Early Life On the 5th of February, 1827, Peter Lalor was born

in Ireland. Peter Lalor was tall, strong, neat and respectful, he was well educated at a college called Carlow College and transferred to Trinity College.

Peter Lalor later became a politician and had a long political career. Then one day a miner was

murdered, Lalor led this stockade and they won. Unfortunately, Peter Lalor died in 1889 but always

will be remembered.

LIFE ON THE GOLDFIELDS

LIfe on the Australian Goldfields was very difficult and strict. Many people had come from other countries to Australia to find gold in the goldfields of Ballarat. The

first governor was strict and had many rules. Miners had to show their licenses at any time and if they couldn’t, they were beaten and arrested. The licenses were very

very expensive and many miners didn’t find enough gold to pay for them.

What Happened To Start the Stockade?

A miner was killed by a man called Bentley who was let off because he was friends with

the magistrate. The miners were really furious about this. So, Lalor and the miners fought against the government. They wanted Bentley to be sentenced and put in jail but he

was allowed to go free. .

OTHER REASONS THE STOCKADE BEGAN

Peter Lalor started the eureka stockade because he wanted to be treated fairly . The licenses were too expensive and also wanted

the right to vote. he believed it would be fairer if there were people in parliament

also on the side of miners .

WHAT DIFFICULTIES DID HE HAVEPeter Lalor had a tough life, he had to fight for he and the

miners wanted. Lalor also had to experience his friend James Scobie being murdered. Lalor also lost an arm in battle against the magistrate and soldiers. Thanks to his

friends, he escaped with one arm on a truck and the diggers were arrested and beaten. Troopers also unfairly attacked and killed innocent bystanders. So Lalor and

the miners tried to overthrow the government but 13 miners were charged and arrested. The government was

incensed.

The Main PeopleThe main people involved in the eureka stockade were the

two English governors of Victoria . The first was Charles Joseph La Trobe, he was governor for 15 years, he was well educated and hated violence . La Trobe couldn’t control the rough miners. Diggers hated La Trobe because he brought

the licenses. They were unpopular because the licenses were too expensive and often miners didn’t find enough

gold to pay for them. La Trobe had peace until Sir Charles Hotham took over. Sir Charles Hotham was a money

manager and was a hard working governor. He was clever, strict and stubborn. In 1854 Hotham wanted to join the

Crimean War , but he was rejected. It was during Hotham’s time that the stockade occurred .9
