MEMBERSHIP REPORTPiedmont-Coastal

Section S71As of Feb 1, 2016

we have 213 members!

Welcome to another great year of membership with Piedmont Coastal section. We have 213 total mem-bers (including students) as of Feb 1, 2016. We have 51 student members. Thanks to CCCC, NCSU and North Carolina A&T State University for their support. (There were errors last month in the SPE HQ report, reporting us lower!)

I encourage every member to sign up a new member for the 2015-2016 year. Let’s all work toward increas-ing our membership. If you have changed jobs or loca-tion, please send me a note. If you have any email, employment, or phone number changes, please contact me as well.

If you have someone you feel can benefit from joining SPE, give them an application or send me their name and I will submit it to SPE and have you as the refer-ring member.

New and renewing students: There’s an option online for new and renewing students where they can select to have SPI & SPE sponsor their membership so that it won’t cost them anything. They will see the option as they go through the renew or signup process. It should be just a check box.

Newsletter:The newsletter will be posted on the main SPE web- site this year. With everyone using smartphones, it is better to download the newsletter at your conve-nience.

Note from Maury Balik - Education Committee Chair

The February 2016 meeting at NC State University marks the 21st annual Education Night for the Pied-mont-Coastal Section. This year the section donated over $6,600 in scholar-ships and grants to various institutions. Our Wonders of Plastics Essay Contest winner is Michael Li from East Chapel Hill High School. Michael’s essay, entitled “Smart Plastics, Smarter Medicine”, describes the use of tailored polymer molecules to fight cancer and was reprinted in last month’s issue of the newsletter. Michael received an iPad Mini and his teacher, Don Bryson, received a $250 check to support his activities at East Chapel Hill High School. Central Carolina Community College received $500 to support the Tool and Die Program, and an additional $1000 was donated to the Dean Wakefield Memorial Scholarship Fund. These funds will be used to provide scholarships for CCCC students Nicolas Baker and Austin Keith. Alexey Bondarev is the recipient of the $1500 SPE Senior Scholarship in the Department of Materials Sci-ence and Engineering at NC State University. The Polymers Center of Excellence in Charlotte and the Applied Technology program at North Carolina A&T each received donations of $1000 to support their efforts. Finally, $1000 was donated to SPE head-quarters to support student activities at the annual ANTEC meeting.

The Piedmont-Coastal Section congratulates the students who received these awards and wishes them well as they complete their education and pursue jobs in the plastics industry.
