuizen, and Jon Goldstein. (See related stories for introductions to the new directors, Jennifer Hennessy and Frits Broekhuizen on pages 4 and 5.) Chris Van Mullem, Perinatal Foundation president, also participated in the meeting.

The charge of the Resource Development Committee is to increase the Foundation’s assets through contributed resources. The July meeting agenda was ambitious—get to know one another by sharing an example of a previous fundraising experience, set short and long-term goals, brainstorm possible fundraising initiatives, and move forward with a plan.

After an energetic two-and-a-half hours, the committee agreed to focus on an event in 2014. It will involve food, fun, and a focus on the work of the Foundation. The committee’s analysis is that the Foundation is in a strong position because of its resources—a large network of donors connected by strong relationships with a common cause of healthy mothers, babies, and families.

The Finance Committee, under the leadership of Chairperson, Jon Goldstein, met on July 18. The Committee reviewed finances and discussed the fundraiser, concluding that the time was right to reach out to a broad audience of those concerned about the health of women and babies, in particular, well-established professionals and young professionals beginning their careers.

Finally, on July 31, under the leadership of Chairperson Phillip Nielsen, MSW, the Program Committee met. The Committee has the responsibility to establish and implement a program to meet the Foundation’s mission, providing broad impact and visibility for the Foundation. The Committee considered a number of speakers who would have broad appeal to a diverse audience and set priorities. Staff is contacting possible speakers.

A few weeks matter…big time. That was the conclusion Debra Selip, MD, left with a captivated audience attending the Thomas A. Leonard, MD, Memorial Lecture at the 2013 WAPC Annual Statewide Conference in Waukesha on April 23, 2013. In her presentation, “The Late Preterm and Early Term Brain: Physiology, Pathology, and Outcomes,” Dr. Selip noted that preterm birth, even as late as 35 to 36 6/7 weeks, disrupts

normal brain development and connectivity within and between brain regions that are important for movement, sensation, hearing, vision, and language.

Brain development occurs throughout pregnancy. Premature birth, the circumstances surrounding birth, and the postnatal course for the infant have the potential to

interrupt normal brain development and result in deficits in intelligence and executive function, as well as impairments in attention, language, and academic achievement. The bottom line is that the best place for an infant’s brain to develop is in utero.

Dr. Selip is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Section of Neonatology, and the Pediatric Medical Director in the Fetal and Neonatal Medicine Center, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. She has done research on injury to the preterm brain.

The Perinatal Foundation established the Thomas A. Leonard, MD, Memorial Lecture in 1989 following Dr. Leonard’s death as a memorial to him and his contributions to the Perinatal Foundation and WAPC. The WAPC Annual Statewide Conference Planning Committee selects speakers and topics that are a fitting memorial to Dr. Leonard.

2013 SILENT AUCTION & RAFFLE

One Week in Tuscany…

This year’s Silent Auction featured the unique opportunity to bid on one-week accommodations for four people in one of five Casas in Manciano, Italy. Manciano, an ancient hill town in the Tuscany region, is known for its Sienese-styled fortress. At the end of the auction, Amy Falkenberg, MD, a family practitioner from Memorial Health Center in Medford, was able to start making plans for a dream vacation in Italy!

The item was donated by Leone Hinzman and is available only through charity events. Special thanks go to Foundation director, Amanda Leipold, who provided information about the opportunity to the Auction planners.

His obituary noted that he enjoyed memberships in many professional organizations, including the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care.

Dr. Martin and his wife, Barbara, are long-time supporters of the Perinatal Foundation. In his honor, the Continental Gynecological Society, another organization to which he belonged, made a contribution to the Perinatal Foundation in his memory.

There is the belief in fundraising circles that giving occurs in the context of a relationship formed around a mutual interest. We at the Perinatal Foundation feel gratitude for our relationship with Dr. Martin and for his contributions to perinatal health, for his commitment to both WAPC and the Perinatal Foundation, and to Mrs. Martin for suggesting that his colleagues from the Continental Gynecological Society make a contribution to the Perinatal Foundation in his memory.
