POST DOCTORAL

RESEARCH STAFF

MEMBER

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, locatedin the San Francisco Bay Area, is seeking five Postdoc-toral Research Staff Members.

Two openings require recent PhD's in cell biology, hematology, immunology, molecular biology or relatedareas. Individuals will participate in a multidisciplinaryeffort to separate fetal cells from maternal blood usingfluorescence activated cell sorting, determine the fre-quency of fetal cells in maternal blood and applyfluorescence in situ hybridization with chromosome-specific probes and image analysis to detectcytogenetic abnormalities.

Two openings require recent PhD's in molecularbiology, biochemistry, or related areas. Experience inrecombinant DNA techniques as applied to cloningmammalian DNA and use of cloned probes is useful. This staff member will join team efforts in the construc-tion and characterization of human chromosome-specific DNA libraries involving mass cell culture, chromosome isolation, purification by flow sorting, andcloning the DNA into large insert phage and cosmidvectors or in physical mapping studies of the humangenome. Optional parallel research will be driven bythe individual's interests and current studies on thehuman genome within the Biomedical SciencesDivision.

The fifth opening is for a candidate with a recent PhDin microbiology, having a background and strong in-terest in the molecular aspects of bacteria living in ex-treme environments. Individual will work on the isola-tion and characterization of recently discoveredbacteria in geothermal fluids. Experience in anaerobicbacteriology, genetics, and/or recombinant DNAmethodology is desirable.

We offer a highly competitive salary and benefitspackage. Send curriculum vitae: Earl G. Morrell,Employment Division, Lawrence Livermore Na-tional Laboratory, P.O. Box 5510, Dept KSC73702B,Livermore, CA 94550.

DEVELOPMENTAL THERAPEUTICSPROGRAM (DTP)

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI)NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH)

The NCI is actively seeking an individual to manage anew initiative in preclinical AIDS-antiviral drug evalu-ations. In the NCI's Developmental Therapeutics Pro-gram's extramural component, a new organization isbeing created to provide a specific focus for develop-ment and operation of a national AIDS-antiviral drugscreening program. Activities will encompass the de-velopment and application both of human host-cellbased anti-HIV models and of specific biochemical/molecular target directed screens. Highly automatedtechnologies will be adapted to achieve a testing capac-ity in excess of 10,000 substances per year. Sources ofagents for evaluation and possible development in-clude: the NIH intramural and extramural programs(grantees, contractors, drug discovery groups); othergovernment agencies; private research institutes; foun-dations; individual investigators; universities, privateindustry, and through international collaborations.

The incumbent will manage these activities and coordi-nate these functions closely with those of the otherDTP branches/laboratories as required. He/she willserve as chairperson or member of key committeesencompassing the major executive decision making re-sponsibilities for the AIDS preclinical drug develop-ment program.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. withrelevant training (Pharmacologist, Biologist, Microbiol-ogist, Chemist, Medical Officer, etc.) with experiencein antiviral drug research and development or closelyrelated fields. Specific experience in retrovirology anddevelopment and applications of antiviral drug screen-ing models and/or preclinical experimental therapeu-tics investigations would be desirable. Substantialexperience in management of complex applied technol-ogy operations in a highly interdisclipinary settingwould also be advantageous.

Proposed salary range ($45,763-$72,120) dependentupon education and experience. Interested individualsshould submit their Curriculum Vitae, bibliography, salary history, and any other relevant materials to: Dr.Michael R. Quick recovery:

Better than 95O in minutes.

Most biochemical techniques for elutingseparated samples from electrophoreticgels are frustrating.

Either they're elaborate and time con-

suming or disappointingly low in yield.Extraphor, the new electrophoretic

concentrator from LKB, is the exception.Easy-to-use Extraphor lets you extract upto six samples simultaneously, and yieldsgreater than 95% can be achieved.

Set-up time is just 10 minutes, andwaste is minimal. Extraphor uses a highly

conductive salt solution in a V-shapedchannel to isolate and concentrate thenucleic acid or protein eluted from agarose

or acrylamide gel slices. SDS proteins canbe eluted by adding SDS to the high saltbuffer.

Electrophoretic extraction in a high-salt barrier is such an elegant and efficientmethod, you'll wonder why younever triedit before. To see how it's done, ask your

nearest LKB dealer for an Extraphor datasheet today.
