Sailing

Read about sailing an Olympic course and answer the questions that follow.

Olympic Course• An Olympic yacht course is the race layout most

frequently used in regattas for yachts of all classes. The distance between the buoys varies according to the class. The length of the course depends on the class and number of yachts, the stretch of water, and the weather conditions. Buoys mark the course. Races last between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours.

Sailing Techniques

• Sailing requires the mastery of techniques such as tacking, jibing, and sail use such as using a spinnaker.

• Tacking is moving in a zig-zag way and switching the sails from one side of the boat to the other, when the wind is coming from in front of the boat.

• Jibing is when the wind is coming from the back of the boat. Jibing requires good skills; the sail swings about 160° from one side of the boat to the other.

• A spinnaker is a large sail, set at the front of the boat, that can increase boat speed if a strong wind is behind you.

(Write down some words from the poem which show this.)

The world Cup Final

It was Us versus Them, final of the World Cup which never was.

Us: Wright, Rutherford, Crowe, Jones, and Smith. Them: Who cares?

We were soon on top, though an opening stand of ten came to a end when Wright was given out for running off with a friend. Rutherford was next to go, Got homework, gotta split.Crowe hit two scintillating fours before departing to buy an ice cream from the corner store. Jones didn't even get to bat, he'd taken the bus home so that was that. Smith attacked the bowler by chasing him with the roller. They all claimed this wasn't cricket and went home taking the wicket. We won. Gary Langford
