Gravel Rush 2010 Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge Campaign Newsletter # 10 Mmmmmmmaaaaattte, what did you think about that? That was freakin’ amazing – what a great week!! I had a some treasured moments; like feeling a million bucks and attacking the lead group with Kim at 50 kilometres an hour (yeah, I was winning at that point); watching Anna throw down an impressive couple of turns; a thrilling pursuit with reckless abandon down the Leopold Range and making the twilight curfew with hours to spare……and that was just Day One! It just got better – every breathtaking pedal turn!! Your demonstrated courage, generous investment of time and boundless endeavour to cross the Kimberley was inspirational. The 2010 Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge was an unqualified success, borne through your participation and incredible resolve to make some profound changes in the lives of others. There were some amazing stories and I’m sure one or a thousand were shared at the end of each day with infectious excitement. Every team put in an awesome effort to join us; bringing members of their team together from across the world, around the country or from the far reaches of our enormous state; closing businesses or drawing on annual leave; snatching a precious week from family and loved ones; heady investments in new steads or a trinkling bling accessory. Whatever it took, 67 teams put their best foot forward and embraced the “It’s not a race” trek on the World famous Gibb like their own. Our volunteers were ultimately the heart of The Challenge; not only donating their precious time and effort but doing so with such understated humility. A few simple words of thanks hardly seems sufficient recompense for their wonderful contribution to our event but that’s all they would accept anyway. So to our extraordinary vollies……………THANK YOU. No matter the distances or difficulties endured, they put on a happy happy face with their shoulder to the wheel; directing frenzied activity, dishing up appetising meals, hauling food and equipment, readying an emergency medical response, keeping elaborate time journals or maintaining a measure of safety with mud hampered traffic management duties. Great job ladies and gentlemen; heroes all. We’re a disturbingly fast heart beat away from another epic edition in this amazing adventure. A week flashes by, the months blur and before we know it we’re gathering again with cocky enthusiasm for another tilt at The Gibb. The fifth Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge is planned to coincide with the 2011 Air North Kimberley Moon Experience so watch this space. It’ll change your life and the lives of others.

Heroic Contributions These gobby sprays of recognition are close to home in this wrap up edition. A special word of thanks to the members of the 2010 Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge organising committee. Our regular meetings were electric places full of enthusiastic banter and equally productive in between times as action items were ‘actioned’ and the ‘list of things to do….’ grew to terrifying levels. Invaluable contribution and unswerving support from Andrew (Dundee) Johnson, Deanne (De) Johnson, Michelle Espagne, Brian (BJ) Johnson, Vinka Bridgeman, Liz Leigh, Micheal Bear, Gwen Jones, Julie Vassiliou, Sandy Daniels and Horst Kubsch. Words from the wise? Surround yourself with dead-set bloody legends!! Thank you too to their partners and families, who like my wonderful wife Anna and my daughters Emmerson and Fayth, put up with the months upon months of disruptions; the regular meetings, the monopolised conversations and the complete immersion of The Ride into every facet of our lives. Our accommodation needs were magnificently attended to by the camping locations along The Gibb. The very generous concessions by the management and owners of these locations were some of the most significant “in kind” support our event received. I want to reiterate the heart felt appreciation for their generosity and hospitality in allowing us to use their facilities. Imitji Community and Imitji Store, Pat and Peter Lacy (Mount Elizabeth Station), Brian and Marcia Withell (Ellenbrae), Daniel Lukritz (Home Valley Station) and David Henry (El Questro) thank you all very much. They were consummate hosts; attentive, gracious, friendly, engaging and generous. Beautiful places, beautiful people. It’s hoped the beneficial partnership we enjoyed continues in 2011 and beyond, ensuring the Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge continues to build towards an iconic adventure event with World Class appeal.

Heroic Contributions II Cannot……..simply cannot offer enough words of praise for our emergency services partners St. John’s Ambulance Service (SJA) and Fire and Emergency Services Australia (FESA). SJA have been unswerving partners since the inception of The Challenge and again threw heavy support forward with an emergency medical response that included energetic paramedic personnel (Ian & Jon…..or was that Jon & Ian who would tell you they were Ian or maybe Jon?) and a kick arse 4WD ambulance that doubled as a meat wagon when ELQ dropped the catering ball. Great to see Ian back in the homelands and even better that he and Jon were available when the needs arose. In the Service of Humanity is a pretty impressive mission statement and St. John’s Ambulance certainly continue to hold true to this claim.

FESA were again significant and invaluable partners providing the logistical wizardry of BJ, a fleet of vehicle assets, swags of communication equipment and truckloads of enthusiastic personnel to run the whole shooting match. We may not have seen too much of them about camp but that was because they were flat out like a lizard drinking; setting up the repeater stations that provided the emergency communications network. Outstanding effort, thank you ladies and gentlemen. They were the very reason

our little hand held radios had the range of a million dollar system – very clever radio magic that bounced our words along that dusty and sometimes muddy track. Not surprisingly there was a fair commitment of volunteer WA Police personnel too. Help the charity that helps us – absabloodylutely. Ann was our corporate presence up front – stopping every soul on The Gibb and letting them know of the mighty peloton about to spill down upon them. Ken was our Tail-end Charlie, whipping the stragglers along and providing a further measure of traffic protection. Julie got to wear the Safety Sam tabard and walk Jill through the first of her Kimberley adventures. The acquisition of police assets didn’t go quite to plan with the freakish rains stranding the Balgo troopie in the desert. We did get to use the incredibly pristine Looma troopie and my personal favourite in the fleet, EB105. Special word of thanks to outgoing Commander Smalpage and incoming Superintendent Sutherland for their visionary leadership and progressive support of our community event………..doesn’t hurt to have a Deputy Commissioner and retired Assistant Commissioner in the dusty peloton either.

Super Duper Heroic Contributions The 2010 Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge was a wild success. There was a pretty cool idea; set on an iconic stock route; in an ancient land, during a beautiful time of the year; with energetic people fund-raising for noble charitable causes; supported by even more energetic and selfless people: An undeniably powerful mix. This event could not have materialised passed drunken banter if not for the priceless contribution of the voluntary support personnel that joined us. It was truly humbling to have been in their company. Ask; it happened. Need something done; it was half way finished. Have a need; it’s yours.

This was an incredibly energetic, vibrant and flexible group of individuals that quickly gelled into a fantastic team. Maybe our best team yet. The future success of the Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge is assured with the continued involvement of these great people. My prayers will be answered of they agree to join us next year……….here’s hoping.

Show me the MONEY…………!!! This is the pointy end. Here is the awkward silent moment summoning the courage to overcome social niceties and get down to the bottom line. The Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge is a lot of things but it’s primarily a fund raising event to assist charitable groups within our community, not least of all WA Police Legacy. If your team has an official WA Police Legacy receipt book you can deposit collected monies at any ANZ Bank, quoting BSB 016 120 and Account Number 4935 26114. Bang the yellow copy receipts into the post addressed to Jill Willoughby of WA Police Legacy PO Box 87 Victoria Park 6979. Remember to include the bank deposit receipt too and send in the receipt book once you’ve collected all your pledges or finished shaking your mates down. Remember, half the money you raise is to benefit WA Police Legacy, the other half may go to a registered charity of your team’s choice. Money collected for the other charity does not have to go through WA Police Legacy; you can send it directly to your nominated charity. Make sure you tell me how much your team raised though so we know how great your efforts were and how much we’ve collectively raised. Grab a bucket load of inspiration from these Uber-Fanatic Fundraisers amongst our dusty peloton;

Rawring Forties $80-90,000 Chicken Treat Trackers & $50,000 Red Rooster Riders The Flying Foams $45,000 Rocky Bay Heart Kids $40,000

In my humble opinion, this is what The Challenge is all about; complete immersion in a charitable event, engaging with the community and raising a truck load of money and immeasurable good will to the freakin’ awesome charities out there assisting those in need. Our collective total is set to be staggering; in excess of $600,000. SHUT UP. Congratulations to everyone for your incredible efforts and fund raising endeavours. See? It’s not all about the bike.

Uncle Travelling Matt I witnessed first hand The Great Journey. Wheeled Silly Creatures converged from every corner of Outer Space and travelled The Corrugated Superhighway to the Promised Land - a fresh water country of such beauty that it would cause a Dozer to whistle a jaunty tune. The Silly Creatures were not all the same. They appeared to be all sorts of Silly Creatures, mixed together from all across Outer Space; happy to ride their wheeled contraptions from one side of the wild frontier to the last frontier. Some had strange talking voices, some were very fast and some were not so fast. In the evenings they would gather in great numbers and wait patiently for other Silly Creatures to serve them a great feast that materialised right out of nowhere, as if by magic. The Silly Creatures harness a powerful force they call; Volunteers. Mystical Beings with special powers. Late each evening the Silly Creatures drew further nourishment from a wonderful fizzy beverage that was served very cold. I shared several of these refreshing ales but it made me sing songs with bawdy lyrics out aloud and laugh all night. The Silly Creatures I shared these festivities seemed unaffected by the Dozer Construction Crew that took up residence in my head the following morning. They just launched themselves upon their crusted wheeled contraptions and pedalled away at a furious pace. R May Zing…..or was that Red Dirt Riders….or Crackalakin…?

(B)Rumour Mill Nordic team entries, on-line registration, morning broadcasts with Aunty, mobile ablution blocks, registration ballots……take your pick; they’re all pure speculation at the moment. What I can promise you is that whatever guise the 2011 Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge takes on next year, we’re in for another incredible adventure.

The next few months will be critical in terms of sponsorship, catering arrangements and team compositions but they provide an insight to the development of our event. This is exciting stuff guys and girls and you’re invited to contribute as well. Your valuable thoughts and suggestions can help build a better event. Tell me what you liked, what you’d like to see improved………don’t pull the punches or shower with false accolades…..but talk up any nominations to go before the Nobel Committee. Surveys will go out through your team captains so please take a moment to share your thoughts.

Paparazzi It’s fair to say our dusty peloton caught more than the occasional curious stare from the other travelers on The Gibb. I suspect there were quite a few amongst us that were fairly handy with a camera and managed to capture some great shots too.

I would dearly love a copy of your photos/video files. If you would like to contribute to a compilation DVD set to a musical score that celebrates your incredible Kimberley moment, send them to me at the Kimberley District Office PO Box 82 Broome WA 6725. Show me yours, I’ll show you mine. Really, give me a CD and you’ll receive a free compilation DVD.

Bloody Heroic Battles I am privileged, honoured and thrilled to have met so many wonderful people through the stewardship of this event. Every day brings a pleasant tingle of pride to know that we’re making some real differences to the lives of others. If we’re really honest, creating some pretty special moments for ourselves too. Noble causes to be sure. Selfless acts of brutal physical endeavour, absolutely. But come on……we’re doing it the most beautiful place in the World and that’s kinda cool. Our dusty peloton holds some incredible examples of the human spirit and I want to share a couple with you now. It’s a privilege not fully extended because their stories are personal and if you know them well enough, you’ll know their story already. If not, share a trail or a moment at camp next year and draw your own inspiration from their incredible humility. Paul registered himself and his son-in-law for two successive Challenges. Each year, gritty determination was set to challenge the dire medical prognosis. Despite early confidences, the remissions would stall before the onslaught of an aggressive tumour and Paul would ride alone. This year I received just the one registration; his son-in-law had finally lost his brave battle with cancer. Bloody heroic spirit. David and I met before The Challenge, in another charitable bike event supporting WA Police Legacy no less. He came over to the dark side and shed the skinny tyres in favour for the fat ones, throwing down some impressive turns on the corrugated super highway in his first year. David couldn’t join us last year though as he waged his own mortal combat with cancer. I was thrilled to see him in that breaking dawn in Derby this year as he rejoined our dusty peloton. Good one mate – one all. Brad’s a likeable lad. Young, fit, strong, fresh faced, super enthused about his new job and has a Mum that couldn’t be prouder. He’s a good looking guy too and I’m sure his Mum has a tough job working through the dating resumes. Brad will be joining our dusty peloton in the years’ to come I’m sure, once he kicks the arse of his recent nemesis; cancer. Read Lance’s “It’s not all about the bike.” Read it again…..and then again. That Seppo is a cancer surviving superstar and so are you. Kaye is locked in her own battle, right now. Just days after this year’s Challenge, she delivered the devastating news to a heartbroken son that she too had been drafted into this terrible war. Kind spirit. Beautiful person. Loved parent. It doesn’t seem to matter, cancer selects it’s foes with breathtaking indifference. Cancer’s got a real fight on its hands this time though because I don’t know of anyone stronger, or more determined, or more loving of life than Kaye. Our thoughts are with you. Fight the good fight and share a long life time of treasured Kodak moments at Barred Creek.

What Now…………………? It’s fair to say the preparations for next year’s Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge have already commenced. (It never really stops) The newsletters will cease for the next few months but the work will continue in the background at a furious pace; acquittals, debriefing, asset recovery and next year’s grant submissions. We’ll start with a fresh slate as far as our Heroes Page goes but we’ll certainly be trying to secure our valued corporate sponsors again for what has proven to be an immensely popular and unique event. There will be a little of the; get your people to call my people and we can do lunch. A chance for some schmoozing and discovering that corporate Jezebel inside me. I want to again offer a heart felt thanks to the participants in this year’s event; sponsors, emergency service partners, riders, support personnel, ABC crew and bloody heroic volunteers. We’re in for another explosion of interest from teams keen to join us next year and that would be cool; building our event towards an epic Kimberley adventure that’s attracting international interest. The secret’s out! The first available team places for 2011 will go to those teams with a demonstrated blood lust for fund-raising. Additional places will be allocated by ballot or some other approved electoral process employed by despotic South Pacific military regimes…or the Federal Labor Party So, firm up a team, approach potential sponsors, get in some regular training or tinker with the trailer and match the logistical preparations if not the superhuman speed and endurance of the freaks. Stay tuned for Registration details in the first of the 2011 campaign newsletters Gravel

Rush due out in October, or maybe even September if I’m feeling particularly gobby. “In the mean time it’s good night from me……… And it’s good night from him.”
